With hindsight being 20/20 and all, it may be a shock to learn that when Jane Fonda and producing partner Bruce Gilbert wanted to make a workplace comedy about three secretaries who decide to enact revenge on their tyrannical, chauvinist boss called "9 to 5," few people (see: men) in positions of power thought the film would be a success. And yet, the film -- which got its name after a grassroots organization of women fighting for workplace equality and fair pay (that is still around today) -- was a box-office smash, launched the mainstream career of Dolly Parton outside of music, and inspired both a TV adaptation and a Broadway musical.
Featuring interviews with Parton, Fonda, Lily Tomlin, countless others who worked on the film, the TV adaptation (Rita Moreno!), the Broadway musical (Allison Janney!), and activists from then and now, the documentary "Still Working 9 to 5" currently boasts a 93% critical score.

Jane Fonda has taken to social media to remember her longtime “bestie” Paula Weinstein, who died on March 25 at 78 years old, as well as share how people can honor her late friend.
“I’Ve Lost My Bestie, Paula Weinstein. Paula was everything a friend should be — to me and to so many people. I’ve been sitting Shivah in her NY apartment with so many people who also think of her as their best friend and I’m feeling jealous, to be honest,” the Oscar-winning actress wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram on Thursday. “Paula could make all of us laugh harder than anyone else could. She was always good for a real belly laugh.”
Weinstein was a longtime Tribeca executive and producer who worked on dozens of projects throughout her career, including The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Perfect Storm, Analyze This and Grace and Frankie.

A new study indicates that the tenets that contributed to “Barbie’s” $1.4 billion box office success and pop culture dominance — namely featuring a female-led ensemble — was the exception rather than the rule in Hollywood this year. Outside of Barbieland and a handful of other movies that were fronted by female characters, there was decreasing opportunity for women in film in 2023.
The latest “It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World” report from Dr. Martha Lauzen, executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, found that in 2023, only 18% of the 100 top-grossing films featured more female than male characters and 5% of films had equal numbers of female and male characters. This meant that a whopping 77% of movies had more male than female characters in speaking roles.

Joe Biden didn’t score an endorsement from Taylor Swift on Super Bowl Sunday, as some had predicted. But her boyfriend Travis Kelce is using the president’s renewable energy tax credits to finance the film “My Dead Friend Zoe.”
The SXSW-bound indie, which stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman, marks Kelce’s first foray into movies, with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end serving as an executive producer. The investors in the low-budget dark comedy, which include Kelce, are the first to take advantage of 2022’s Inflation Reduction Act to finance a film. (“My Dead Friend Zoe” cost less than $10 million.)

Not to sound like a broken record, but it was, once again, a pretty quiet weekend at the box office. Director Matthew Vaughn's "Argylle" topped the charts with a modest $18 million (which was sadly below industry projections) and, quite frankly, that isn't going to be enough to keep theaters afloat until the slate improves in March. But amid the unfortunate slowness of the weekend, a savior emerged in the form of Jesus. Yes, that very same Jesus. And it's not the first time he's come to the rescue in recent months.
The Chosen Inc. released the first three episodes of "The Chosen" season 4 in theaters over the weekend in partnership with Fathom Events. It paid off: The target audience indeed showed up for the cinematic, episodic look at the life of Jesus Christ, with the release pulling in just shy of $6 million over the weekend. “We’re not what we were.” “There is no good death.” “You want to see what’s going to happen to the ones you love.” Writer/director Josh Margolin squeezes surprisingly funny freshness from the musty themes of aging, death, and lost autonomy in his poignantly written “Thelma,” a seriocomic “Mission Impossible” remix that casts June Squibb as the titular action hero in a slow-moving but still quietly epic revenge flick about elder fraud.

Chicago – The seemingly middle-of-the-road character actor Bob Balaban has more to his legacy than just a ton of appearances from the 1960s to present in classic films and TV. His Chicago family were pioneers in film exhibition and the movie executive suite during the studio system in the early days of the history of film. It is in his DNA.
The amazing story of Chicago’s Balaban family began soon after they emigrated from Russia. His uncles formed a coalition with Sam Katz to build theaters. The Balaban & Katz brand meant the highest quality movie palaces eventually, the ultimate in the early 20th Century movie experience before television … two prominent theaters still standing are the city-symbolic Chicago Theatre and the still-closed-but-still-standing Uptown Theatre. Bob was born in Chicago, and his father built his favorite theatre icon (as told in the Podtalk below). For the final flourish, his uncle Barney Balaban...

It's New Year's Eve, which means it's time for another one of the YouTuber Sleepy Skunk's Movie Trailer Mash-Ups. Since 2010, Sleepy Skunk has been delivering 6-and-a-half-minute remixes of nearly every trailer of a major movie to come out that year, and 2023 is no exception.
Once again, this year's trailer is divided into sections, each with a different tone to better capture the sheer variety of movies it has to work with. The first is fairly quiet and peaceful, reminding us of all those romantic, understated films like "Past Lives" or "Elemental." Then comes the spooky section, which reminds us of gems like "Skinamarink" and "The Boogeyman." The mash-up sensibly uses "M3GAN" to end its main horror section, as the evil robot doll's dance transitions perfectly to the trailer's comedy section. Then comes all the goofy, crass, and absurdly funny trailer moments we'd nearly forgotten.

Ninety-four songs and 149 scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th annual Academy Awards, Variety has learned.
Voting began Thursday, with 390 members of the Academy music branch eligible to vote in this year’s competition. And for the first time in years, there appear to be no surprises or glaring omissions.
Any film can submit up to three songs, and the “Barbie” entries were as expected: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made for,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and the Mark Ronson-Andrew Wyatt song “I’m Just Ken.”
Five other films submitted the maximum of three songs, including two from Disney: the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt” and “Wild Uncharted Waters,” all by Alan Menken (who won Oscars for the original in 1989) and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and “Wish,” the Julia Michaels-Benjamin Rice tunes including “I’m a Star,...

Diane Warren lined up an all-star girl group including Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper and Gloria Estefan to sing “Gonna Be You,” from the film 80 for Brady.
“I love great artists,” Warren said Thursday at Deadline’s Sound and Screen Film event. “I love iconic artists.”
Warren had written songs for Estefan and Carlisle before. Parton was a first.
“She doesn’t need me,” Warren said of the country legend.
Producer Damon Elliott coordinated recording all of the artists in different locations. Carlisle was in Mexico City and Estefan in Miami, for example.
“None of them are in L.A.,” Warren said.
During her long music career, Warren has written for such varied artists as Trisha Yearwood, Aerosmith and Starship. Warren said she still gets turned down, but her persistence often pays off with big hits.

Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of football. (He racked up his seventh Super Bowl win in 2021.) He rose to definitive heartthrob status over the course of his career, even inspiring a group of elderly women to travel to the Super Bowl in hopes of seeing him - a story chronicled in the movie "80 For Brady."
Over the years, Brady has frequently made headlines for his relationships, particularly his marriage to model Gisele Bündchen. The pair were together from 2009 to October 2022 before they finalized their divorce. They share two children, Benjamin and Vivian, and Brady also has a son named Jack with his ex Bridget Moynahan. In the wake of his divorce, Brady's been focusing on his kids. Hollywood production and distribution company Fifth Season laid off 12 percent of its staff, or 30 positions, Thursday due to the impact of the writers and actors strikes.
The company, previously known as Endeavor Content, itself was formed after a packaging fees fight between Endeavor and the Writers Guild of America, in which the talent agency was required to divest a majority stake in the business in order to be able to represent writers. It had been doing business as Endeavor Content since 2017.
Fifth Season is now majority-controlled by South Korean entertainment company Cj Enm, with Endeavor retaining a minority stake. The studio has been responsible for shows such as Apple TV+’s Severance, AMC’s Killing Eve and the film 80 for Brady.
Eight people of the 220 person workforce were laid off from the company in late April, ahead of both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The positions eliminated Thursday included executive and administrative roles.
The company, previously known as Endeavor Content, itself was formed after a packaging fees fight between Endeavor and the Writers Guild of America, in which the talent agency was required to divest a majority stake in the business in order to be able to represent writers. It had been doing business as Endeavor Content since 2017.

Fifth Season, the production company behind “Severance” and “80 for Brady,” has been hit with another round of layoffs due to the historic Hollywood double strike.
The cost-cutting measures impacted 30 executive and administrative roles, totaling 12% of the company. Thursday’s layoffs follow a previous round of cuts in April that decreased 2% of its staff, including eight executives.
“Today we made the difficult decision to reduce Fifth Season’s headcount due to the impact on our business operations as a result of the ongoing dispute between the AMPTP and WGA & SAG-AFTRA,” a spokesperson for Fifth Season said in a statement. “This resulted in the loss of 30 positions across executive and administrative roles, approximately 12% of our workforce. Our team is extraordinary and the reduction of staff by even one individual, let alone many, is heartbreaking”

Billy Porter, who was slated to star as James Baldwin in an upcoming biopic, said he had to sell his home amid the ongoing writers and actors strikes.
In an interview published on Friday by the Evening Standard, the “Pose” star and longtime theater giant shared his thoughts on the Hollywood strikes, which have put a holdup on TV shows and films and have delayed other projects that were set to make their debut.
“I don’t have any words for it, but: f–k you. That’s not useful, so I’ve kept my mouth shut. I haven’t engaged because I’m so enraged,” said Porter, mentioning that he plans to join his union at the picket lines. “If this sounds like, well, a millionaire trying to get more millions, Billy Porter has news for you. ‘I have to sell my house.'”

Matthew Vaughn’s big-budget “Argylle” will get a conventional theatrical release courtesy of Universal. Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble sees the number of Hollywood tentpoles at the multiplex catching up to 2019 levels so domestic box office can potentially surpass pre-pandemic highs.
“We see content recovering to levels consistent with pre-pandemic levels, if not a touch higher as we look forward. It’s really a question of how long it takes that trajectory to get there,” Gamble told the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference during a session that was webcast.
The Cinemark boss said a greater number of theatrical releases has fed greater interest by consumers to return to cinemas going into the usual late summer dip in Hollywood box office.
That box office recovery extends beyond the usual tentpoles like Avatar: The Way of Water and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania helping fill seats and sell popcorn at the multiplex to low- and mid-budget adult dramas like 80 For Brady and A Man Called Otto,...

Jane Fonda had quite the late-night escapade.
The 85-year-old Hollywood icon recently revealed to host Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” that she shared a skinny dipping encounter with the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson.
The “80 for Brady” actress dropped the story while playing Cohen’s, 54, notorious Plead the Fifth game, where stars are proposed with three juicy questions, with the option to opt out of one question by pleading the fifth. However, the actress wasn’t afraid to share her experience with the “Thriller” singer.

It looks like the buzz about superhero fatigue, or at least Marvel fatigue, was somewhat overblown, with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 posting a muscular $60.5 million weekend (significantly higher than what I predicted earlier this week). That’s only a 49% second-weekend decline, which, according to Deadline, beats the 55% decline the first two movies saw. In the end, it likely won’t gross as much as either of the other two movies domestically, thanks to a somewhat soft opening and a different marketplace, but the hold is terrific. By comparison, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania had a disastrous 70% drop in week two, and even the beloved Spider-Man: No Way Home had a 68% drop. Fans seem to love what’s being called the series’s final instalment, although certainly, there’s a way forward for some of the characters…

Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″ was victorious again at the domestic box office, adding $60.5 million in its second weekend of release.
Ticket sales dropped by 49% from its debut, marking an impressive hold… at least for a superhero movie. Across more than 30 Marvel entries, only 2018’s “Black Panther” (down 45%) and 2011’s “Thor” (down 47%) have enjoyed stronger second weekend holds. By comparison, recent MCU movies such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” declined by nearly 70% in their sophomore outings. Those were brutal falls, even for movies that debuted to more than $100 million. They also served as reminders that Disney’s premier franchise may remain critic-proof in terms of opening weekends, but they’re no longer immune to quickly falling back down to Earth.

Moms, it’s time to swap the paperback copy of “Normal People” for a movie ticket. “Book Club: The Next Chapter” opens on the big screen this weekend, and the sequel to 2018’s sleeper-hit septuagenarian comedy is expected to earn $7 million to $10 million from 3,507 North American theaters in its debut.
Focus Features is hoping the film, which reunites the core group of readers in Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, will bring out the same crowd of older females that powered the first “Book Club” to $68 million domestically and $104 million globally. The original, which was released by Paramount, debuted to $13.5 million.
The $20 million-budgeted sequel faces a tougher theatrical landscape than the first, with older audiences more reluctant to go to the movies because of the pandemic. But given the built-in awareness that benefits second films in a franchise, it’s surprising that “Book Club 2” is tracking below Paramount’s “80 for Brady,...

Focus Features has the right idea in releasing the new sequel, Book Club: The Next Chapter just in time for Mother’s Day. Reuniting four genuine movie icons – Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen – whose first film in this senior franchise, 2017’s Book Club, was a surprise hit making over $100 million worldwide, there was proof positive that older female audience was eager for a night or matinee out at the multiplex if the idea and cast were right. Since then the pandemic hit and changed moviegoing habits for the older crowd, a group that is hard to get back into theatres (although not impossible – witness The Lost City and Ticket To Paradise). My guess is that with this quartet back in fine form, and now all over 70 (!), this could again play with the usual Hollywood conceit that women of a certain age are not boxoffice. Throw in Italy...

Paramount recognized a giant $1.674 billion programming charge in the first quarter of 2023, due in large part to its plans to merge Showtime with Paramount+. With dwindling revenue (-8 percent) thanks to the struggling ad market, some lackluster timing at Paramount Pictures, and a $511 million streaming investment, the company reported an operating loss of $1.23 billion.
Basically, that massive programming charge is stems from removing content from platforms, abandoning development, and terminating contracts. There were also some international cuts to align those operations with the “Paramount+ with Showtime” push.
In the end, Paramount missed Wall Street’s earnings estimates, even with adjusting for those one-time charges, reporting 9 cents of (adjusted) earnings per share vs. a consensus of 17 cents. Revenue also came in shy of expectations at $7.265 billion against a consensus $7.42 billion.
Pre-market, Paramount Global shares (Para) are trading down double digits. A heavy dividend cut didn’t help.
The news wasn’t all bad.

May kicks off the annual summer movie season where studios will release some of their biggest “tentpole” flicks, with this summer being particularly important for the full recovery of the box office. And yet, oddly, there are only three prospective blockbusters this month with many smaller films padding things out. Read on for Gold Derby’s May 2023 box office preview.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Marvel/Disney) – May 5
James Gunn marks the finale of his MCU trilogy with the group he introduced in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldañha, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper. Joining the finale is Will Poulter as Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji (“Peacemaker”) as The High Evolutionary, two major Marvel Comics cosmic characters, although it feels like this will be a standalone finale, rather than tying into the rest of the MCU.

Paramount is riding incredibly high after their 2022 box office grosses rose past $1 billion for the first time in over a decade and kept its momentum going at CinemaCon with plenty of exciting announcements and sneak peeks.
But before all of that, Chris Aronson showed up to give a little spoonful of tough love.
In his time as head of domestic distribution at 20th Century Fox and now at Paramount, Aronson has been known at CinemaCon both for his humorous entrances at studio presentations and his very candid takes on the movie theater business. This year saw more of both as Aronson emerged from a sewer manhole with some pizza to promote “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” prompting the film’s writer-producer Seth Rogen to joke that it was “quite appropriate” to see a Hollywood exec doing that.
