Boring but somewhat inspirational
dramafreebri24 August 2019
It was a good story, but not one I would want to watch again. It seemed very cheaply produced. Gave background information on 2Pac and The Outlawz along with Yaki Kadafi's death. In the end it showed how Napoleon dealt with the deaths of so many others around him over the years and overcame to find a more fulfilling life, but it seemed like it was filmed on somebody's 1990 Nokia camera phone. At one point I had to put the subtitles on because a guy sounded like he was talking through a tin can under the water.

Insightful and educational
alkendi2 December 2010
One of the most insightful documentary movies I have come across. Even though we have heard stories of famous people not truly happy, many of us thought they're simply myths or rare incidents.

This documentary will give you an insight into the life of one of the most famous people in the music industry in 1990s who many of us were wishing (and still do) to live like them.

This movie contains interviews, pictures and video footage that would educate you in many ways such as how do stars live their lives, did they choose their path or was it chosen for them...etc.

Simply put, it's a movie that would change your life or at least your view of the so-called fame in the music industry.

I would love to see it again.

I have seen this documentary, and I would love to see it again. With Napoleon talking about his life with numerous interviews of others it was something novel and unique. I was left mesmerized listening and watching the 'life of an Outlaw'.

To live with copious friends talking about becoming 'like' those famous celebrities and then see with my own eyes the reality of it all was something very valuable.

I saw this documentary in Sydney Australia World Premiere Screening. Simply put, it is a documentary worth watching, and I hope to watch it again.

Must watch documentary !!

An extremely interesting documentary showing the life changing experiences Mutah overtook. In many of our societies today it is rare to come across such interesting and real life experiences, such as Mutah's , the doc was unique and gave ...us an REAL insight to his ex lifestyle….much of which majority of the people are completely ignorant of. Overall I found that the documentary was inspirational, it also contained some emotional scenes . Additionally it was joyful to see that Mutah's Faith was highlighted throughout the doc as his religion was the reasons for his transformation. I'm glad I took the opportunity to watch it, it was beneficial and very much worth it, It was interesting to see the commentary of the Outlawz and Mutah's family and friends - the fact they spoke about his past and changes was extremely beneficial and meaningful.

It was very educational documentary and should be exposed to those in need of assistance - perhaps it should be shown in schools, colleges , universities and youth clubs, as this could be a means of guidance for one who is searching for true happiness and tranquillity, or even those who wish to become rappers. Additionally I'm certain the documentary would be beneficial to the youth and those affiliated with the streets and that lifestyle…they would definitely enjoy it. I'm glad Mutah's was guided to the right path, He continues to be a role model for the youth and he is an inspiration for many today , I would recommend many of you to watch this doc - 10/10 excellent, influential ,educational, interesting and well documented. Furthermore not only is the documentary influential for the youth but also for the middle aged, elders, Muslim's & non Muslim's and those from all different back rounds. Lastly the scenes in the doc serves as a great reminder for those who wish to pursue a career in music, - a huge reminder and reality check of what the real rap lifestyle consists of , you will not find any documentaries which educate its viewers like this one!! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G Documentary!!!!

"Napoleon: Life of an Outlaw" Is a Modern, Nuanced Depiction of Life Before and After Rap Music
seoprrocket11 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This documentary film paints a complex representation of life for someone of Mutah's upbringing. From losing his parents to a senseless murder for hire, being raised by his grandmother, and venturing out into the music business at a very young and crucial age. Manifesting all the emotions he has with no channel to express except in his notebook, where he scribbles down a few lines of poetry. In time, these scribbles evolve into mature rap lyrics, and music becomes the vehicle through which Mutah begins to question the rules of his world, and the role he desires to play in it. Years after converted to Islam, American Rapper Mutah "Napoleon" Beale a Former member of Tupac "2Pac" Shakur's Outlawz explains why he decided to take this amazing step that changed his life around.

In this documentary, he explains that Islam has brought a lot of meaning to his life. He went on to say that he was not built for stardom, clarifying that the life of a rap star made him miserable. Stated that he tried very hard to have fun partying in the music industry, but, he was not built for that. He believed in the dream of becoming a star, but it was just an illusion. The turning point of his life was when he started losing loved ones starting when Pac died followed by his GrandMother, then group member Khadafi, and his brother Selek. It was a chance encounter with a muslim brother, after a fight with his little brother that set everything in motion for him. Mutah was invited to visit a masjid ( mosque), and later took on interest in reading the The Holy Quran. Under the careful direction of Jonathan Abdilla Napoleon: Life of an Outlaw delivers an incredibly nuanced, authentic, and moving portrayal of struggle of Mutah and his upbringing.

What makes Napoleon: Life of an Outlaw an exceptional story is that it transcends the very thing it is trying to depict. Yes, it shows us the harsh realities of Mutah "Napoleon" Beale's life story; yes, it boldly depicts the seemingly insurmountable life of Mutah "Napoleon" Beale. However, at the heart of the documentary is a universal story about struggles, carried with both levity and gravitas by a young man who chooses to chase his dream in spite of all odds. As a fan of 2pac and The Outlawz, I will definitely recommend this documentary to other fans. This documentary gives you a different perspective and first hand looking into Mutah "Napoleon" Beale's life story.

Just a man who came from the darkness to light, and this shows the different passages in life he has had. I must say one of the most influential people I have ever seen (influence who had positive effects on me). Be a good human and do good, and goodness will come to you!

A tragic and facinating documentary!
Anmer9331 July 2019
A tragic and facinating documentary about a legendary icon in rap. If you're a fan of the music genre you'll obviously love it but there is so much more humanity to the story, about overcoming terrible events and chasing your goals. Very powerful piece.
