The last two performances by Kaitlyn Dever I've seen were in "Unbelievable" (about a teenager's rape that almost nobody seems to believe) and "Dopesick" (about a tragic opioid-fueled death), so my guess is that Miss Dever wanted to lighten things up with a fun, goofy comedy. It turns out, she's good at that too! This movie is loosely (and I do mean loosely) based on Will Shakespeare's iconic tale of the star-crossed lovers, with Dever playing Romeo's ex-girlfriend, Rosaline, whom he totally forgets about when Isabela Merced's Juliet enters the picture. With some equally fun support from Bradley Whitford, as Rosaline's dad, and Minnie Driver as her quick witted nurse, Janet, this movie moves along its predictable path with a fair amount of good humor. I am giving this an extra star because Kaitlin Dever has been (rightly) touted as a future superstar since 2013, and her relatively low-key success continues nine years later. Even in trivial films.

It was different from that what I've seen in the last few months, first I didn't know what I can expect from a movie like this. With the short playing time of 90 minutes, I didn't expect that much story and it was the exact amount of story for the time. No useless stretched story and a clear endpoint. Overall was the story something else, it was modern and fresh but the choice of music was a little bit too modern in my opinion. Another point of my criticism is that acting. I love Kaitlyn Dever and enjoyed her performance in Dopesick. In that movie, she wasn't bad but for me, she felt a little bit misplaced in the role. It didn't fit that well in my opinion. But overall a solid movie you can watch if you need something refreshing.

A lite affair which is loaded with sheer cuteness. The leads are adequate as actors. It's a nice twist on a old tale. The use of modern day colloquial dialog is a nice touch. Nice pacing. Flows really well. Story doesn't drag for a minute. Not a theater release worthy, so having this go straight to HULU is actually the best place to play this film. A nice premise which is managed as well as it could. Turn off your brain and enjoy. Plus Shooter McGavin is in this film. How could you possibly go wrong? 😆 😆 😆 😆.

The character of Rosaline is actually not an invention of the filmmakers. As in the play, she is Juliet's cousin and Romeo's prior love and in hope of meeting Rosaline, Romeo is going to the masquerade ball, where he meets Juliet. The main actors are quite likable, the idea is principally pretty good with telling the "real" story, mixing it up a bit with "The Taming of the Shrew" and a bit of flair of Shakespeare in Love. Despite the historical looking outfit and the nice locations - seems to have been shot in and around San Gimigiano - it feels like a highschool romance comedy. The script execution is not quite that well done and many jokes fall just flat. I would have liked it better, if a lot of the silly jokes would have been just removed from the script and more effort had been put into the verbal sparring between Rosaline and her counterpart.

The movie was funny and somehow cute, but unfortunately the scenario was so flat and predictable, the writers should have make it a bit complicated and add some twists instead of inserting some bad jokes to the boring scenes. There are not much to watch really, but the budget of the movie seems high; the decoration and furniture along with the other stuff like customs looked not cheap,some scenes were like a piece of art. The conservative clothing was suitable for children viewing, but the kisses were too many.
The main character was cute and pretty in this movie, her performance was very good and likable. But the story itself needs some improvements.

Rosaline was a modern and refreshing take on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" with overall great acting, good directing, stunning costumes, and beautiful sets and locations. Kaitlyn Dever delivered such a compelling and amusing performance as Rosaline, I would love to watch a more serious and mature version of this film with her as the main character. Even though the screenplay was extremely modern-day in tone, it was also both astoundingly satirical and witty. If this movie was made in the 2000's, it certainly would have been a big hit. I am quite sure teens and young adults (intended target audience) will still enjoy their time watching it.

The last act is actually quite funny and then it's dumb and then it's funny. It alternates back and forth. It's fun.

For loyalists of the original Shakespeare drama, this is pure blasphemous fun. And, if you are a fan of Anna Kendrick's early snarky work, Rosaline will win you over early and keep you watching. This modern re-telling of Romeo and Juliet doesn't waste time trying to speak in the vernacular of Shakespeare, which is a relief. Instead, it focuses on a classic theme: the guilded caged princess who must marry against her wishes. But this caged bird is snarky-- and yet, she must grow as a person (and character) to overcome some of her jaded disposition in order to find her one true love. This movie isn't a classic and won't win any awards, but it is totally watchable and has a satisfying conclusion.

I had hoped people would be more lenient with their scoring for this movie on imdb, but since I think its overall score has short-changed the quality of the film, I give it a 10 to try and coax that average back up again because it is a far better film than people are giving it credit for.

A very funny modern take on Romeo + Juliet (100%, whatever, "Make this City Great Again", Steve the courier, Love is all you need, "You're a p(h)ony!" and many more lovely anachronisms) with a relatively diverse cast (Isabela Merced, Spencer Stevenson, Nico Higara - Was she pleased? -, Henry Hunter Hall) but mostly relegated to supporting roles.
The mid-credit scene is smart and vegan friendly ("I like veal" - "Baby cows?" - "Is it?").
The direction is classic in a plus way, setting the audience in good "oldish" period movies from the 1990s.

It's an intriguing concept that falls flat in execution from the first scene. Did they really think that a young audience wouldn't enjoy this if the dialogue wasn't peppered with "Ew" and "Whatever?"
While one might hope for some inventive wit (see "Shakespeare in Love"), it's mostly just flat and snarky. Despite the lovely period costumes, this might as well be set in a San Fernando Valley high school.
While Kaitlyn Dever is a talented actress, she comes off as a perpetually grumpy drip here, and she's hardly the kind of protagonist that the audience can root for.
There's not much comic or romantic energy to carry the story along, which is a shame. It's an opportunity missed.

I have been dying for the Rom Coms the make a comeback, and after seeing Rosaline, I REALLY hope that is the case!! This movie was cute, funny, sweet, and such an easy carefree watch. Was it thought provoking? No, but that's not what this movie is supposed to be. If Hulu decides to take on more movies like this one, I think it could really be great for their revenue stream because it really was the perfect Sunday watch. Not to mention, all of the actors were great (including the incredible Minnie Driver and charming Bradley Whitford). I think this will quickly become one of my comfort watches.

Overall quality and organization can be quite amateur-ish, but it is freaking cute. Rom-coms are a very tough genre to get approval from critics because many accidental things have to happen to complete a couple falling in love in two hours. Rosaline's love story is inadequate, and I wish there was more Rosaline & Dario than Romeo & Juliet. However, the classic plot added with delightful and quirky imagination and cute acting are very watchable.
* I have a little bit of a problem with movies and shows with these modern and feminist protagonists in historical periods. They shout 'freedom', 'rights', and 'career' with their mouths. However, I do not see any action followed. Feminism became a mere tool to justify the limited scope of a female protagonist, to follow the trend of political correctness, or to boast pretentiously that 'we are of right and modern mind'.

Someone with a bad sense of humour, a really loose grip on Shakespeare and a big bag of money gave it a good crack and failed miserably.
Corny humour, slow obvious story, wasted acting talent and Americanized mall movie dialogue. It's some sort of sugary trash - like a Big Mac or a super sized Cola - that tastes good but at the same time you know is making the world a worse place.
If we had less focus on quantity and more on quality then this travesty would never have been made.
Someone obviously likes this but I would strongly recommend Catherine, Called Birdy as a much better movie (and based on an original idea).

The premise of this film is that Romeo dumps Rosaline for Juliet. The original play tells us that Rosaline didn't even love Romeo in the first place. He wanted her, but she rejected him and took a vow of chastity in stead. The writers have completely changed the story of the source material. A retelling is when a story is told either again or differently. But it should still be the same story (i.e. Same story told through the pov of a different character than the main one(s)). This is not the same story. They'd be better off calling it a reimagining. Give the characters different names and costumes and give the film a different title and completely different setting/circumstances and it would be the same film.
Didn't watch it on that basis alone. It makes no sense. Sounds like, at best, alternate universe fanfiction.

Rosaline is probably the best classic modernization that I've ever seen. Of course that the movie does have its issues, but it is generally very enjoyable. The movie is absurd, but it's aware of it and it doesn't take itself serious, which is what I personally loved the most about it. Kaitlyn Dever played her character in such a funny way while making fun of the situation but also respecting the original story.
I would say this is a cool Sunday afternoon movie. Like, one of those movies you watch when you don't really know what to watch, but feel like having a laugh and cringing a bit.

I saw the YouTube trailer, and was interested. But literally all the interesting part was in the trailer. I kept waiting for more but nothing really happened. The only thing that kept me watching till the end was visual. And the premise, and the concept. It was interesting to shed light on Rosaline, but literally they didn't say anything significant. Like she was a bit jealous, but she got over it and fall in love with another guy? It was promising in the beginning, but the character development fall flat. After Juliette came in to the picture - the story was about Romeo and Juliet, which is complete opposite of what I was expecting. At the end it wanted to cover up the story with the comical, but that fall flat as well. The visual were good til the end, but bad use of the medium.

I really loved watching Kaitlyn's dry and physical comedy. She was so watchable and so many hilarious expressions and gestures that weren't in the script, I just enjoyed seeing how she was going to interpret each scene! And Sean (Dario) was great too, enough humility mixed into the confidence that made him likeable and his feelings believable. I really enjoyed watching this silly interpretation of the timeless earnestness of teenage love. Shakespeare's R&J was also a comedy up until people started dying, I like how this film took the comedic and relatable aspects of the story through someone that wasn't so blindly swept up in the drama. Everything I look for in a romantic comedy!

Well, the synopsis for the 2022 romantic comedy "Rosaline" sounded interesting enough, and I figured there would be basis for a good wholesome romantic comedy here, thus I sat down to watch the movie.
However, writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber managed to swing hard and miss wide. This movie utterly failed to entertain me, and I gradually lost interest in the narrative and the characters as the movie progressed without offering me any entertainment. I managed to endure a staggering 37 minutes of the ordeal known as "Rosaline" before I just simply gave up out of sheer and utter boredom.
The acting performances in "Rosaline" were adequate enough, I suppose. However, I can't say that the actors and actresses had much of anything worthwhile to work with in terms of script, storyline, characters or dialogue.
For a romantic comedy, "Rosaline" was frightfully devoid of anything even remotely funny. And I think this is where director Karen Maine botched the movie and failed to entertain me, much less capture and hold my interest in the narrative.
I am not returning to watch the rest of "Rosaline", because there simply just wasn't anything worthwhile happening in the 37 minutes that I suffered through.
My rating of "Rosaline" lands on a generous two out of ten stars.

A Delightful Update to Romeo and Juliet

Every kid who has to read Romeo and Juliet will enjoy this. It has everything a teenage girl needs...a spunky heroine, a very (very!) cute leading man and a Taylor Swift song over the closing credits.
Romeo bears a bit of a resemblence to the late Heath Ledger. The wonderful Bradley Whitford and Minnie Driver shine in small but pivotal roles and while the plot is predictable, there are enough small twists and turns to make it fun.
As a standalone for younger kids, it will be fine. If you introduce them to the actual story of Romeo and Juliet first, they will get more out of it. One well-deserved profanity and very little violence.

I imagine there must be a place in hell where some lost souls are damned to watch movies like Rosaline for all eternity (you have to choose one movie and that's it, you gotta stick to it, let's say for the next couple of millenniums, 24/7 of course). The production is okay, the actors do solid, but the whole movie is boring, got no wit, the genre of comedy is tortured to death by a weak script and most predictable "humor". The initial idea of Rosaline is interesting but that's more or less about it - the rest is simply, I wouldn't say bad (the actors save the bad script to a certain degree), but rather a mind-numbing bore. Maybe there is some audience who likes a movie like this but I don't belong to those. Hopefully the master of the pits of hell does not read this review, so I'm not condemned to watch this one for all eternity someday ;)

While some people may hate this movie because it's not like the classic Shakespeare play, Romeo & Juliet, I personally loved it. Part of the reason I loved it is because I remember feeling bad for Rosaline when I read Romeo & Juliet. One minute Romeo was in love with her, the next he loved Juliet. Rosaline really did get the raw end of the deal. It wasn't her fault she fell in love with a fickle man-child. And honestly, who hasn't been a Rosaline at some point in their life?
One really poignant moment for me in this movie was when Dario pointedly said, "he cheated on you". You could see Rosaline hesitate as this sunk in and I've never thought of it that way but it's basically what happened. I, for one, am glad the writer(s) had the sense to point it out.
Some reviews complained about how Romeo was portrayed as a fool or an idiot. I mean really, he's supposed to be a teenage boy, what teenage boy isn't an idiot at some point? This movie did a great job of exploring the fact that teenagers aren't the most rational creatures on the planet. They fall head over heels quickly and just as quickly realize it may not work. I loved that end scene between Romeo & Juliet on the boat. As I got older, I understood their relationship probably wouldn't last because all Romeo had was pretty words and grand gestures and sooner or later, that wouldn't be enough.
This movie highlights the idea that a passionate love isn't always a lasting one and to truly fall in love with someone, you have to get to know them. If you're a big fan of the play Romeo & Juliet and don't want to see you favorite characters "sullied", I would skip this movie. However, if you're like me and identified with Rosaline in some way or felt bad for her, I recommend this movie so you can see her get her happy ending.

I gave my rating a 10 because I loved every bit of this movie. Sure it is not a masterpiece compared to Oscar winners yet it is one of the cleverest renditions of Shakespeare I've seen! This movie is fun and heartwarming, like a wicked version of Romeo and Juliet. The cast is brilliant to bring the story to life. The lead is witty and a full out fantastic choice and absolutely love Dario. He was the best choice for his role. This story gives me Taming of the Shrew vibes in the best way possible! Highly recommend this if you love a modern Shakespearean comedy and love story. Or if you love period pieces, either way I'd say it is fun for the entire family. Disney+ has done it again, can't wait for the enchanted sequel! Watch this movie and give it the rating it deserves!
Credit for being original, but also no credit for not being true to the original

I give the series credit for being original, but I simply don't understand why the writers couldn't have kept Shakespeare's original storyline where Rosaline dumped Romeo weeks before the Capulet ball. Now those who are ignorant of Shakespeare will stupidly believe this series is true to the original and they will then pass their ignorance onto the likewise ignorant.
Is this series better because Romeo left Rosaline for Juliet? Nope.
I mean, don't fix what isn't broken, I guess? It was a dumb move on the writers' parts.
I'm going to keep watching the series because, aside from the writers departing from the aforementioned original plot line, it is actually quite well-written and the casting is amazing.
