There’s a chance you may have caught Boyd Hicklin’s cricket comedy Knocked for Six at London Film Festival 2012 – where it went by the name of Save Your Legs. However now seems a far more appropriate time to indulge in this quirky piece, as we enter in to the cricket season (otherwise known as the Summer, over ‘ere), with a film that taps into that annual excitement amongst fans of the sport. A sport that, while mostly untouched in cinema, has shown that it can translate well onto the big screen, following on from the brilliant documentary Fire in Babylon.
Teddy Brown (Stephen Curry) lives and breathes cricket, spending the vast majority of his time focusing on being the president of the Abbotsford Anglers, where he plays alongside his two closest friends, Rick (Brendan Cowell) and Stavros (Damon Gameau) amongst others. His biggest dream, however, is to embark on...

An “Australian bromantic cricket comedy” might sound like an odd, unconventional mix, but Save Your Legs does little favours for either the sport of cricket or the country of Australia, tracing along the broadest of lines as director Boyd Hicklin delivers a rote underdog sports tale that suffers a fatal poverty of both wit and heart.
After a fifth-rate Australian cricket team blags their way into being sponsored, they head to India to embark on a sporting tour that will see them facing the toughest teams the nation has to offer, as well some equally taxing personal challenges. The Aussie charm should give this one a novel appeal, but the script, fast-bowling genre clichés and stock characters amid overbearing voice-over narration and low-mileage culture-clash tropes, is diabolical.
Things quickly hit rock-bottom once Hicklin wheels out the toilet humour from which the film never recovers. As a result,...

★☆☆☆☆ The comedy feature debut from Aussie born director Boyd Hicklin, Save Your Legs! (2013) is an odd choice for a festival film, even if it is categorised under 'Laugh' in the new London Film Festival groupings, where it will undoubtedly find few friends on the festival circuit. Edward 'Teddy' Brown (Stephen Curry) is something of a no-hoper. He lives in his best friend's garage and has an unhealthy obsession with cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar (he once snuck into a changing room during a test match and stole the player's protective box).

The third day of press screenings for the 56th London Film Festival provided quite an odd array of choices. Mexico’s Here and There represented the “Journey” strand of the festival, while Save Your Legs! was then meant to provide some much needed laughs (it’s in the “Laugh” category, you see) before “Cult” pick Doomsday Book ended the afternoon on quite a bizarre note. – London Film Fan
Here and There
There’s a reason Antonio Méndez Esparza’s debut feature film isn’t playing as part of the “First Feature” competition at the Lff, it’s atrocious. The “story” of a father (Pedro De los Santos) returning to his family in Mexico to start a band after working in the Us is about as bland and poorly produced as any film could be and still get into the Festival. With excruciatingly static cinematography, stilted performances and cringe-inducing blocking, Here and There...

The Melbourne International Film Festival will close on August 18 with P.J. Hogan.s Mental.
Mental reunites writer-director P.J. Hogan with his original leading lady Toni Collette for the first time since Muriel's Wedding. The film follows the story of the Moochmore family after mother Shirley (Rebecca Gibney), unable to cope with her five teenage daughters and philandering husband, Barry (Anthony Lapaglia), suffers a nervous breakdown. A hitchhiker named Shaz (Collette) then enters the family home as nanny.
.How wonderful that we are able to book-end the 2012 Miff with what will surely be two of the biggest Australian films of the year, in The Sapphires and Mental," Miff artistic director Michelle Carey said. "Featuring an incredible ensemble cast, P.J. Hogan.s new film is as outrageously fun as it is smart and moving."

A new Australian film set in India has cast Aussie actress Toni Collette and Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel.
Defiant is written and directed by Kiss or Kill’s Bill Bennett and produced by Bennett and Anupam Sharma.
The Australian-based Sharma told Encore that the production is aiming to have a global perspective and operate despite the lack of a co-production treaty between Australia and India.
However, this suits Sharma’s plan: “I’ve always propagated that we should use the Australian producer offset, and use private Indian finance.”
“At the end of the day, these stories work because they’ve got something to tell, not a doctored story to make a co-production. You have to find the right team. When I look at the team, I’ve constantly screamed we need a global perspective.”

If anyone should be aware of the power of cricket to reveal the best and worst sides of human nature, it.s Brendan Cowell.
After all, Cowell wrote (and stars in) the upcoming cricket comedy Save Your Legs! (which was recently filming in India) as well as two episodes of Matchbox Pictures. The Slap, a fictional series exploring a traumatic chain of events ignited when an adult slaps a child during a backyard cricket game.
Although Cowell looks upon both writing experiences fondly, they couldn.t be further apart in terms of tone. Save Your Legs! tells the story of Edward Teddy Brown, who starts a cricket team with his two best mates to embark on a tour of India and recapture his childhood dreams. The story is especially relevant to Cowell, a thirtysomething cricket fan.

Fans of the Aussie thriller Wolf Creek have a good reason to get excited today. The flick has found funding, and that means it will be slashing its way to American shores soon!
According to Variety Wolf Creek 2 was one of more than a dozen projects announced by Screen Australia topper Ruth Harley at the Melbourne Intl. Film Festival during the weekend.
Harley said the location of the announcement -- Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria -- was relevant to the new "compelling slate of screen productions."
"Three of the new features hail from Victoria, including director Greg McLean's film 'Wolf Creek 2,' which will once again bring horror, action and suspense to the Outback, as well as the directorial debuts of Boyd Hicklin with the comedy bromance 'Save Your Legs' and David Pulbrook's political drama 'Last Dance,'" Harley said.

Screen Australia CEO Ruth Harley this evening announced production investment of $18million in 13 projects.
Announced at Melbourne International Film Festival’s 37 degree South Market, Harley said ““I’m thrilled to announce a compelling slate of quality screen productions that promise to engage audiences of all ages and tastes.”
The investment will trigger $85million in production over six feature films, five adult tv programs, a children’s series and a documentary series.
Feature films to receive funding include:
Pig-shooter Mick Taylor is back in Wolf Creek 2 terrorising the outback and another unfortunate backpacker.
Australian bro-mantic comedy Save Your Legs, directed by Boyd Hicklin and written by Brendan Cowell, tells the story of cricket tragic Teddy Brown who takes his local D-grade team on a tour of India.
David Pulbrook’s political drama Last Dance, produced by Antony Ginnane is a taut human story, torn from today’s headlines of love, loss and hope.
