Barry Took observed that the reason for the resurrection of Points of View was, as in its original run, merely there as a "filler" programme to plug a 5-minute gap in the schedules. In the 1981 book "Points of View", Took revealed:
"Then in 1979, Bill Cotton, now Deputy Managing Director of BBC Television but then Controller of BBC 1, bought a number of American comedies and planned to show them in the 10.30 to 11 pm spot in London and the South-East on Friday evenings. Now, the trouble with American half-hour comedies is that they only last 25 minutes, the balance being taken up by commercials, and it was suggested that to fill up the odd five minutes preceding Bilko or I Love Lucy, Points Of View could be revived. It was agreed. The producer, Colin Ward-Lewis, asked me to present it, it was trailed, that is to say people were asked to write to the reborn programme, and on 31 August 1979 at 10.30pm, Points Of View was back on the air."
