Whenever we think about blood, gore, and intense violence, only one name pops up in our mind: Mortal Kombat. NetherRealm’s iconic franchise is extremely popular among gamers and features some of the best fighting experiences ever. On the flip side, the Mortal Kombat movie, released in 2021, wasn’t that big of a success.
However, that hasn’t stopped Warner Bros. from taking a second chance and releasing another movie. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 is a fresh start and features big names Karl Urban and Jessica McNamee. While that’s all good, Warner Bros. has completely dropped the ball by not casting Dwayne Johson as Shao Kahn.

Simon McQuoid’s 2021 feature directorial debut with the martial arts fantasy film Mortal Kombat has certainly created a splash among fans but it was far from having an impressive box office gross. Still, New Line Cinema alongside Atomic Monster and Broken Road Productions is bringing a sequel to the first movie with Warner Brothers distributing the movie.
Sisi Stringer as Mileena in Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 2 hype is quite promising as the movie will bring back the essence of the action-adventure fighting video game series, Mortal Kombat. However, fans have one subtle demand for the studio asking the makers not to repeat one critical mistake in the sequel of the action movie.
Mortal Kombat 2 Will Be “Way Bigger” Hiroyuki Sanada in Mortal Kombat
The preparation of the movie following the announcement has been long, perhaps, this time Warner Brothers are expecting more appealing sequences embedded into the narrative.

The first film is of course Superman: Legacy which is set to release in the summer of 2025.
We’ve previously heard noises that this version of the character is going to be harder-edged than previous screen incarnations of the Supergirl character.

Long before headlining Amazon Prime’s The Boys series as Billy Butcher, Karl Urban attempted to lead a comic book film Dredd. The film was based on the comic strip Judge Dredd created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for the 2000 Ad comic magazine. However, Urban’s film was not the first adaptation of Judge Dredd, as Sylvester Stallone did it first in his 1995 film of the same name.
Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in Dredd (2012)
Even though both the Judge Dredd films underperformed financially, Karl Urban had an upper hand. Urban’s version was liked by critics and is also regarded as a cult classic by fans. Even the home media sales of Dredd were impressive.
It looks like The Boys fame already expected his film to be on higher ground as he had a savage message for Sylvester Stallone on the release of his remake.

Karl Urban marked the end of filming on Simon McQuoid‘s upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 on his Instagram, calling it “the most action packed fun I’ve ever had” on a film. Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in the follow-up to the 2021 film, also took the opportunity to show himself sans beard, which he’ll no doubt be growing back for The Boys, which will be returning for Season 4 later this year.
We’ve not seen a picture yet of Urban as everyone’s favourite action movie star, though MK2 producer Todd Garner had given us a peek of what to expect a few weeks back. Garner had taken to X last week to announce that filming had wrapped for the film, which according to Garner, won’t have a trailer out just yet.

Contradicting this, Garner affirmed on Twitter that the production will begin much sooner than the speculated date. “This is not true. We are filming before then…” he stated, bringing a wave of excitement among the fans. While he didn’t provide a specific start date, his promise of an earlier timeline has increased anticipation.

It’s been two years since the release of the live action Mortal Kombat reboot, and a sequel is on the way soon. Filming on Mortal Kombat 2 actually kicked off earlier this summer, you may recall, but it didn’t last long due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on at the time. But have no fear, because production on the movie sequel gets back underway real soon.
Responding to a report this week that suggested Mortal Kombat 2 will begin filming in early 2024, producer Todd Garner notes on Twitter that it’s actually kicking off even sooner.
“This is not true. We are filming before then,” Garner teases.
He writes in a follow-up tweet, “I promise I will keep the Mk Kommunity posted as soon as I have info on start date, etc. Everyone else is just speculating… or posting for clicks.”

Exclusive: With the end of 118-day actors strike at 12:01 a.m. Thursday morning, as well as a 148-day WGA strike back in September, global Hollywood feature productions can now resume.
And while studios warned the guild that movies wouldn’t be able to start until January due to the holidays, they’ve been in pre-production on re-starts for pics that had to pause back in July.
Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
Deadline hears that those movies set to go back this week or in very near future are Marvel Studios/Disney’s Deadpool 3 starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and directed by Shawn Levy (50% complete); Paramount’s Gladiator 2 over in Europe, Warner Bros’ Tim Burton directed Beetlejuice 2 (which only has two days left), Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2 (which has around a dozen days left) and Sony’s Venom 3.

Screen Producers Australia (Spa) has predicted the uptick in foreign productions shot in Australia will fall next year due to the writers and actors strikes in the U.S.
Responding to funding body Screen Australia’s Drama Report, which published this morning, producers body Spa said “negative effects”, primarily of the ongoing actors strike, would see the Aud$1.22B ($780M) spent by overseas companies dip.
As we reported in July, the likes of Mortal Kombat 2 and Apples Never Fall temporarily stopped production as industrial action broke out in the U.S., while big budget Apple TV+ series Metropolis was canned over fears around the strikes and spiralling costs.
The Drama Report released today shows foreign investment largely offset significant falls in investment on projects originating from Australia this year, mainly fuelled by feature films such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Fall Guy. TV shows...

Exclusive, Updated with PGA statement: More than 2,300 film and TV producers on Tuesday are delivering a message to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers: leave us out. The group delivered a petition to AMPTP President Carol Lombardini this morning demanding the dropping of the “P” from the acronym of the organization that just concluded a brutal negotiation with the WGA, and hopefully is in the final stages of a SAG-AFTRA deal after one of the longest strikes in Hollywood history.
Taking them out of a labor fight they were never part of is just the first step in what producers hope will lead to a redrawing of rules that leave them without health care, and being the last to be paid despite them being the early catalysts for film and TV projects.
The producers have amassed 2,338 signatures since June, when they first posted a petition on Change.

U.S. producer E. Bennett Walsh, who has made films including Mortal Kombat, Meg 2: The Trench and The Kite Runner across the Apac region, says he’s got his eye on Japan and Korea as the next hot destinations for footloose Hollywood productions.
“I think the opportunity in Asia is in Korea and Japan,” said Walsh. “Tokyo Vice recently had a great experience in Japan and there are more opportunities for productions like that. Some pieces of the Marvel movies have filmed in Korea, but that was just scratching the surface.”
Japan recently introduced an official production incentive to fund up to one half of the qualifying Japanese spend of international productions, while Korea has been operating incentives for several years. In addition, Japan’s largest studio Toho recently formed a joint venture production services outfit with established Japan-based producer Georgina Pope.

Finish Him: New Music Video from Wolfie’s Just Fine Induces Warm ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Nostalgia [Watch]
Whether he’s singing a beautiful song from the perspective of a Graboid in the Tremors franchise or waxing poetic about Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, musician Jon Lajoie (aka Wolfie’s Just Fine) has proven himself to be a master of pop culture nostalgia, carving out a unique niche for himself with his surprisingly tender and thoughtful reflections on the past.
Lajoie is back for the Halloween season with a brand new Wolfie’s Just Fine single, and this time around he’s penned a loving ode to Mortal Kombat 2. As always, Lajoie approaches the topic from a highly personal point of view. As he explains in the video’s brief description, “This is a song about the very first time I felt good at something. I was 13. True story.”

Now that the WGA and the AMPTP have finally found a similar plane of terms to agree on, the picket lines have thinned out with the writers going back to work. The big gains in the deal that the studios have made with the writers similarly apply to what the Screen Actors’ Guild has been fighting for since joining the strike. It is said that the resolved issues with the writers, which include the regulated use of AI for films and TV shows as well as residual pay for streaming projects, can also transfer to the actors’ terms. The actors’ union and the studios are scheduled to resume negotiations on Monday.
The resolution of the writers’ strike could hopefully mean a similar resolution for SAG-AFTRA as well. Once the actors’ union and the studios reach their own agreement, all the projects that have been put on pause will be back on after months of striking.

Walking Dead outfit Skybound Entertainment is turning its graphic novel Heart Attack into a sci-fi series.
Skybound has teamed with Japanese network Fuji TV on the project, with the former distributing globally and the latter producing and broadcasting locally.
From Mortal Kombat 2’s Shawn Kittelsen, Heart Attack explores a post-pandemic world where gene therapy has saved Americans from disease—only to give birth to Variants: people with powers so unique, the government denies their human rights. With cameras rolling soon, the Japanese TV adaption follows the love story between the novel’s protagonists; two teenagers from different backgrounds whose connection unlocks a secret power.
“We are delighted to have Fuji TV as a partner in adapting Heart Attack into a compelling sci-fi TV series,” said Rick Jacobs, Managing Partner of Linear Content at Skybound. “Shawn Kittelsen and Eric Zawadzki have created an emotionally and visually stimulating world that demands to be brought to life.

Plans to ax several screen funding programs in Australia are “hard to comprehend” and will be a “disaster” for the country’s film and TV industry, the country’s producers body has warned.
The New South Wales government, which presides over Sydney and its surrounding areas, is planning to cut a number of existing programs, including the Made in Nsw Fund.
The program funds domestic high-end TV and features and has been credited attracting overseas investment into local productions. The likes of local drama Mystery Road, Mad Max 2: Furiosa, Mother and Son, Disney+’s The Artful Dodger and Thor: Love and Thunder have benefitted from the fund, which Screen Producers Australia says created “jobs and multiples of economic activity in in Sydney and regional areas of the state.”

Australia’s producers have called out streamers for offering “unfair” commissioning deals with “unrealistic” budgets, a study has revealed.
Screen Producers Australia’s second Commissioning Survey revealed streamers ranked the lowest in overall deal fairness across the industry.
The streamers, who have been closely assessing their work in Australia amid government plans to introduce content quotas, ranked below industry average in seven of nine categories and went backwards year-on-year in six.
Spa CEO Matthew Deaner claimed many of their business practices were akin in “fishing ‘super-trawlers,'” and were potentially “permanently damaging our screen ecosystem.”
The news comes despite the launch of high profile streamer series such as Paramount+’s well-received The Last King of the Cross and Netflix’s Heartbreak High reboot. Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV+ are also active in the country, along with the local streamers.

The scheduled Aug. 24 release of the Eric Bana-starring Australian thriller film “Force of Nature: The Dry 2” has been indefinitely postponed, due to the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.
The strike is also forcing adjustments at the Melbourne International Film Festival, which starts in early August.
“It is with some regret, but a large amount of conviction that we have decided to postpone the release of ‘Force of Nature: The Dry 2’,” said Bana, who both stars and produces through his Pick Up Truck Pictures.
“Force of Nature: The Dry 2” is based on the bestselling novel by Jane Harper with Bana reprising his character, Aaron Falk, as a follow-on to the 2021 hit. Robert Connolly returns to direct the movie. Production is by Bruna Papandrea, Jodi Matterson and Steve Hutensky of Made Up Stories, alongside Bana and Connolly through his Arenamedia.

For the first time since 1960, both the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) are collectively on strike. WGA began its strike in May, and SAG recently joined in this labor dispute between the two guilds and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) after they failed to reach an agreement and previous respective contracts expired a day before each strike began.
While the productions with finished scripts were allowed to continue when WGA started the strike, the whole of Hollywood is now basically frozen since actors that are members of SAG aren’t allowed to film any movie and TV productions and also aren’t allowed to promote or give interviews for any of the coming movies while the strike is ongoing. The situation is trickier than ever, and it’s impossible to say how long it’s going to last.

While this may get repetitive since nearly every film production is shutting down per the actors’ strike, there are notable big-budget tentpole films that are finding themselves in the middle of the trouble. It was already reported that Gladiator 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 were halted as soon as the actors’ strike took effect. Then, Deadpool 3 would follow as the next major franchise project to shut down, which is unfortunate timing since Hugh Jackman just teased a set pic featuring him in a full-on Wolverine comic-accurate costume. Inevitably, fans have been spreading the pic and already posting fan art merely hours after the reveal as fanboy excitement has shot up even more for the sequel.

Screen Producers Australia, an Australian guild, moved quickly on Friday to explain that wholly local film and TV productions, even if they involve Screen Actors Guild members, can continue to roll despite the SAG-AFTRA strike notice and order, which has been in place since midnight Pacific time.
The English-speaking country has an oversize production and post-production sector, with much of it set up to service inbound foreign productions, sometimes known as “runaway productions.”
Strike orders “will apply to some scripted TV and feature films produced in Australia. Spa anticipates that a limited number of scripted ‘offshore’ (i.e. non-Australian) productions will be affected by the strike, with cast and crew stood down while the strike continues,” the Spa notice says.

Hollywood comes at a standstill after the Screen Actors Guild voted on a strike after negotiations broke down with the studio system in which Disney’s Bob Iger, Warner Bros’ David Zaslav, and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos called in Federal mediators for assistance with the conference. The Writers’ Guild had been on strike since the beginning of May, and the Screen Actors Guild will now join in picketing in a dual strike that hasn’t been seen since 1960. The plane of entertainment, however, is much more glut than the last time this happened. This is especially significant with streaming services and studio franchises running marathons of constant competition with each other.

“Mortal Kombat 2” producer Todd Garner and “Mortal Kombat” co-creator Ed Boon have seemingly teased the latter’s involvement with the upcoming sequel film.
Though neither party detailed specifically what Boon was up to, the duo hinted that he’s in Australia, where “Mortal Kombat 2” is filming — potentially to shoot a cameo.
Boon referenced his “kameo” in a vague tweet.

Garner then quote-tweeted him, saying “But wait, (some of) the fans say you aren’t involved…”

It’s unknown what the actual extent of Boon’s involvement is, outside of the hint that he’ll make some sort of appearance in the film.
Representatives for New Line Cinema did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

A couple weeks ago, Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid rounded out the cast of the sequel – which is apparently simply titled Mortal Kombat II. Last weekend, we saw a picture of several cast members in a restaurant together. And now Ludi Lin (who plays Liu Kang in these new films) took to Instagram to reveal that filming has officially started! He shared pictures of a clapperboard and his salad, and those can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The screenplay for Mortal Kombat II has been written by Jeremy Slater, who was the lead writer on the Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knight. Last year, Slater said that working on the project had been “really fun so far. … I’m working really closely with the director and the studios, and the game guys, and I think—I can’t say anything about the actual story, but I think they...

Producer James Wan revealed last night on Ig that filming is officially underway on Mortal Kombat 2, which has Simon McQuoid returning to the director’s seat from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater (“The Exorcist,” “Moon Knight”).
Martyn Ford (“The Sandman”), Desmond Chiam (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka) and Damon Herriman (House of Wax, The Nightingale) signed on a few weeks ago to play Shao Kahn, Edenian King Jerrod, Queen Sindel, and Netherrealm demon Quan Chi respectively.
It’s interesting to note that Herriman previously voiced the role of Kabal in the 2021 film.
Newcomers to the sequel also include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.
Plot details remain scarce for the sequel, though the new cast additions continue to signal a bigger, bloodier affair packed with fatalities.
