[Continued from Part 3]
Take four, the final take of why I wanted to write about Bigfoot: Bigfoot is fun.
I like dissecting movies. That is, after all, why I spend countless hours pounding out essays and reviews during my free time. I enjoy it so much that on my days off from work, instead of just watching more movies and relaxing, I take time out to essentially do more work (enjoyable work, fun work, rewarding work, but work nonetheless). Thinking about Bigfoot films- one of the strange little movie niches that I enjoy incredibly despite often minimal returns- is enjoyable, it’s complex, and it can provide insight into why images resonate the way they do, and why they stick with me beyond a film’s runtime, but it doesn’t explain why I started watching all these movies in the first place. At the heart of it, I like Bigfoot because he’s fun.

The instant I heard about 31 Days of Horror, I knew I wanted to write about Bigfoot movies. The idea came to me so quickly that it seemed to exist almost without genesis, as if I had somehow plucked the idea from some endless, ageless chthonic crypt populated with nothing but amorphous spirits built of mostly-forgotten esoteric genre-pictures wandering the non-Euclidean cyclopean masonry of the mythical grindhouse of history. The idea seemed so perfect- and so in my wheel house- that when it came time to actually write the thing I was struck with the confusion that had gripped so many of my friends that I had told about the idea. “Why do you want to do that?” was the second most popular question, right after, “Are there four Bigfoot movies worth talking about?” and while I knew the answer to the second (a resounding yes, hence why you’re reading...

And the hairy monster in the woods found footage train continues — The Lost Coast Tapes, The Woodsman, Bigfoot County, Exists, Willow Creek — with the latest film to hop aboard coming, inexplicably, from producer Drew Barrymore‘s Flower Films. All the ingredients are here, from the small town wary of outsiders to the Rv filled with outsiders who come rolling into town with digital cameras filming their every move, from the deadly mystery to the cheesy denouement, from the endless bickering to fill screentime to the questionable camera footage. Welcome to Happy Camp. The opening onscreen text tells us that Happy Camp, CA has reported over 627 missing people in the past 25 years, the highest number in the continental United States, and clearly that’s more impressive than simply saying there have been 628. One of the missing is a young boy named Dean Tanner who disappeared in 1989 while playing with his adopted brother Michael. Twenty...

Considering they're the best-known cryptids in history, the humanoids known variously as Sasquatch, Bigfoot, Yeti, the Abominable Snowman and so forth don't get much respect in modern cinema. While thousands of hours of film and video have been dedicated to these elusive man-beasts, there's something about the big dude that makes it nearly impossible for filmmakers to take him seriously, or even tell a semi-competent story about him. It's certainly not for a lack of trying; there have been nearly a hundred Bigfoot and Yeti movies released since the '50s. Old-fashioned giant monster romps, found-footage and slasher entries, feel-good family dramas, romantic comedies... even porno flicks. So why are nearly all of them so damn goofy? Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy these insane interpretations; in fact, the crazier they get, the more I dig 'em. So to honor this dubious cinematic legacy, here are two dozen of...

The film The Banshee Chapter directed and cowritten by newcomer Blair Erickson with a story written by equally unknown Daniel J. Healy uses the foundation of historical facts surrounding 1950s CIA project MKUltra as the jumping off point of The Banshee Chapter distributed by XLrator Media (also responsible for such films as Bigfoot The Lost Coast Tapes (2012) Under the Bed (2013) and American Mary (2013). XLrator has a penchant for off the wall horror films and thrillers and The Banshee Chapter is no exception. Kudos to the talent scouts at XLrator as they seem to have a pretty good eye.

As for where the production stands in direct comparison to other found footage films well... thats difficult to accurately judge. Its infinitely inferior to films like Rec Troll Hunter The Blair Witch Project Cloverfield and Apollo 18 (erase preconceived notions instilled by detractors and dont for a single second believe its only about moon rocks) but its stronger than features like Area 407 Bigfoot The Lost Coast Tapes The Devil Inside and Paranormal Activity 4. Therefore its probably safe to say this one resides somewhere in the middle of the pack. You arent likely to love it but you probably wont hate it outright.

Interview Jules-Pierre Malartre 22 Aug 2013 - 07:40
With his found-footage horror Willow Creek at FrightFest this month, we spoke to director Bobcat Goldthwait about its Bigfoot premise...
Made popular by the release of The Blair Witch Project, found footage movies slid into an almost totally forgettable category after a slew of disappointing forays into the genre over the past few years. It is difficult to believe that something novel could come out of the genre, but surprisingly, if you team it with an equally well-used subject, namely the decades-old legend of Bigfoot, you might end up with a recipe for a good fright movie.
That’s what Bobcat Goldthwait set out to do with Willow Creek, the “mockumentary” account of a couple’s adventure in the town of Willow Creek and the surrounding wilds that made Bigfoot a household name over 40 years ago with the shooting of the famous Patterson-Gimlin footage.

Last night, we introduced you to the poster for Willow Creek, a "found footage" Bigfoot film that Bobcat Goldtwait directed.
The 'foot has been the subject of a lot of found footage flicks as of late. There was The Lost Coast Tapes and, coming soon, Exists from Eduardo Sanchez, for example. The cryptozoological entity is ripe for this kind of narrative device.
Here to talk about Willow Creek is Goldthwait himself, via a video that surfaced at - where else? - The Bigfoot Report.
The interview awaits inside.

Corey Grant's Bigfoot horror flick 'The Lost Coast Tapes' arrived to mixed reviews last year. In particular cries from most demanding more explanation and more importantly more Bigfoot himself (indeed any would have been nice). So it's up to the sequel hopefully to fill in the gaps. 'Beyond The Lost Coast Tapes' is the name and the new one-sheet which you can see below manages to merge in the nicely lauded poster from the original into the eyeline of the mysterious big footed one. A sign of what route the sequel may take perhaps? Can we expect the action from the view of the monster? All we know for now is that the sequel will apparently drop the found footage style in favour of a more traditional filmmaking style....

For anyone who doesn’t believe in ghosts and witches but wants a found footage horror film that can appeal to their curiosity or sense of fear, then Director Corey Grant’s Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes is probably more your speed. Taking the same route as Steven Spielberg’s Jaws in the belief that showing less is more, The Lost Coast Tapes tells the story of four ambitious TV producers hoping to make a hit series out of an old man in northern California who claims to have a corpse of a young Bigfoot. For the most part, The Lost Coast Tapes succeeds in its use of mysterious howls, strange happenings, and brief glimpses of gigantic hairy beasts to create a thrilling mystery as to whether or not the whole thing is real or if the old man is just scamming them out of their money. Unfortunately, it loses...

This weekend "Paranormal Activity 4" opens, the latest in the phenomenally successful found-footage series about ghosts who primarily concern themselves with opening closet doors very slowly. But there's another found footage opus opening on Friday, one with more monstrous concerns. "Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes," is, for most of its running time at least, a nifty little horror movie about a group of seriously unlikable filmmakers who go into northern California's Lost Coast, a hotbed for Bigfoot sightings, to investigate claims that a man has an intact Sasquatch body. The problem is that, when it should really bring it, "Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes" drops the ball, resulting in a finale more enraging than terrifying. "Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes" starts out like most found-footage movies, with characters quickly established, along with the loose skeletal framework of the plot. Sean (Drew Rausch, with a velvety radio host...

Corey Grant is an African-American director with such titles as Hip-Hop Task Force and its follow-up, Studio, on his resume. Stereotypically speaking, he's not your typical horror director.
But this fearless filmmaker recently trekked to Northern California with his crew and brought back Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes, which opens this Friday, October 19th.
"It's about a disgraced television host who was hoaxed by a fictional UFO story on a previous show, and it killed his career," Grant said in describing Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes. "Now he stages his comeback when he finds out there is a Bigfoot hunter who supposedly has an image of Bigfoot. So he figures he can do a show, but this time do it about people who pull hoaxes. Then he can bring his career back. So, of course, they travel up to Northern California to find this Bigfoot hunter, but when they get up there,...

I'm a bit confused here, bigfoot flicks aren't supposed to look awesome. Yet here I am, playing the new trailer for director Corey Grant's upcoming found footage flick, The Lost Coast Tapes, and what do I see? Not only bigfoot, but what appears to be a pretty wicked platform in general. This one may just be the bigfoot movie I've been waiting for! While I'm labeling this trailer “new”, it actually surfaced about a month ago, I've just been slacking on my job apparently, because this one never should have slipped through the cracks. Found footage flicks can be extraordinary films if executed properly, and I've got to admit, this is one of those rare trailers that has my interest genuinely piqued.

While we wait for Eduardo Sanchez's found footage Bigfoot flick Exists to come our way, we'll be treated to similar found footage shenanigans of the Bigfoot variety with The Lost Coast Tapes which Xlrator Media is supposed to release this fall.
Corey Grant directed the film which concerns Sean Reynolds, an eager television host on a mission to debunk famed Bigfoot hunter Carl Drybeck, who claims to possess the body of a dead Sasquatch.
When the team arrives in Northern California they are immediately thrilled - Drybeck’s zealous belief in his hoax is going to make for a wildly entertaining episode of campy-paranormal television. However, when Drybeck’s hunting partner is mysteriously attacked, the team is left alone and reality begins to set in. The evidence is stacking up, Drybeck’s theory may not be a hoax, and the existence of Bigfoot might just be the least of their worries.

A bit of new artwork and a short teaser video have come our way for the cinéma vérité style Bigfoot flick, The Lost Coast Tapes, and in the interest of science we've decided to share them ... right after we take a plaster cast of the evidence, that is.
The Lost Coast Tapes is slated for release this year in the UK, Japan, Benelux, and Scandinavia. Continental Media (sales rep) is hosting a buyers screening on April 12th in Hollywood to determine who will be releasing the film Stateside. “The tale of Bigfoot is an American legend. With the current success of Animal Planet’s ‘Finding Bigfoot’ and the continuing interest in the Pov genre, Tlct is ripe with domestic potential,” says Continental Media partner, Matthew Shreder. “We are excited to be introducing this fun and entertaining film to Us distributors at this time.”
Check out the new one-sheet and plot crunch below.

I’m sure director Corey Grant has to say the title of his upcoming horror flick “The Lost Coast Tapes” several times before someone actually understands what he’s saying. For fun, try telling someone about this film and see how many attempts it takes for your friend/companion/spouse/lover to figure out what the hell you’re attempting to articulate. It’s a blast! Below you’ll find the latest one-sheet for Grant’s aforementioned genre effort, a film which follows a documentary team as they attempt to debunk yet another Big Foot story. Turns out there’s something much more dangerous lurking in them there woods. If you require more information about “The Lost Coast Tapes”, take a stroll through the film’s official Facebook page. The one-sheet discussed earlier is positioned below...

First announced at Afm back in November comes from New Breed Entertainment and director Corey Grant, The Lost Coast Tapes, starring Drew Rausch, Ashley Wood, Rich McDonald, Frank Ashmore and Noah Weisberg. "A cynical investigative journalist and his documentary team travel to a remote cabin to debunk a Cryptozoologist's claim of finding a dead Bigfoot, but their film quickly becomes a record of their life and battle against an unseen horror." The first piece of art was pretty impressive, reminding me of the one sheet for Frozen and Open Water. A second has just debuted. Keep up with the film on Facebook.

When Paranormal Activity 3 scares up nearly $54 million at the box office in a weekend, you know that the found footage phenomenon is not dying soon. A new Pov horror-thriller called The Lost Coast Tapes is currently being sold to distributors at American Film Market next week. The story follows "an investigative journalist and his group that travel to Northern California to find the legendary Sasquatch, but the footage of that trip is now all that remains." The film was directed by Corey Grant, with production already wrapped on the film. Check out the full poster below:
Here are some more details according to IMDb:
After a "Bigfoot Hunter" claims to possess the body of a dead Sasquatch, a disgraced investigative journalist stakes his comeback -- and the lives of his documentary film crew -- on proving the find to be a hoax. Obviously shit goes down once they actually find the creature.

Cinéma vérité style filmmaking and Bigfoot should go together like peanut butter and jelly! Ash and the evil dead! Jason and naked teens! It's really a wonder that anyone has yet to make an effective film focusing on the legend of the Sasquatch using this technique, but if the first poster for The Lost Coast Tapes is any indication of what's to come, one may well be on its way.
