In All Day and a Night, the new Netflix crime film from writer/director Joe Robert Cole, Ashton Sanders (Moonlight) plays Jahkor Abraham Lincoln, a young Oakland man whose life in one of that city’s most underserved communities has come to an all-too-familiar crossroads: does he follow in the path of his currently jailed father J.D. (Jeffrey Wright) and plunge full-on into a life of crime and gang culture, or does he pursue a different path — he wants to be a rapper and has started making his own mixtapes — and try to break the cycle for the sake of his newborn son?
Actually, as the film begins, that decision seems to be all but moot. Like way too many films these days, All Day and a Night begins near the end: we meet Jahkor as he commits a brutal, heartless crime and then watch as the movie retraces...

The filmmakers behind “All Day and a Night” dig a big hole for their main character right off the bat. No sooner have we met aspiring Oakland rapper Jahkor (Ashton Sanders) than we see him gun down a man and his wife in front of their 10-year-old daughter — quietly, coldly and without a moment’s hesitation.
Under normal circumstances, audiences are accustomed to feeling some empathy for the leading character in the movies they see; it’s part of the moviegoing contract that the people we spend the most time watching are going to be people we can feel for, and often even like. But “All Day and a Night” reveals our leading man as a cold-blooded killer in the first five minutes, essentially daring us to feel anything for the guy for the next two hours.
It’s a bold move, particularly when Jahkor steadfastly refuses to explain himself...

Filmmaker Joe Robert Cole is about to take on the biggest project of his career to date, with the upcoming Marvel tent-pole movie, Black Panther. Hired to write the first solo movie of the first black superhero of mainstream American comics, the pressure is undoubtedly on for the young scribe. He could not be better placed for the job, however, having written, directed and edited his own film – Amber Lake – in 2011, and then having participated in Marvel’s two-year in-house writing program. The combination of a broad experience behind the camera, along with time spent in Marvel-specific writing rooms means that his in-progress script for Black Panther is something to be very excited about indeed.
The story he will be taking on is that of T’Challa, also known as Black Panther – warrior king of the technologically advanced fictional African nation of Wakanda. Having teased his appearance with mention of...

His solo movie doesn.t come out until 2018, and the character won.t make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut until next year, but there has already been a great deal of talk about who will direct Black Panther. Selma.s Ava DuVernay was very publicly courted by Marvel, and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray has recently been mentioned, but as it turns out, there.s a very good reason why no one has been given the job yet: Marvel is still waiting to see a script before making that decision, and it sounds like it may be a while before that happens. According to The Wrap, Marvel is closing in on a deal to secure the services of a scribe, and are near inking a contract with Joe Robert Cole to pen the script. Though he’ll make his debut in Captain America: Civil War, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther has his own film on Disney and Marvel’s sprawling schedule set for 2018. It now looks like Joe Robert Cole will be the man to write the script for the stand-alone adventure. Cole, who has writing and directing experience via 2011’s Amber Lake, is part of the comic book film studio’s in-house writing program, which also gave Guardians Of The Galaxy/Captain Marvel’s Nicole Perlman her entry into the McU. According to The Wrap, Cole had been attempting to crack the script for Inhumans, but isn’t attached to the film at this point. He is, however, in advanced negotiations to bring Black Panther’s story to life.Exactly what the film will be is naturally still a mystery and somewhat standard for Kevin Feige’s crew. We’d imagine there will...

Joe Robert Cole is nearing a deal to pen the "Black Panther" film at Marvel Studios reports The Wrap.
Despite a flurry of internet reports in recent months, including one this week that F. Gary Gray was in contention before he began talks for "Furious 8," there are reportedly no directors being considered at this stage.
The trade says after the project was turned down by "Selma" helmer Ava DuVernay, and after the subsequent media mess that ensued, Marvel has decided to wait for the script to be finished first and so the job of helming the film is now considered to be wide-open.
Cole has been part of Marvel's in-house writer's program for some time, and previously wrote and directed the 2011 indie thriller "Amber Lake". Disney is currently slated to release "Black Panther" on July 6th 2018.

When’s that comic book movie coming out, with the ant-sized man? This and all similar questions answered in our comic book movie calendar.
Comic book fans of the world - were you planning on spending your spare cash on anything other than cinema visits and DVD box-sets for the next six years? Well tough, because Hollywood has other ideas.
Ever since Bryan Singer’s X-Men movie jump-started the comic book movie trend in 2000 (building on the stellar work of Richard Donner and Tim Burton in the decades prior), Fox, Sony, Warner Bros., Disney and Marvel Studios have all been repeatedly cashing-in on the resurgent popularity of capes, cowls and anything ending in ‘Man’.
Now, the sheer size of the comic book movie-making world has reached a critical mass. There are now seven such films (at least) slated for every year between 2016 and 2019. There’s also a few confirmed for 2020 already,...

Looks like Inhumans is one step closer to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reports are saying that writer/director Joe Robert Cole as penned a treatment for the upcoming movie. Mr. Cole credits include writing and directing the film Amber Lake and acting in the movie White Dwarf.
Inhumans actually makes a lot of sense as the Kree were instrumental in their creation and would help further any off Earth movies Marvel wants to produce in the future. Word is that the script was developed in house just like Guardians of the Galaxy and then shopped around to fimmakers.
With another Guardians of the Galaxy being developed Marvel seems to be banking on its space properties and this would be a perfect property to use. If they were able to take Guardians and make it a hit I’m banking Inhumans could be a surprise hit as well.

Just a few days ago, Guardians of the Galaxy actor Vin Diesel teased fans (again) about The Inhumans, a film that’s been rumored to come down Marvel’s pipeline for quite some time. Now, it seems that the studio is finally moving forward with the project, which already has a script from Amber Lake scribe Joe Robert Cole. The next step is to take the script and find a filmmaker to bring the cosmic superhuman team to life.
For those unfamiliar with the characters, the Inhumans were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1975. Their history is filled with some confusing cosmic mumbo jumbo, but the basic idea is that they’re an advanced race of humans, who were genetically created by the Kree alien race millions of years ago. The Kree succeeded in creating a strain of humanity with extraordinary abilities, but abandoned their experiment due to...

With Marvel having established a slate of release dates through 2019, now the studio must decide what those movies will be. "The Avengers 3" and "Doctor Strange" seem inevitable, but there's a handful of long developing projects that may yet see the light of day. Will "The Inhumans" be one of them? The last we heard about the project was nearly a year ago, when it was rumored that the Lee-Kirby creation would be raw material for a tentpole, but that had been the case since at least 2011. However, today comes news that development for an Inhumans film might be further along than anyone knew. Collider reports that Joe Robert Cole ("Amber Lake") has turned in an Inhumans script that Marvel likes, and the studio is now seeking filmmakers. And much like "Guardians Of The Galaxy," the expectation is that whichever filmmaker selected will add their own spin on the material, in the same.

Mekenna Melvin dishes about 'Chuck'Exclusive Interview by Michael Aaron Gallagher
It's no secret that "Chuck" is adored by television fans and critics alike. Now in its third season, the quirky spy dramedy recently welcomed actress Mekenna Melvin to its diverse cast. Originally from Saratoga, California, her training in martial arts, comedy and drama, make her a triple threat on screen.
As Alex McHugh, Melvin plays the daughter of John Casey (played by Adam Baldwin) and the love interest of Morgan Grimes (played by Joshua Gomez).
I recently had the chance to talk to Mekenna about her work on the NBC series and what she enjoys most about her character.
Michael Aaron Gallagher: "Tell me a little bit about how you landed your role on 'Chuck?'"
Mekenna Melvin: "I got the role in kind of an exciting way. I was originally auditioning for a one-word co-star...
