Compelling. Inventive. Historic. Unnerving.
mythico-942-1656605 January 2011
The life and afterlife of charismatic explorer Pietro Savorgnan di Brazza is told like a fairy tale, but one with violence and corruption at its heart. Illustrated with an inventive combination of photographs, paper cut outs, video and first person interviews the film juxtaposes the pacifist intentions of Brazza with that of power hungry imperialists. Years later, this same fight of good against evil is played out between King Makoko, spiritual leader of Congo-Brazzaville, and the treacherous president of that city. When the film ends, you feel your curiosity for this dark continent and about its history has only begun, only just been awakened.
