As expected, Taylor Swift won top honors at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, which were presented in a new format that blended performances with an online presentation of winners and recorded acceptance speeches. She claimed Top Artist for the third time in her career, tying Drake for the most honors in that category. But she didn’t collect the most hardware on Sunday night? That would be Morgan Wallen, who collected 11 trophies. Check out the complete list of winners here.

The 2023 Billboard Music Awards didn’t air on TV this year and the event was streamed online through videos uploaded to the Billboard website.
Pre-taped performances and acceptance speeches, which were filmed all around the world while artists are on tour, made up the awards show this year.
Morgan Wallen was the big winner of the night with 11 wins while Taylor Swift followed closely behind with 10 wins, including the Top Artist prize.
Taylor and Drake are now tied for the most wins ever at the Billboard Music Awards.
“Well this is unreal,” Taylor told fans in her speech. “The fact that you guys have given me 10 Billboard Awards — I’m talking to the fans specifically. None of this happens without you. The Billboards base everything off of what you are listening to and what you’re passionate about, and I’m so honored that this year you made The Eras Tour so magical.

These awards are based on fan interactions with music, but they’re not decided by an online vote. Instead, Billboard decides its finalists and winners using the metrics that determine the Billboard charts, including record sales, radio airplay and online streaming performance. Previously held during the spring, these awards have also moved to the fall to line up with the tracking period for Billboard’s year-end charts: November 19, 2022 through October 21, 2023.
Taylor Swift led the nominations with 20 citations including Top Artist. She had multiple albums at the top of the charts, and her “Eras Tour” gave all her past music a major commercial bump as well. But was she able to overcome Morgan Wallen, a 17-time finalist this year across 16 categories?...

The 2023 Billboard Music Awards are set to take place on Sunday, November 19, and it looks like it’ll be yet another awards coronation for Taylor Swift. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, she’s the favorite to win Top Artist. It would be her third victory in that race, which would tie Drake‘s record for the most in the category’s history.
These awards are strictly a popularity contest, but they’re not decided by fans voting online like the MTV Video Music Awards or the American Music Awards. Instead, they’re decided by the same metrics that are used to generate the weekly Billboard charts, like album sales, song sales, radio airplay and streaming. And during the eligibility period, Swift has been nothing if not successful. It might, in fact, be the most dominant period of her career.

Since exploding into popular consciousness with XXX, a 2011 masterwork detailing his crazed life of sex, pills, and weed, Danny Brown has served as a lodestone for modern rap’s perilous embrace of hard drugs. The Detroit rapper utilized a manic, strangely hyper cadence seemingly fueled by too much Molly. More importantly, he created music with fearlessness, seemingly unconcerned with how the oft-conservative rap world perceived him. When Edm soared in popularity, he penned Old, a wildly exuberant 2013 valentine to getting wasted as an elderly thirtysomething Mc while collaborating with alt-pop...

Being a superstar doesn’t always mean having chart hits.
From massive rock groups and boy bands to iconic vocalists and singer-songwriters, there are countless acts that have managed to inspire generations of entertainers and win over millions of fans without having ever actually notched a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Over the years, there have been some especially surprising icons who would seem to have a few No. 1s under their belt, but for whatever reason, their songs never managed to wind up sitting at the top spot of the chart.

Elton John‘s “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” features a baffling reggae breakdown. John Lennon added that section to “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” himself. In an interview, the former Beatle discussed why he worked with the “Your Song” singer. Shockingly, the aforementioned cover of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was a much bigger hit than The Beatles’ version.
Why John Lennon played on Elton John’s cover of ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’
“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is many things, but it doesn’t have much of a Caribbean vibe. That’s why adding a reggae section to the track feels so incongruous. It’s even stranger when you learn it was the “Imagine” singer’s idea.

Sure, by that point the Marvel Cinematic Universe had established itself as the dominant force in popular culture, but taking a team of C-list superheroes that includes a talking tree and giving them the blockbuster treatment? Until the moment James Gunn's movie actually hit theaters, it seemed like a fool's errand. But Gunn proved all of us wrong in a big, bad way. A major part of the movie's success? The brilliant stroke of a soundtrack, dubbed "Awesome Mix Vol. 1."
Gunn did indeed use a musical score, composed by Tyler Bates, in the film. But pop songs that Peter Quill would have heard on Earth as a kid were woven into the fabric of "Guardians of the Galaxy" as well, with the sounds included on Star-Lord's mixtape anchoring the soundtrack. The death of Tina Turner is heartbreaking for anyone who’d ever marveled at the brilliance, basked in the warmth, been enthralled by the titanic talent of the woman born Anna Mae Bullock. Her resilience became an inspiration around the world, and Tina Turner’s musical and cultural legacy is unparalleled — an influence that stretches across generations and genres. The Queen of Rock & Roll title means so much in regards to her; when people struggled to remember and name historical figures like Big Mama Thornton and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Tina...

The Beatles were a magical band. Paul McCartney and John Lennon found it easy to write songs together in the early days, and those shared hits helped propel the band to international fame and a slew of No. 1 songs and albums. Still, One Direction set a record The Beatles never could with their debut album.

Watch Tina Turner Flip the Rock Script and Usher in the Seventies With ‘Proud Mary’ on ‘Ed Sullivan’
It was all happening for Tina and Ike Turner in 1970. They’d spent the Sixties building a steady head of steam in the U.S., and especially abroad, with hits like “So Fine,” and their rendition of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” Their biggest smash wouldn’t come until 1971 — though Tina and Ike were already teasing it at the start of the new decade on The Ed Sullivan Show.

According to a report in Deadline, Grammy Award-winning pop singer, soul icon, and legend of rock 'n' roll Tina Turner has died at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland. She was 83.
Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock, became a sensation in the 1960s, singing soul tunes with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. In the 1980s, after escaping a particularly brutal marriage, Turner shot to superstardom with a series of massive hit singles like "What's Love Got To Do With It?," "Better Be Good To Me," "One of the Living," and "Back Where You Started." She won eight Grammys in her career, and three of her songs were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, 2003, and 2012. In 2018, she received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. She was in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1988 to 1997 for the Largest Paying Rock Concert Attendance from a Solo Artist.
All told, Turner sold more than 180 million albums worldwide.

Keith Richards shot to fame as the hard-living guitarist for The Rolling Stones. That’s been his main gig for more than 60 years, the band for whom he wrote what might be his favorite song. Still, Richards’ first solo album proved to be a hit even though he had to be pressured into making it.

Richards was a rock star and a musical trendsetter with The Rolling Stones. He was also late to the party among members of his band — Richards was the last to go solo.
The guitarist focused his energy on the Stones for decades. For better or worse, Richards gave everything he had to the band. He never really considered going it alone until the late 1980s.

On a recent morning in Cannes, Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan sat over coffee at the Hotel Martinez and recalled a phone call he received nearly 60 years ago, not long after he’d made a splash on the British folk scene. On the other end of the line was a rising screenwriter and director called Ken Loach. “He said he was making his first feature…and would I help him with the music?” Donovan told Variety.

Produced by early Kendrick Lamar collaborator Scoop DeVille, the track features a scorching guitar riff that comes in right before the chorus and includes sultry lyrics like, “Curve your inhibition tonight, give you violent peace/ You been locked down, I got the key, yeah/ Lil’ devil, set you free.”
“Give It to Me” arrives after Miguel’s 2021 EP Art Dealer Chic Vol. 4, which was followed by his Gully soundtrack contribution “Violent Dreams.” His last full-length, War & Leisure, dropped in 2017.

Harry Belafonte was a child when his mother sent him and his brother to live with relatives in Jamaica.
He was born in Harlem on the cusp of the Great Depression, and after his father left the family, Belafonte’s mom thought her children might fare better in her home country. She wanted to save them from the deleterious effects of her precarious immigration status and poverty. Harry, as he writes in his memoir My Song, was a difficult child, prone to fighting with other kids. His mother — single, newly devout in her faith and working tirelessly to make ends meet — thought this move would help her troubled son.
Salvation is a tall order, but Jamaica did leave its mark. In Kingston, among his mother’s people, Belafonte discovered the sounds on which he would base part of his artistry. Many of the songs he sang later in his career,...

Their songs endure decades later. Bassist John Paul Jones explained the remarkable side of Led Zeppelin’s creativity in their music.
Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones | Ed Perlstein/Redferns John Paul Jones said Led Zeppelin’s work ethic was ‘remarkable’
Led Zeppelin was unlike any other band before they ever released a record. Founding guitarist Jimmy Page self-financed their debut album. Then he insisted that the band be on Atlantic Records (instead of an imprint) so they would have to share a label with Eric Clapton.
An upstart band calling the shots was unheard of. It still is.
Despite having the artistic freedom to create what they wanted at the pace they wanted, Led Zeppelin spent...

George Harrison wrote “Something” for The Beatles’ Abbey Road. It’s a stunning love ballad that proved Harrison was capable of writing hit songs for the band, since his songwriting talents were limited with the fab four. Many famous artists, such as Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles, have covered it. However, the most surprising rendition might have come from his fellow bandmate, Paul McCartney.

Another week, another notch on country singer Morgan Wallen‘s belt. His “One Thing at a Time” spent its seventh straight week at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended April 20. The Beatles never reunited after they broke up in 1970. The members collaborated on several projects, often volunteering their instrumental talents on one of the member’s solo projects. Fans yearned for the band to return to its glory days, and Ringo Starr even suggested The Beatles form a new group, but without Paul McCartney.

The Beatles broke up in 1970 as tensions between the friends and bandmates had caused the band to implode. Each member embarked on solo careers where they succeeded, and some even formed new bands, such as Paul McCartney and Wings. Unfortunately, a reunion never happened before Lennon’s death in 1980.
Even though their solo careers were going well, they didn’t produce the same magic they did when they played together. However, there wasn’t unanimous interest in reforming The Beatles.
