Huge Improvement From The Past Few Weeks

Warning: Spoilers
I was beyond thrilled when it was announced that Willem Dafoe would be hosting with Katy Perry as the musical guest. Willem is a great actor and Katy Perry is one of my favorite singers of all time. Let me just say that neither of them disappointed! Willem was hilarious! My favorite sketch was probably "Office Song". I died laughing when Willem took that chair, started scream-singing, and just violently tossed it out the window. He did great. Katy Perry, as I previously mentioned, is one of my favorite singers of all time. I was raised listening to her music, so I've always had a soft spot for her music. For those who know Katy's style, you know that she is very extravagant and theatrical. I loved the excessive theming in both of her performances and her vocals definitely didn't disappoint either. Overall, this is a great episode and a huge step up from the past two episodes. Great job, Lorne Michaels!

Willem did the best he could with bad material

How do you give Willem Dafoe, a thespian and well-regraded actor, such bad material to work with?

I was initially excited when I heard that Willem Dafoe is going to host SNL. It's crazy how he hasn't gotten around to it given his theater roots and background.

Unfortunately, the writers gave him not so good material, which he does his best to elevate. His monologue was wonderful, but everything else just sucked.

Brilliant performance from Willem Defoe who has always given a good performance
Kamran0930 January 2022
When Willem Defoe made a surprise appearance in the last week's episode I knew this one was going to be something worth watching and it made that episode feel all the more mediocre.

Defoe brings a magnetism and dynamic that few current actor's can manage. My personal highlight was the hilarious skit towards the end where he is presented as an author of "blowing yourself" instead of "knowing yourself".

I also enjoyed his fun monologue (keep forgetting he is from Wisconsin).

I give this episode a 9/10.

This seasons best show!

Warning: Spoilers
The host was right on the money! The self help book author interview was a 10 as the fake ad to boost the over 40 males sexual prowess with a pill. Katy Perry was the top musical performance of the season- brilliantly staged ( looks like spending time in Black Rock City has her creative juices going). The cold open skit with the Russian Social media posts was very spot on. In fact no skit bombed like in some recent weeks. Weekend update was a solid 8. Btw I am in my late 60's so have seen a lot of SNLs and this falls into the top 50 of all time.

Missing it's teeth

I watched this episode of SNL and something didn't sit right with me, it felt "off", but I couldn't figure out why immediately.

I tried re-watching some episodes from the 2000's and early 2010's and it suddenly hit me: The show has no teeth. Not anymore.

I think somewhere along the line SNL in the mid-2010's decided they couldn't make fun of celebrities anymore, unless they are politicians, because the show has just become so weak and safe with its humor.

Case in point, 1/29's episode. A skit about bad dogs? A song parody about...insomnia. Really? Where is the biting social commentary? The satire? I suppose the cast all want jobs in future Hollywood projects nowadays so they can't afford to offend anyone for fear of missing out on future roles.

Gross. Take some risks outside of politics. When this show is safe it is boring!
