The Golden Horse Film Festival, which operates the premier awards in the Chinese-language film industry, has teamed up with Cannes’ Marché du Film to showcase a handful of new films and projects under the banner Golden Horse Goes to Cannes.
To be presented May 16, the five films comprise new works from directors Chen Yu-hsun, Yang Ya-che, Huang Xi, Giddens Ko and John Hsu, with such high-profile producers as Lee Lieh, Sylvia Chang, Aileen Li, Jeffrey Chan and Hou Hsiao-hsien.
Yang Ya-che, known for Golden Horse-winning “The Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful,” and for shaping the careers of several actors, returns behind the camera with “The Chronicles of Libidoists.”
It was a standout at the Golden Horse project market, while at the production stage, the scandalous nature of its erotic take on “The Little Mermaid” tale meant that the names of the cast had to be kept secret.

Joseph Kahn primarily works as a music video director, having collaborated with the likes of Taylor Swift, Backstreet Boys, Rob Zombie, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, U2, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Eminem, Maroon 5, Shakira, and many more – but he has also made a few feature films over the years. He made his feature debut with the 2004 action comedy Torque, and has followed that up with the comedy Bodied and the horror film Detention – which we’ve covered for both Awfully Good and Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Now, Variety reports that Kahn is making a creature feature called Ick, and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) have signed on to star in the film.
Ick is coming our way from Interstellar Entertainment and producer Steven Schneider. The film aims to “evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy.

Variety’s report notes, “The film aims to evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy.”
The site also teases a blending of “old school prosthetics and state of the art visual effects.”
Joseph Kahn’s Ick centers on “Hank (Routh), a high school science teacher who still pines for his childhood sweetheart (Suvari). While discovering he may have a teenage daughter (Malina Weissman), Hank must grapple with a terrifying alien anomaly invading their small town.”
The film was written by Sam Laskey, Dan Koontz and Joseph Kahn.

Actor Elizabeth Lail is the latest to join the growing cast of Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s, Deadline reports today.
Production is currently underway in New Orleans, with Emma Tammi (The Wind) at the helm of the video game adaptation.
Lail is no stranger to horror and is best known for her performance as Beck in season one of Netflix’s popular series “You,” as well as lead turns in the 2019 horror film Countdown and horror series “Dead of Summer.” She joins previously announced stars Josh Hutcherson (Tragedy Girls, Detention), Matthew Lillard (Thir13en Ghosts, Scream), Kat Conner Sterling (“The Gifted”), and Mary Stuart Masterson (Skin).
While character details remain under wraps, we can at least celebrate that Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has been hard at work on the monstrous animatronics!

Taiwan-France film “Salli” marks the feature debut of Taipei-based filmmaker Lien Chien-Hung after several acclaimed shorts and a TV movie.
“Salli,” which won the grand prize at the Chinese-language film project matching and co-production platform Golden Horse Film Project Promotion in 2019, is a work-in-progress selection at the Hong Kong — Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf). The Mandarin-, Taiwanese-, English- and French-language film follows a lonely middle-aged chicken farmer Hui-Chun, who doesn’t speak English and develops a romantic relationship through an app with a French man who calls himself Martin. In the online world, Hui-Chun is Salli. Despite everyone calling it a romance scam, she wants to prove that love indeed exists.
“The reason why I want to make ‘Salli’ is because of very common news in Taiwan. Many men and women are deceived by love on the internet,” Lien tells Variety. “As bystanders, we always laugh at why these people are so stupid.

Netflix has scooped up the global streaming rights to Taiwanese horror blockbuster Incantation, which it will release worldwide on July 8. “I’m really proud that Incantation is going to be released on Netflix globally, maximizing the number of people who can watch it,” said Kevin Ko, writer-producer-director of Incantation. “It has always been my dream to make films that travel around the world and are watched by every horror fan on Earth, keeping them awake at night. The Taiwan Pavilion returns to the Marché du Film this year with a beefed-up version after two years of interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, presenting 91 titles including the latest box office hits at home, elaborate international co-productions, as well as technology-driven Xr projects.
Genre films with a solid plot and production, rather than a stellar cast, can easily win the hearts of audiences at home, according to filmmakers behind some of the featured projects.
International co-productions will continue to play a vital role in boosting local opportunities as well as taking Taiwan talents abroad, but the ongoing pandemic restrictions on the self-governed island will certainly have an impact on making international connections.

When Taiwan auteur Chung Mong-hong’s acclaimed drama “A Sun” became a hit among film critics and film buffs from around the world after Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge named it the best film of 2020, it had reignited the hope and expectations of the island’s cinematic offerings. The buzz and excitement were seen as what could be the beginning of a comeback of Taiwanese cinema on the international stage.
Nearly two years on, the momentum is still there, but Taiwanese filmmakers are approaching the international stage with a more pragmatic approach. “A Sun,” and the director’s follow-up feature, “The Falls,” which both premiered on the international festival circuit (and now stream on Netflix), have certainly brought Taiwanese projects more exposure, according to industry insiders, but it was not yet enough to revive the glory from the golden days of Hou Hsiao-Hsien (“City of Sadness”) and Edward Yang...

Film scholar and former director of Taiwan’s Film Archive Huang Jianye is set to chair the jury for the 58th iteration of the Taipei-based Golden Horse Awards, the festival said Wednesday.
The awards are now heading into the third year without participants from China after a controversial awards speech in 2018 included mentions of Taiwanese independence. The comments led Beijing to order its citizens to make a hasty retreat that year and impose a ban on attending what had once been known as the Oscars of Asia.
Without China’s presence, the Golden Horse Awards have shrunk in scope, but are still soldiering on. Festival screenings are set to begin Nov. 11 ahead of the awards ceremony on Nov. 27 in Taipei.

Singapore-based distributor and producer Clover Films has partnered with Taiwan’s Machi Xcelsior Studios for the worldwide theatrical rights (except Taiwan and South Korea) to Giddens Ko’s “Till We Meet Again.”
The film is a fantasy romance starring Kai Ko (“You Are The Apple Of My Eye”), Gingle Wang (“Detention”) and Vivian Sung (“Our Times”) that recently garnered eleven nominations at the Golden Horse Film Awards.
The producers will retain the rights in Taiwan. Hive Filmworks will be handling the theatrical rights in Korea. The movie, produced for a budget of $3.5 million, has been dated for release on 24 November in Taiwan.

"Have you forgotten? Or are you just afraid?" Dekanalog Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for an acclaimed Taiwanese horror film titled Detention, directed by John Hsu. This originally opened in Taiwan back in 2019, and is finally showing in the US after playing at various festivals - including Fantasia, Busan, and the New York Asian Film Festival last year. Set in 1962 in Taiwan, during the time of the White Terror. Martial law is in full force. In a time of extreme repression, all ideas considered to be dissident are banned, and the culprits are tortured or executed. Adapted from a video game, based on true events, this "masterful debut from director & co-writer John Hsu creates at once a shocking historical drama, melancholy coming-of-age tale + nightmarish horror film that recalls the masterworks of Guillermo del Toro, and with enough blood, striking sound design, art direction, and special effects to evoke the best of Silent Hill.

Gotham-based distributor Dekanalog has picked up Taiwanese horror flick Detention, an adaptation of a video game by director John Hsu. If all goes well they plan to release the pic in theaters, but definitely in virtual cinemas, on October 8th. Just in time for Halloween season. Our own Josh caught Detention when it played at Fantasia last Summer. You may find his full review here, but here are a couple positive points taken from it. Detention is a fairly slick, well-executed, topical horror film along the lines of films like Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth or Issa López's Tigers Are Not Afraid.... Hsu's film doesn't really feel like an adaptation at all, in fact, it's a effective, spooky, dread filled experience that works...

As this past week was the first week of December, Netflix got things rolling with the usual glut of new titles. It’s easy to miss everything that went up on the streaming giant over the past seven days, so we’ve compiled a handy recap of every single movie and TV show that dropped from Monday, November 30th to Sunday, December 6th. In total, that’s 58 new additions.
The 1st obviously delivered the bulk of the haul, serving up a ton of fresh films to keep you entertained as we begin the festive season. Among the highlights was the original Jurassic Park and one of its sequels and if you missed them at the beginning of the week, you can also catch the likes of romcom 50 First Dates, animated film Monster House and the one and only E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. As for TV shows, all of Stargate was likewise added the same day.

Just because December is a time to celebrate festive movies, that doesn’t mean horror needs to take a back seat, and this month will be full of new genre offerings for fans to dig into.
Already available is Icelandic vampire film Thirst, where an addict accused of murdering her brother turns to an ancient vampire to bring him back, and Anything for Jackson, which sees an elderly couple kidnap a young pregnant woman to fuse the spirit of their dead grandson with the unborn child.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has inspired young creators to become more daring and to look for stories that are more relatable on a personal level as a response to global crisis, said one of the guest instructors of the Golden Horse Fpp workshop.
Yeh Jufeng, chief executive producer of Mandarin Vision, said Fpp has been showcasing a great variety of Chinese language projects from all over the world over the years, but because of the pandemic, projects taking part in Fpp this year came mainly from Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong only. However, these creators have demonstrated their passion for filmmaking through their projects, she said. This is the fifth time for the veteran filmmaker to be a guest instructor at the Fpp workshop.

Local stories will play an increasingly important role amid the accelerating globalization and exponential growth in Ott platforms, says Aileen Li, winning producer at the Golden Horse Film Project Promotion.
“There have been lots of talks about co-production in the past, but I feel that local stories will take on a leading role. Characteristics of local culture have become more distinctive amid globalization. And if you seize the right topic that resonates with the local audience, foreign audiences will be interested,” the Taiwan-based Li told Variety.
Li’s latest project “SARStorm” won the $35,000 (Nt$1 million) grand prize at the Golden Horse Fpp on Wednesday. The project, on which Li serves as executive producer and co-director with Lin Chun-yang, also won the Catchplay Development Award and the Central Picture Corporation Award, making it the biggest winner of this year’s Fpp. “We didn’t expect this. We are very excited,” she said.

Taiwan’s Mandarin Vision has been involved in film development, production and distribution since 2012, with the ambition of creating a solid platform for Mandarin-language directors, producers and investors.
Its international sales operation, launched in 2016, has become a go-to destination for good quality, independent film, with recent titles including “A Sun,” “Detention,” “The Great Buddha+” and “My Missing Valentine,” which is a contender at the Golden Horse Film Festival.
Taiwan’s response to the coronavirus has been so successful that the island’s cinemas have been able to stay open throughout, and production has continued.
Desmond Yang, Mandarin Vision’s director of international sales, explains the nuances of running a busy sales operation at a time when the business is supposed to be struggling.

Taiwan's White Terror was among the longest periods of a nation under martial law in modern history. From 1947 to 1987, the country was at the mercy of a government fearful of its own people. Dissenters were tortured, imprisoned, and much worse for even the slightest perceived transgressions against the state. In the decades since the orders were lifted, the story has been told numerous times, but one of the most popular versions came in the form of a video game, Detention, created by Red Candle Games, which has now been adapted into a terrifying feature film directed by newcomer, John Hsu. Detention takes place on the campus of the Greenwood School, where students follow rigid daily schedules and procedures prescribed by their government watchers....

The 19th edition of the Lincoln Center’s New York Asian Film Festival will be virtual this year, and will go from August 28 to September 12, 2020. This year’s focus is on women filmmakers, under the title “Women Transforming Film.” In this year’s line-up, Nyaff spotlights titles directed and led by women — including “Heavy Craving”, “Lucky Chan-sil”, “Kim Ji-young, Born 1982,”, “My Prince Edward”, and “Victim(s)”.
A generous share of the program is devoted to new filmmakers, including striking directorial debuts and sophomore efforts. This edition reflects today’s particularly kinetic innovations, much informed by social media and the hyper information highway. An impressive cross-section of work highlights new ideas in storytelling and tackles social mores and personal demons, including “John Denver Trending”, “Beauty Water”, “Detention”, and “IWeirDo”, to name a few. Adapting a video game to cinema has always been a tricky business, with the majority of efforts having failed to produce desired results, despite the usually big budgets allocated to such efforts. The problem usually is the writing of the video games, with the stories rarely having the quality of movie scripts. Here, however, that is not the case, since the script of the Taiwanese game “Detention” is quite layered and well written, resulting in a film that is truly intriguing, to say the least.

While mainland China’s Golden Rooster Awards crowed on social media about the star power of its attendees, the more modest Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan had to make do this year with a red carpet full of relative unknowns and sponsors that had fled the coop. Inside the auditorium in Taipei, however, the Golden Horse prizewinners and others in attendance were able to say things that those at the Golden Roosters would never have dared.
The contrast between the competing awards events offered a case study of the complex price of artistic freedom in the world of Chinese film and politics. Indeed, the two events clashed on Saturday evening in the first place because of a pro-Taiwanese independence acceptance speech at the Golden Horses last year. Taiwanese films “A Sun” and “Detention” were the big winners of Taipei’s Golden Horse Awards on Saturday. Wang Xiaoshuai’s “So Long, My Son” was the standout title at mainland China’s rival Golden Rooster Awards, held the same evening.
The two events collided because of a pro-Taiwanese independence acceptance speech at last year’s Golden Horse Awards, which are usually considered the most prestigious film prizes in Chinese-language film. That prompted Beijing to ban mainland industry players from attending this year’s ceremony in Taiwan, threaten to cut off access to China’s enormous movie market for any others who chose to participate, and schedule its Golden Rooster ceremony for the same evening.

It’s finally time for the prestigious Taiwanese Award Ceremony “Golden Horse Awards” (23rd November 2019) and this is year the event is heavily influenced by the the snowballing effect of director Fu Yue’s cry for independence during her acceptance speech for the documentary “Our Youth In Taiwan” at last year’s edition. The statement caused a stir, ended with China boycotting the Golden Horse and Hong Kong directors being advised to stay away.
On the other hand, China’s Golden Rooster Awards has just opened and announced that from now on it will be held permanently in Xiamen and annually, instead of every two years. Therefore the two events will happened almost at the same time.
The “Golden Horse Awards” lineup is consequently “different” this year and – to stay positive – Taiwanese film-makers will have a greater chance to showcase their work and be awarded.

For many moviegoers, only one film released in 2017 successfully confronted racial inequality under the guise of mainstream entertainment, and that was “Get Out.” But another movie that fell into that same category has yet to hit theaters. Joseph Kahn’s “Bodied,” an outrageous hip hop satire that screened in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival, has yet to land a theatrical deal; nevertheless, it topped IndieWire’s annual critics poll as the best undistributed movie of 2017.
The riotous comedy, in which geeky, overeducated white grad student Adam (Calum Worthy) permeates Toronto’s underground rap battle scene, is a blatant provocation: A big part of the movie revolves around Adam’s realization that racial epithets and other seemingly offensive aspects of rap performance are key to his own success in the scene, and that participants regard such button-pushing lyrics as less problematic than his socially-progressive background had led him to believe.
