- When a stick-up at the local bookie's has the underworld out for blood, a pair of lifelong friends meet in a seedy hotel room to hide from their hunters and to gauge each other's guilt and loyalty. But when love and friendship are tested, will either survive a NIGHT AT THE NEPTUNE?—Matt Sorvillo
- A low rent hood named BOBBY receives a panicked phone message from an old friend summoning him to a room in a seedy hotel. When he arrives, NICKY is drunk, paranoid, and waving a gun. He's holed up in the room hiding from the local underworld, BIG PETER & VINNY V., and reveals that someone held up a neighborhood bookie. The streets aren't safe, and Big Peter's corner boys are looking for blood. Bobby doesn't understand why Nicky thinks they're after him. But Nicky explains that their mutual childhood friend, PAULY PLOTZ, was an inside man during the robbery, and had buzzed the gunman in. Vinny V. tortured Pauly to give up his accomplice, but Pauly wouldn't drop a dime. He took his secrets to a watery grave and was fished from the bay with his head encased in a concrete block. The thinking goes, nobody would endure all that punishment without giving up their partner's identity. Not unless they really cared about them. But Pauly Plotz had grown into a loser who lacked personal ties. All he had was a childhood bond with Bobby & Nicky. Through a series of brief, often violent, sometimes poignant, exchanges, the two old friends test each other's stories. Both trying to gauge the other's guilt or loyalty. Nicky begins to suspect that Bobby was the culprit, and Bobby comes to realize that anyone who suddenly skips town is going to look guilty to their hunters. He hands Nicky a big wad of dough and tells him to get out of dodge. Nicky is confused about where the money came from, but proposes they split town together. It could be like a return to their childhood, almost like summer camp. Bobby placates Nicky, as he helps his drunken friend to bed, and suggests an escape plan for Nicky to follow in the morning, alone. Nicky apologizes to Bobby, and says he'll miss him. Then Bobby steals Nicky's gun and turns out the light on his way out of the room. On the corner, Bobby finds one of Big Peter's boys and asks if there's a reward for the guy who pulled the bookie job. He leads the goon up to Nicky's room but when he opens the door, he's surprised to find Nicky sitting with Big Peter and Vinny V. Nicky had given Bobby every chance to come clean and escape. Instead, Nicky collects his reward and quickly rushes from the room despite the cries for help from his onetime friend.
