Although Simon's radio play is obviously a fictional story, it is full of historical errors. It's supposed to be set in 1469, during the Hook and Cod Wars (1350-1490) but contains historical figures who were already dead by then: Jacqueline, countess of Hainaut died in 1436, while Witte van Haemstede died in 1321, 29 years before the Hook and Cod Wars. Jan van Schaffelaar's activities in 1469 are unknown, but as a commander for David of Burgundy, he fought on the side of the Cods, while Simon's play mentions him as commander of the Hooks.
