It's no secret that the South Korean TV industry is conquering the world step by step. But there's no wonder why K-dramas are so popular. Showrunners have put a lot of thought and effort into creating a series of different genres that can be enjoyed by different audiences.
However, not only shows are getting more and more attention, but also full-length movies. Especially after the huge success of the movie Parasite. The 99%-rated movie even won the Oscar for Best Picture.
So here are some more movies you should definitely check out if you liked Bong Joon-ho's masterpiece.
1. Love and Leashes (2022)
Rotten Tomatoes: 89%
There are some topics that are not often explored in movies, and Bdsm is one of them, although it has become a bit more common in recent years. Well, Love and Lashes is actually a romantic comedy that explores the kink in the sweetest and absolutely not cringeworthy way.

“The Asia Pacific video industry continues to experience a secular shift from TV to online in terms of engagement and monetization,” highlighted a report released by research and analysis company Media Partners Asia Research Services (MPA) on Wednesday. Among the key data points, the firm estimated that the video industry in the region grew by 5.5 percent in 2023 to hit $145 billion in revenue, driven by a 13 percent jump in “online video sector sales to $57 billion, partially offset by less than 1 percent growth in the TV revenue pie to $98 billion.”
The report analyzed free-to-air TV, pay TV, subscription VOD, premium advertising VOD and user-generated content (Ugc)/social video advertising in 14 Asia Pacific markets.
“China remains the largest and most regulated video market, generating $64 billion in revenue in 2023,” it found. “Ex-China, the largest markets in 2023 are Japan ($32 billion), India ($13 billion), Korea ($12 billion) and Australia ($9.5 billion) followed by Taiwan and Indonesia, both at around $3 billion.

As we have mentioned many times before, the most successful product of Asian cinema towards the US market (apart from anime) are the action/martial arts movies, and as such, it is by no surprise that the biggest industries of the continent and particularly S.Korea have invested heavily towards the particular category, with China following close by, in a genre that, most of the time, budget is the most crucial element. In that fashion, ultra violent and stylistic is the path S. Korea productions follow (this year), while China seems to be going more towards the sci-fi now that the Ip Man franchise has become somewhat preterit. Japan choose live-action adaptation or its rather famous franchises, while the duo of Tak Sakaguchi and Yudai Yamaguchi continue their effort to produce as realistic martial arts scenes as possible. China follows the stylistic martial arts approach, while India has come up...

"Where is that bastard?" Netflix has released this Korean action film streaming already. Ballerina is the latest film made by Korean filmmaker Chung-Hyun Lee. It premiered at the Busan Film Fest and launched for streaming on October 6th this fall. "Cold-hearted and cruel, the hell of merciless revenge begins now, for my one and only." Grieving the loss of a best friend she couldn't protect, an ex-bodyguard sets out to fulfill her dear friend's last wish: sweet revenge. Jang Ok-ju is a former bodyguard who sets out to hunt down a sex trafficking ring headed by Choi Pro. Starring Jeon Jong-seo as Jang Ok-ju, with Kim Ji-hoon, Park Yu-rim, Shin Se-hwi, plus Kim Mu-yeol, Jang Yoon-ju, Kim Young-ok, and Joo Hyun. This reminds me of Kill Boksoon, another female-driven action film quietly dropped on Netflix earlier this year. Also not to be confused with the John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas...

When you look at Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night, there is an illusion it creates that is undeniably petrifying and sensational at the same time. Watching Lost in the Stars somehow feels the same way. Behind many facades, there is a story of heart that unravels in the most neo-noir kind of form, reminiscent of old Hong Kong thrillers married with the presentation of new Asian action cinema. Released originally in 2022, Lost in the Stars comes to Netflix almost a whole year later with a bang. The 2-hour film is nail-biting from start to finish, and if you’re someone who likes the twisted tales of Park Chan-Wook-style thrillers, there is a lot to enjoy here. I don’t mean to be all praise for the film; there are some minute flaws, but the viewing experience is exactly what is expected from it.

Netflix’s new Korean action drama is sure to grow in popularity with everybody’s favorite heartthrob, Woo Do-Hwan, being present among the show’s massive cast. It’s already apparent that action-packed revenge dramas are a big hit in the Hallyu industry, as we saw with the other mini-series, My Name, starring Han So-Hee. Unsurprisingly, the series is based on a webtoon by the same name that takes us back to the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic, where two rookie boxers befriend each other and get tangled up in a mighty battle with arguably Korea’s most notorious loan shark company. The bromance is impeccable, of course, and the rookie boxers who are pitted against each other in the rink become brothers outside it. It’s an interesting duo of misfits who have no similarities except that they’ve both returned from serving as Marines in the Army— A...

Netflix is doubling down on Korean content after achieving global impact with viral series like Squid Game, The Glory and Physical: 100.
The streamer said Monday, in a statement targeted to the local Korean press, that it will spend $2.5 billion in South Korea over the next four years to produce Korean TV series, movies and unscripted shows. The hefty investment would represent twice what Netflix has spent in Korea between its local launch in 2016 and today, according to the company.
The investment plans were first shared during a meeting between South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos in Washington,D.C., where Yoon arrived Monday for a state visit.
“We were able to make this decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said Sarandos. “I have no doubt our investment will strengthen our long-term partnership with Korea and Korea’s creative ecosystem,...

Leading indie sales agent Finecut has picked up international rights to “In Our Day” by idiosyncratic South Korean director Hong Sang-soo. The film is set as the closing title of the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar of the Cannes festival.
Hong, who works on low budgets, controls much of the production process and makes repeated use of a small pool of actors, is one of the most prolific feature directors in the world. This is already his second feature this year. His earlier, “In Water” played in the Encounters section at Berlin in February
His films are known for their minimalist style, a focus on female characters, serial chance encounters and oblique references to the media industry. On paper, “In Our Day” fits exactly in that groove.
Finecut pitches the synopsis as: “A woman in her early 40s, is temporarily living at the home of a friend, who is raising a cat.

Netflix always seems to know when it has a potential hit. Netflix has released its Top 10 for the week of March 27, and it was little to no surprise that Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston‘s comedy sequel “Murder Mystery 2” entered the English language films chart in first place. After all, the original 2019 movie was such a huge hit for Netflix.
The action-comedy sequel entered the charts with 64.4 million hours viewed, the second-biggest launch for a comedy film with 42 million views, appearing in the Top 10 in 91 countries with it being the #1 movie in more than 60 of those countries.
Right behind it was the original “Murder Mystery” with 24.7 million hours viewed globally, and the previous #1 movie “Luther: The Fallen Sun” with 12.7 million viewing hours. The lack of strong family films in theaters allowed four animated films to get into the Top 10 with Netflix’s “The Magician’s Elephant” leading the pack with 6.3 million viewing hours.

Two major hits debuted for home viewing this week, with very different gaps between their theatrical releases and PVOD availability. “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney), which appeared after 100 days and $680 million in domestic gross, is currently #1 everywhere. “Creed III” (MGM) arrived after only 28 days to place #2, also on all charts. “The Way of Water” is available to buy for $19.99, while “Creed III” can only be rented for 48 hours.
Also debuting is “Champions”, consistent with the company’s usual post-third weekend release. It made two lists, as high as #4 at Vudu. Vudu also has the latest DC Comics home video original “Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham” (Warner Bros. Discovery) at #9 for $14.99.
Two films that made all three lists are now available at $5.99 with “A Man Called Otto” (Sony) and “Puss in Boots: The Last Exit” (Universal). “Cocaine Bear” (Universal), still at $19.99, also made all three and charted as high as #3 at Vudu.

After “Believer,” Lee Hae-young returns with a patriotic historical film about Korea's liberation movement in the 1930s. A spin-off of some sort to “The Age of Shadows”, the director mixes his inspirations between film noir, action flick, and “The Handmaiden” through its combative lesbian heroines.

It’s only March, and the action in 2023 has already been amplified to level 100. Marvel has been dominating the genre for the latter half of the last decade, but recently a lot of new players have entered the game with new franchises, top-quality choreography, and interesting storylines that have driven audiences to theaters. Of course, the best example is the “John Wick” franchise, which has surpassed expectations and brought a new generation delight for hand-to-hand combat and bulletproof tailor-made couture suits. In the last three months alone, we have seen large-scale action movies from Bollywood (Pathaan), Vietnam (Furies), Hollywood with chapter 4 of the aforementioned John Wick, and now South Korea has joined with the highly anticipated “Kill Boksoon.” Notably, this one comes closest to “John Wick” in style, plot, and even the couture suits (which are a perfect reason to watch this film). As a fan of Hallyu entertainment, I...

Kill Bok-soon (キル・ボクスン) is a South Korean film directed by Byun Sung-hyun starring Jeon Do-yeon and Sol Kyung-gu.
Funny from the start, with its hilarious one-liners and stylish main character, but the movie wins us over in the action scenes, shot with a lot of punch in a movie that definitely knows when to strike.
Kill Bok-soon (2023) Movie Review Kill Bok-soon (2023)
Funny, ironic and, with all its brutal violence, highly entertaining and destined to stand out on account of its funny, intelligent irony and for its many moral lessons:
-Drinking may be fun, but smoking is not.
After that, the good mother devotes herself to murdering people, while at the same time, combining that activity with meetings with the mothers of students.
Very good on the aesthetic level, very curated in the photography, it knows how to maintain the pace of the story through the elaborate editing, particularly in the special scenes,...

Director Byun Sung-hyun was baffled when he first learned that his feature film Kill Boksoon would be invited to the Berlin International Film Festival last month.

As we all know, there’s terrible pressure on the modern hitwoman to have it all: a head-of-the-table position at a prestigious assassin firm, a hunky younger lover, a rogues’ gallery of colorful assassin friends to slurp noodles with, a home greenhouse, a snappy wardrobe and a healthy relationship with a teenage daughter who is hesitantly coming out as gay. Writer-director Byun Sung-hyun probes these highly relatable issues with giddy verve, if not exactly originality. Netflix’s “Kill Boksoon,” which could be the Korean little sister to the “John Wick” franchise cross-fused with “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” is silly, splashy, CG-assisted nonsense — and at 2 hours 17 minutes, way too long. But it has flashes of surprising charm for a film whose philosophy runs no deeper than “You should have led a better life if you wanted to die of natural causes.”

"Killing is simple compared to raising a kid." Netflix has debuted one final trailer for the Korean assassin action thriller Kill Boksoon, out for streaming on Netflix worldwide at the end of March. The film recently premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. A single mother who is a renowned hired killer finds it difficult to achieve a balance between her personal and work life. Jeon Do-yeon stars as Gil Boksoon in this action thriller from director Sung-hyun Byun. At work, she's a renowned assassin. At home, she's a single mom to a teenage daughter. Killing? That's easy. It's parenting that's the hard part. As she tries to find her way out of the company, she ends up confronting more assassins. The cast includes Sul Kyung-gu, Kim Si-a, Esom, & Koo Kyo-hwan. I caught this already during the festival - it's solid but isn't so clean, with a rather drawn out runtime.

„Kill Boksoon” opens with a tongue-in-cheek scene – a yakuza goon wakes up on a street wearing only underwear. He is about to be executed by the protagonist, Gil Boksoon (Jeon Do-yeon) a female gun for hire from South Korea. He is given a last chance to fight for his life, and duel with her. He gets a katana, she wields a hatchet. The odds are against her, the disproportionate strength works to the advantage of the Japanese. In a move being a clear riff on the famous scene from “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, she whips out a gun and quickly dispatches her foe. After establishing the ironic, over-the-top tone, the director does little to maintain it after. What follows is a fight- and slow-mo-ridden slog.

Whether it’s overcoming a mental handicap or fighting for their rights, Korea’s women-led stories are evolving as the local industry kicks some of its dated stereotypes for female characters.
Recent shows “The Glory,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” “Little Women” and “Twenty-Five, Twenty-One” not only delve into social issues in Korea, but highlight the strength and depth of character of their female leads.
Three of these were top-10 shows for Netflix in 2022, while data from FlixPatrol shows revenge thriller “The Glory” as the number one TV show on the streamer this year in South Korea, as of Feb. 24.
While Korea’s rigidly hierarchical society and history has traditionally put women at the bottom of society, that same rigidity moulded strong, creative women who overcame hardship and prejudice. Finally, these traits are being reflected in content hitting the small screen.

Netflix will splash the cash in the Apac region this year, boosting content investment by 15% as revenues grow by 12%, according to a report from Media Partners Asia (MPA).
The forecast content spend of $1.9B will comprise almost half of the streamer’s predicted $4B revenues in the region. Last year, content spend grew by 9%, the report said.
More spend in Japan and Korea will drive the boost, while India and Indonesia remain the highest-growing markets in Apac, according to MPA, which also cited the rollout of the advertising tier to Australia and “increased contributions” from Thailand and the Philippines as making a difference to revenues in 2023.
“The ad tier has seen a slow start in the three Apac markets and Australia is expected to see greater momentum through 2023, helping boost subscribers and revenues in a market where churn has been increasing,” said MPA Executive Director Vivek Couto.
