Provocative, rebellious, a genius and an undeniable force on the American literary landscape, Norman Mailer was an author, social commentator, filmmaker and a personality whose outsized figure nearly eclipsed his two Pulitzer prizes. He had enough experiences and adventures for three lifetimes, and trying to capture him in a documentary and uncover what made him tick is a monumental task. Last night I attended a special screening of Joseph Mantegna's Norman Mailer: The American, part of the Film Society of Lincoln Center's bi-monthly Independents Night series, which presents NYC premieres of new American documentaries. And my main take-away with the experience was: what an antithesis of the audience for a Justin Bieber documentary!
Yes, leave it to me to compare Justin Bieber: Never Say Never with Norman Mailer: The American, but the latter is the first doc I've seen theatrically since the former and I just couldn't help thinking about them together. For instance, Never Say Never is about a kid who hasn't really lived much yet and his biographical concert film is more broadly about the zeitgeist of the last couple years. Meanwhile, the Mailer film is about a man who lived a very long and very full life, and his bio ends up more broadly being about...

On September 22, 2010, the Boston Film Festival premiered the documentary Norman Mailer: The American directed by Joseph Mantegna. I was eager to see this film as two years ago I had been interviewed for it by the director. With a girlfriend, I drove from Philadelphia to Boston to arrive just in time for the premiere. Mailer devotees were out in droves, though the Mailer family was absent, having been afforded the opportunity to view the documentary in the privacy of their homes. Biographer Mary Dearborn, author of Mailer, offered keen observations as a narrator. Mailer's first wife was Bea Silverman (1944-52) who has a daughter, Susie, whom Norman always wanted me to meet. She is a psychologist and he felt she and I could relate to one another. Bea and Susie live in South American. Mailer's third...
