good attempt, good reslult
jay-195605 February 2022
An attempt by a young director to describe the love and life of a group of middle-class people in Shanghai, China. The rhythm of the story is slow and delicate, no lack of humor and wisdom, maybe it has something to do with my current mood, I enjoyed it very much.

Started off hit and miss, ended up quite powerful
gulihere27 April 2022
I really loved this film for its refreshing perspective of modern Shanghai; cosmopolitan and not steeping in nationalism however unmistakably Chinese in its character. The characters themselves are varied and charming and there are a few stories at play here.

It was actually the side character of Lao Wu who made the film for me and while I would have liked to see his story explored more, I think it was prevalent that it wasn't and supported the overall theme of the main characters story.

Definately worth watching for people who are interested in China stuff, and still worth watching if you like a good romcom!

A rare Shanghai dialect movie
hooraychining3 April 2022
It's been a long time since I saw a movie with all the lines in Shanghainese. The film is full of Shanghai's unique style and human touch, but also cleverly embedded in the director's own wisdom and humor. I felt very comfortable listening to the Shanghai dialect in the movie, watching the streets of the plane trees and enjoying the whole story. All were so appropriate. I think this shows that films need to be diversified. China's films should not be full of northern-style narratives and language styles. Too much will make us tired.

At present, it seems that Beijing is too dominant in popular culture, and there are too many styles of north, including the northeast in China's movie and TV series.

The good news is that there is a chance to counter the northern power, in addition to Shanghai, the southern style film production is Guangdong. For example, I Am What I Am (aka Xiongshi Shaonian). The images and scenes presented in the story are full of Lingnan style (the area near Foshan, Guangdong Province, the hometown of Yip Man). Unique, fresh and full of tradition .

It's typical
MSCultureSH1 February 2022
It's typical for Shanghainese, the reflect of people, the word they use, the status of their lives...everything Just very funny when you see someone just like you and your own friends, and what they're experiencing is just what you will do. You see this movie with friends and just cant stop laughing all the time, and you or your friend get the point at the same time... Cant stop talking about the movie, it's not only a movie, it's a topic or just a phonomenom you keep talking talking talking until every friend have seen it and have talked about it(you know what, not only friends, elder women and men like it very much, also brothers and sisters...) ya.

Myth of Love
jackson_ro26 January 2022
A one-of-a-kind artsy film that is completely in my dialect. It is a great representation of the city that I love, and how it is such a melting-pot. It's art style pays homage to so many classics from the best and is able to represent Shanghai and all the changes that comes with it. All the characters are well-sculpted, each with their own personality and history, but is easy to instantly grapple on if you live in this city. Perhaps a little surprising that the movie is made, but I am so glad it is.

A Mediocre Movie-Myth of Love
caohong_9911 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A mediocre movie.

It had neither myth, nor love; instead, it was filled with petty citizens' vulgarity in language and in action. Many details were either missing or not reasonable: first of all, the so-called love story between Old Bai and divorcee Miss Li was very vague: how did they know each other? How did they suddenly sleep together at the beginning of the movie? Through entire movie, the chemistry between them was missing. Secondly, as a modern and chic woman with a career, Miss Li chose to live with her very annoying and bad-mouth mother in a tiny and broken-down apartment, it was unbelievable. If her choice of staying with her mother was already very unreasonable, when Old Bai offered her a room in his elegant townhouse, she hesitated and refused, which was even more unthinkable and unbelievable. In addition, all the characters in this film were all unlikable, they were all very similar, very predictable. Lao Bai supposed to be a painter, art lover/art teacher and real estate owner, but this character lacked this artistic quality, his dialogues and actions were just like any average fat and oily middle-age man with zero charisma and enthusiasm. Nothing was make-sense to me in this movie. I thought, people who were crazy about this movie were not after the stories' depth, nor character development, nor diversity of a metropolitan. But simply for love for the city and love for local Shanghainese dialect used throughout the film.
