A red stapler can be seen on the desk of Judge Reardon (Stephen Root), a seemingly obvious nod to Root's Milton Waddams character in Office Space (1999), whose prized red stapler was a point of contention.

Al Capone had his headquarters at the Lexington Hotel in Chicago. When undergoing renovations in the 1980s, a series of underground walled-off chambers were found. Geraldo Rivera hosted a live TV special in 1986 showing the excavation of the chambers. It was speculated that they would be filled with money and/or bodies. They turned out to be filled with nothing but dirt. Rivera finally admitted defeated in front of 30 million viewers, the highest rated program of its type.
