Well, it’s coming down to the nitty gritty now. The Screen Actors Guild Awards are happening this Sunday, followed two weeks later by the Academy Awards. Soon enough, we’ll know if Brendan Fraser (for “The Whale”) or Austin Butler (for “Elvis”) is The Chosen One, circa 2023. It’s also possible it will be neither of these guys, but come on. Colin Farrell couldn’t even win the lead actor prize at BAFTA – upset by Butler – and if an Irishman can’t beat a kid from Anaheim, California in London, he probably ain’t going to pull it off at the Dolby Theatre.
It’s also true, however, that the two-man race had started to look like a look like a one-man coronation lately. The perception was that “The Whale” campaign was running low on steam, and it was potentially impacting its star’s chances – particularly at the SAGs.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was predicated on the idea of the cute blonde who usually dies at the beginning of horror movies finally having the power to fight back. She may have looked like just another flaxen-haired damsel in distress, but Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) didn't run from the demons in the alley: she annihilated them. In a narrative most commonly reserved for men, Buffy is the one girl in all the world who is capable of saving it.
I remember discovering "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and falling in love with a TV show for the very first time. It wasn't just about the clever dialogue, monstrous metaphors or unforgettable characters. One of the things that resonated with me the most was that the hero of "Buffy" was a teenage girl, just like me. Sure, she had to bear the weight of her unenviable destiny, but she also had to survive high school.

The easiest way to describe the tone of Satoshi Miki’s realization of an objectively ingenious concept (What happens to the rotting carcass of a defeated kaiju?), is to mention the question to which every journalist demands an answer after a blister filled with the gaseous byproduct of the monster’s decomposition bursts: Does it smell like poo or puke? If that sounds like your idea of a good time for two hours, Daikaijū no Atoshimatsu [What to do with the Dead Kaiju?] is for you. If it doesn’t, however, the film will feel more like a different scene occurring much later, one where a character electronically leaks a classified photo and text file. Rather than an instantaneous transfer, we must literally watch the progress bar slowly fill to completion.
That’s how most films in this vein feel to me, though: the whole lowest common denominator comedic send-up of a usually earnestly dramatic genre piece a la Scary Movie.

Few things blend more perfectly than an afternoon spent poolside, free-flowing mezcal, and the warmth of Blxst’s nostalgic, R&b-tinged production. On April 16, the Los Angeles native proved as much when he hit the Creator House stage to deliver a string of hits from his critically acclaimed quarantine care package, No Love Lost.
Once the mellow guitar strums of “Wrong or Right” enveloped the Arrive hotel pool deck, the audience inched closer and closer to the stage. For those who knew Blxst before the Meta-sponsored day party, it was...

“I ain’t heard one bad Blxst song,” the California-native proclaims on his song “Pressure” — a statement that feels more like fact than hyperbole. The rapper/singer/producer (whose name is pronounced “blast”) has been stacking up hits since he combined his production skills and pen game. Hailing from the streets of Los Angeles, Blxst is set to heat up Indio when he hits the stage at Rolling Stone and Meta’s Creator House during the first weekend of Coachella.

While we may have spent the past two years disappointed by Coachella’s mandated hiatus, event organizers have been gearing up for its reintroduction. With a stacked lineup and stellar activations in store for the festival’s comeback, all signs point to this year’s iteration as its best yet and Rolling Stone’s presence will be no exception.

Halfway through the pilot of “Astrid and Lilly Save the World,” best friends Astrid (Jana Morrison) and Lilly (Samanatha Aucoin) stare down a mysterious stranger (Oliver Renaud) with awe and suspicion. “I’m your guide,” he insists. When they continue to just blink back at him, he sighs and clarifies that he’s their “Giles,” knowing that, if nothing else, these proudly nerdy teens will probably get such a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reference. And if the main inspiration for “Astrid & Lilly Save the World” weren’t clear enough before, all it takes is a glance at its first monster of the week, which might not be a vampire, but nevertheless has exactly the same kind of grooved prosthetic face as those that stalked Buffy and her Scooby gang over 20 years ago.
The difference is, neither Astrid nor Lilly are the peppy Valley Girl that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy was.
