"What if the person that abducted me is me?" Apple TV has unveiled the first official trailer for their next new sci-fi series titled Dark Matter, adapted from the acclaimed book of the same name by Blake Crouch. Crouch (who also created the series "Good Behavior") is adapting and showrunning this new series, which is about a physicist who is kidnapped and sent to a parallel universe where another version of his life unfolds because of a different choice he made years previously. The story draws on the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics which posits that every possible outcome of every decision creates a new universe or world that runs parallel to our own. Joel Edgerton stars as a man abducted into an alternate version of his life. Amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could've lived, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family...

In the span of less than a decade, Denis Villeneuve has managed to ascend the ranks of recognizable, name-brand writer/directors to become one of the most reliable, challenging, and consistent visionary filmmakers around ... but it's safe to say he wouldn't have made it this far if it weren't for a much lesser-known thriller that helped put him on the map. 2013's "Enemy," based on José Saramago's novel "The Double," has incited all sorts of fascinating discussions and analysis across film circles, mostly for its utterly confounding imagery, difficult and disturbing themes, and perhaps one of the most terrifying and controversial final shots of any movie made this century. Viewers who've seen "Enemy" for the first time typically come away with strong opinions about the very last scene, which we'll get to in a moment, but every second preceding that chilling conclusion demands just as much attention and focus.

The Dualists: Cronenberg Doubles Down on Class Cliches
“Sorrow is concealed in gilded places, and there’s no escaping it,” wrote Fyodor Dostoevsky in his 1846 novella The Double, a classic template of doppelgänger literature where the confrontation of one’s mirror self conjures an eternal agony often obfuscated through our self-imposed facades. Such is one of the meager subtexts simmering beneath the morbid surface of Brandon Cronenberg’s third film, Infinity Pool, an odyssey into the troubling possibility of murder tourism lodged in Twilight Zone parameters regarding globalization and international flavored elitism.
More interested in identity politics than the significant predilection of body horror which defined his father David Cronenberg’s early works, there are profoundly absorbing ideas eventually reduced by a meandering repetitiveness by the time the narrative descends into a tepid resolution close to the two hour mark.…...

There’s a long and varied history of actors playing multiple roles in the same film: from Jesse Eisenberg’s dueling office workers in the Kafka-esque “The Double,” to Jake Gyllenhaal’s washed-out doppelgängers in “Enemy,” to Jeremy Irons’ twin gynecologists in “Dead Ringers.” (Michael Keaton even tried his hand at playing four characters—one man, three clones—in Harold Ramis’ 1996 comedy “Multiplicity.

Though production is apparently already underway on Nima Nourizadeh’s next film – American Ultra – the cast is still being expanded, with the latest addition being Connie Britton.
The actress – who garnered numerous awards nominations for her performances in Nashville and American Horror Story – joins Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in this action-comedy, scripted by Max Landis (Chronicle). In the film, an aimless, small-town stoner (Eisenberg) is suddenly revealed to be a talented sleeper agent for a covert Government program, and must go on the run with his girlfriend (Stewart) when operatives are tasked with ‘cleaning house’, as the program is discontinued.
Connie Britton will play the creator of the program, in a role that was previously rumoured to have been circled by Uma Thurman. While she is best known for her work on the small-screen, this role will be her biggest, most high profile foray into movies yet.

More news about projects being sold at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival. This one is a film titled Time Out of Mind, a rather intriguing title for a film that I wish was sci-fi, but alas is just a drama. Set to be directed by Oren Moverman (of The Messenger and Rampart, both with Woody Harrelson, previously) the film will star Richard Gere, who has been getting into more roles recently including The Double, Arbitrage, Movie 43, Henry & Me and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2. Qed is selling the international rights in Berlin, with Wme handling them in the Us, meaning they're looking to get this thing ready to film. Quoted commenting on the project, Richard Gere states: "Time Out of Mind has obsessed me for many years now. It is a profoundly human story that we are determined to make into a powerful film that speaks to everyone.

After nine days in Toronto for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, I finally arrived home in Seattle late in the evening on Friday, September 13, and have been trying to catch up ever since. I still have one review to write for Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, but managed to post 26 reviews from the festival and just below is a recap of all 26 with my teaser for each review, the grade and a few words to sort of put a capper on the festival as we now move full steam ahead into Oscar season. Speaking of Oscar season, following this recap I'm going to be going straight into work on updating my Oscar predictions. There is a lot of moving and shuffling that needs to be done after not only the Toronto, but Telluride and Venice Film Festivals and with the New York Film Festival right around the corner. Exciting times folks.

Obviously I'm in Toronto and what I'm seeing you can track right here, but for those that don't want to click the link so far I've seen Don Jon, Blue is the Warmest Color, The Fifth Estate, The Invisible Woman, Tom at the Farm, Prisoners ,Parkland, The Railway Man, Dallas Buyers Club and Gravity. I've been able to review several of them already and plenty more reviews are on the way with Prisoners and Dallas Buyers Club reviews coming later today... depending on when you're reading this. As for what I'm watching today, that would be The Double, Can a Song Save Your Lifec, Philomena and Dom Hemingway in my only day here in Toronto with five movies and finding time to write all the reviews has become the hardest part. Luckily, things will begin to free up a little next week and hopefully I'll be caught up sooner rather than later.

Surprisingly, or not so surprising, depending on how much you've been reading my day-to-day Toronto-related posts, my schedule for this year's 2013 Toronto Film Festival has changed quite a bit since I posted that preliminary schedule about two weeks ago. For starters, The Fifth Estate will no longer be my first screening of the fest as I hear it's not yet completed with some temp music still in place at this time, but they're hoping to have it completed and ready in the 9:30 Pm slot on the opening day. Either way, it will still play, but there just might be a disclaimer before it does. I must admit, they push these things to the wire, but thankfully it's nothing to do with the editing, just some last minute touches. The great thing about the change means I now get to see Don Jon, which I otherwise would have had to miss.

The 2013 Toronto Film Festival Press and Industry schedule was just released and after a quick look I think I have my nine days on the ground mapped out. There were a lot of conflicts, some of which are forcing me to see the second screening of films such as Labor Day, Gravity and 12 Years a Slave, but as of right now it looks like it will be a 25 film festival for me, beginning tiwth The Fifth Estate and ending with Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises. The only films I couldn't really fit into the schedule were Xavier Dolan's Tom at the Farm, which conflicts with Rush and The Railway Man, which conflicts with the only screening of Parkland and if I was to see it the second time it shows it would mean missing both Joe and Under the Skin. Of course, this year I may try and...

With each passing year, Tiff is becoming more and more prominent on the film festival circuit, with more and more Oscar-primed films making their debut out in Canada. And with the initial line-up announced for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the trend is definitely continuing.

Briefly: One more interesting choice for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar project, finishing up its casting before shooting later this year. Deadline is reporting that Topher Grace will take an unspecified role in the sci-fi movie. Grace was last seen in Predators, The Double, The Big Wedding and The Giant Mechanical Man and recently finished shooting The Calling and A Many Splintered Thing, but hasn't been in too much otherwise. The cast for Interstellar already includes quite a few fantastic actors: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck and Michael Caine. The script was originally written by Jonathan Nolan, updated by Christopher Nolan and will "depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding." Cannot wait for this one. Launching November 2014.

Imagine if in The Usual Suspects, that great twist that nobody saw coming regarding the identity of Keyser Soze, the criminal genius pulling the strings was revealed twenty minutes into the film. Maybe if this had been the case we wouldn’t know any differently and the film would still be hailed as one of the best films of the 90s or maybe the plot would have still unfolded with us watching the characters bumble around whilst we knew more than them and it would have been a pretty generic action thriller.
This is the fatal flaw with The Double, the directorial debut of screenwriter Michael Brandt, which plays its hand far too early and could have been something special.
The plot concerns retired CIA veteran Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) being coaxed out of retirement by ‘the company’ when young FBI Profiler Ben Geary (Topher Grace) links the assassination of...

By all accounts, "The Impossible" is one of the best movies of the year. Not just heartwarming but legitimately moving, it stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts as a couple who, along with their three children, are flung into chaos and danger during the deadly 2004 tsunami. It's a story that is guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat and leave a lump in your throat as you wonder if any of them can possibly survive.
Unless, of course, you've seen the trailer, in which case you know the answer — and the plot of the entire film.
This seems to be happening more and more these days. Movie studios are turning away from the classic tease, which tries to get you into the theater to find out what happens, and turning towards a new type of trailer where they show you what happens and hope you like it...
