In this episode, the acting profession is discussed as a permanent quest to suspend time.Luis Gnecco is a Chilean actor with an extensive career in theater and television since the 1990s. In the last decade, his versatility has been recognized internationally for collaborating with important Latin American directors such as Rodrigo Sepúlveda, Fernando Meirelles, and Carlos Carrera. In Pablo Larraín's Neruda and Matías Lira's El bosque de Karadima, he played two well-known and controversial characters in Chilean history, sparking interesting discussions about the fictionalization of reality and the representation of horror. On the other hand, Esteban Bigliardi is an Argentine actor with a diverse filmography spanning various dramatic styles. His collaborations with directors such as Lisandro Alonso, Romina Paula, Alejandro Fadel, and María Alché have allowed him to explore genres as diverse as family drama, thriller, experimental narratives, and even horror. In the last year, he starred...

We’re just two weeks away from the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and this morning the august French institution revealed who will determine the winners of this year’s awards. A cross-section of international talent will join “Barbie” and “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, who will lead the panel, in an effort to undoubtedly compare apples to oranges and try to make sense of a diverse slate of films from directors like David Cronenberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Baker, Ali Abbasi, and many others.
Lily Gladstone, who won several Best Actress awards last year (but not the Oscar!) for her revolutionary turn in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is the other American joining Gerwig. The actress, currently seen on FX/Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” is returning to Cannes one year after Martin Scorsese and Apple Original Films brought “Flower Moon” to the French Riviera festival for its out-of-competition debut.

J.A. Bayona’s Netflix epic Society of the Snow swept Saturday night’s Platino Awards, picking up a total of six trophies including the top award of the night for best Ibero-American fiction film.
Bayona’s film follows the tragic events that take place after Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972. Only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately made it out alive as a handful of others perished on the mountain during the 72 days from the time of the crash until rescuers arrived.
Bayona also made his way to the stage to accept a trophy for best director, and his film’s haul also included best male performance for star Enzo Vogrincic, best editing for Jaume Marti and Andres Gil, best cinematography for Pedro Luque, and best sound for Oriol Tarragó, Marc Orts and Jorge Adrados.

In a triumphant night for Spain, J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow” swept the top prizes at Platino Xcaret, named after the venue of the annual Platino Awards this year, which took place at the Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Argentina cinema’s plight, exacerbated by far-right president Javier Milei’s closure of its film institute, Incaa, was also on many people’s minds.
Citing veteran Argentine filmmaker Adolfo Aristarain as one of his inspirations, Bayona said upon receiving his best director award: “Argentina, we are here standing by your side, you’re not alone.”

Spain’s film and TV industries are in their second wave as standout content providers for global streamers. Some of the country’s most intriguing titles will take the international stage this weekend at MipTV in Cannes.
Built on a foundation of hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and “Locked Up,” a new era of internationally renowned content creation in Spain kicked off in 2018 with Alex Pina’s blockbuster series “Money Heist,” picked up by Netflix.
Since then, Spain has enjoyed a place among the steadiest content suppliers for major players worldwide, taking advantage of its often character-driven dramas, high-quality creators and producers, and a language spoken by more than 600 million people around the globe.
Although the market is continuously evolving, local industry has adapted to different new business models, entering bigger and more ambitious productions, often via co-production. Spanish fiction’s global popularity continues to grow to accommodate audience appetites.

Films made by the likes of Netflix seem to have one chance to get noticed – and then they’re falling away, almost forgotten. A few thoughts.
You might just have noticed, but we’ve just had the Academy Awards come and go, with a traditional studio taking home the top prize. Snapping at their heels, streaming services spending a lot of money to promote their wares, but not winning a lot of gold.
Among this year’s streaming contenders: Maestro, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Nyad, Society Of The Snow and Rustin. Some smashing films there: my fear is, in some cases, that’s going to be pretty much the last we’ve heard of them.
The unsuccessful Oscar campaign is nothing fresh of course. In recent years though, streaming services – Netflix in particular – have allowed hard cash to flow into their attempt to earn Academy Awards. Of those streamers,...

Non-English-language movies stormed the Oscars this year, with five films taking home statuettes — the most ever in one ceremony.
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari’s Best Screenplay Academy Award for French-language courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall followed three past non-English-language winners: Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019), Pedro Almodóvar’s Talk To Her (2002) and A Man and a Woman by Claude Lelouch and Pierre Uytterhoeven (1966).
The Best Sound Academy Award for Jonathan Glazer’s German-language Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest marked a first for a non-English-language film. The pic also clinched Best International Feature Film.

The UK-Polish historical drama about Auschwitz concentration camp, ‘The Zone of Interest’, won the Oscar for the Best International Feature Film. Actor Dwayne Johnson and rapper Bad Bunny announced the winning film, which is based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis.
The film was nominated alongside “Io Capitano” (Italy) , “Perfect Days” (Japan), “Society of the Snow” (Spain) and “The Teachers’ Lounge” (Germany).
While accepting the honour, the film’s director Jonathan Glazer thanked everyone and said: “Our film shows what dehumanisation leads.”
Starring German actors Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller as the Nazi commandant Rudolf Hoss and his wife Hedwig, it focuses on the pair as they strive to build a dream life for their family in a home next to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp.
Last month, ‘The Zone of Interest’ won a BAFTA for the best film not in the English language.

Another Oscars season is over. The 96th Academy Awards have wrapped, and the full 2024 Oscars winners list has been revealed.
“Oppenheimer” had an air of inevitability about it unlike few Best Picture contenders in recent memory: IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted it would win seven Oscars tonight, including the top prize. And indeed it did, nabbing seven statuettes overall. But the triumphs for “Oppenheimer” at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards suggested it was the film to beat, by any standard.
“Oppenheimer” also received the most nominations overall, with 13. Its seven wins were for: Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture — the most of any film tonight. The next-most nominations was 11 for “Poor Things,” and then 10 for “Killers of the Flower Moon.

Jonathan Glazer’s landmark Holocaust film The Zone of Interest, as widely expected, has just scooped the International Feature Oscar. The British film is the 20th that the UK has submitted to the category, and the first to win the race.
Inspired loosely by Martin Amis’ 2014 novel of the same name and set outside the walls of Auschwitz during the Holocaust, the German-language Zone of Interest stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller (also a Best Actress nominee tonight for Anatomy of a Fall) as Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, as they strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden separated from the Nazi concentration and extermination camp by a only a short wall. What is happening on the other side is rarely hinted at.

The Zone of Interest, the German-language Holocaust drama directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, has won the United Kingdom its first-ever Academy Award for best international feature at the Oscars 2024.
In his speech for his Cannes Grand Prix-winner, Glazer linked the film’s subject to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where the October 7 Hamas terror attacks on Israel have led the Benjamin Netanyahu-led government to launch a ground invasion into Gaza that has now left over 30,0000 Palestinians dead.
“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present,” Glazer told the audience, who had honored him with a standing ovation upon his win. “Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.”

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

Another awards season comes to an end, as the 2024 Oscars named Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Best Picture, beating out contenders like Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, and Poor Things. Nolan also won for directing, while Cillian Murphy beat out The Holdovers‘s Paul Giamatti for Lead Actor and Robert Downey Jr. received the win for Supporting Actor.
But Poor Things didn’t fare too badly, taking home four awards including a surprise win for Emma Stone, who was widely considered the underdog given Lily Gladstone’s heavily favored performance in Flower Moon. American Fiction also took home a well-deserved adapted screenplay nomination, while Anatomy of a Fall won for original screenplay.
Barbie didn’t go completely win-less, as Billie Eilish and Finneas won their second Oscar for “What Was I Made For?” (just after a jaw-dropping rendition of “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling and a whole...

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

The Victorian era horror comedy “Poor Things” is set to face off against the atomic age thriller “Oppenheimer” in 10 different categories at the upcoming Academy Awards. While the latter is looking increasingly likely to sweep many of the top races, some of the technical fields are very much at play. And “Poor Things” has a great shot at least a couple of Oscar fortunes.
One place where “Oppenheimer” is not expected to dominate is Best Makeup and Hairstyling. And that presents an opportunity for “Poor Things” to pick up an extra trophy. And I believe that it most likely will. Here are five reasons why “Poor Things” will win the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
1. The presumed frontrunner appears to be vulnerable.
As of this writing, “Maestro” holds a significant lead in Gold Derby’s official odds for makeup/hair. And it’s largely thanks to the way that...

Malaga, Spain — “The Chapel,” from “Piggy” director Carlota Pereda, Celia Rico’s competition title “Little Loves,” loved by a lot of critics, and “Free Falling,” produced by “Society of the Snow’s” J.A. Bayona and that film’s producer Belén Atienza, looked like three of the hottest tickets at this week’s Malaga market and Spanish Screenings which rated as the most upbeat in years.
Most all sales agents on the films – focusing on titles from Spain and Latin America – whose ranks are now swelled by Antonia Nava’s Neo Art International, forecast or saw deal traction on more than one title or a broad slate of films.
“Malaga was great for our movies,” said Latido Films’ Antonio Saura.
“For us, it’s been the best Spanish Screenings of the last years,” reported Luis Recart at Bendita Film Sales.

Spain’s cultural and historical heritage and its diverse natural landscapes, from Moorish castles and royal palaces to snowy peaks, vast deserts and rugged coastlines, have made the country a prime location for international films and series.
In the last decade, Spain’s national government and key regions – the Canary Islands and the Basque Country’s Bizkaia – have added tax rebates and credits which now rate as among the best in Europe.
The country’s varied lands have served as practically the entire world for Netflix’s “The Crown,” while its imposing Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalusia played a key role in J.A. Bayona’s acclaimed survival drama “Society of the Snow.”
Bayona used the Laguna de las Yeguas area in the Sierra Nevada as a key location in the film, which chronicles the 1972 Uruguayan airplane crash high in the snow-covered Andes that left survivors stranded on a glacier 4,000 meters...
