Strong emphasis on family relationships
witra_as4 June 2022
Bene Dion placed strong emphasis on family relationships and kept us engaged with situational comedy and everyday subtleties. This heartwarming drama is very well cast as a whole particularly Tika & Wendy. One giant hug for everyone involved in making it.

Perfect balance of comedy and heartwarming family story
bimaadiwira4 July 2022
This movie is able to create a perfect example of how a "comedy based actor/actress movie" should be done. There's no need to excessive gimmick or trying to make every actor/actress stand out for their own known persona.

The story itself contains emotional rollercoaster and success to raise the common family problems based on culture and all the transitions happening on current parent-child generation gap.

Kudos to everyone that involved in this movie, there's no flop moment on acting or scenes. Would love to see your next project.

Nature and culture perfect mix
canisthya8 October 2022
There's a lot of hype about this movie in social media so I give it a go once it's on Netflix. I am not a Bataknese but I can understand the jokes and even learn alot about Batak culture. I really enjoy and feel immersed with the culture and watching as the story unfolds around it. The director did a very good job telling the story while showing the beautiful scenery around the characters hometown and the family customs. It surely is a homage to Indonesia's rich nature and culture.

The strong message about parenting, growth, and patriarchal society that inflicts to the damage for both women and men are all well delivered. You might cry at some heated and difficult dialogues, like me.

The Best Family Drama Movies
ytharumta2 June 2022
Every detail and storyline made for this film is based on the true story of most Indonesian families, especially Batak families.

In this film, bene dion turns some comedians into actors and turns actors into comedians. As a film connoisseur, this film proves that Bene Dion is a genius director and writer.

Congratulations to all the crew of Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap!

Horas!

Full of laugh and tears

After watching this film, I went home with a very satisfied heart because the film really exceeded expectations. A very good family drama film, there are so many lessons to be learned from this film.

Even though the film is about the Batak family, I'm sure the film will relate to almost all families.

Big respect to the director and all the cast. Thank you for this very emotional movie.

The real story about Bataknese life when they take care about their children. A lot of sorrow and tear in every event. Even if you from another culture, you can still cry while watching it.

A familial comedy-drama that felt familiar and pertinent
pasaribuharisfadli8 June 2022
It was a bit shaky at first, but then it's getting better. A familial comedy-drama that felt familiar and pertinent.

While the drama was sufficiently emotive and heartfelt, it's admirable that the jokes weren't sticking out like a sore thumb just for the sake of the need for some comedic vignettes.

One thing is for sure, Bene Dion Rajagukguk did quite a leap in his sophomore directorial effort, although it bugged me a bit when he chose not to make it a vernacular film considering the rich anthropological aspect of the film's nature.

Really represents the Bataknese family
samODA-0924 July 2022
This film really describes how Batak tribal families in general, especially for families whose heads of families are still very attached to customs. This film provides many important lessons and messages for the audience, especially those who have Batak ethnic families.

For myself, I can feel myself in the shoes of a child in this film. And in this film, I also understand how the position of a father is shown in the film. I became able to understand how my father felt.

I'm a little confused about this film, whether it falls into the comedy or drama film genre, because in this film it pays more attention to the plot and I'm confused about where the comedy lies.

Maybe if judged in terms of drama flow, this film can be appreciated because the plot that is presented is like a continuous drama plot. But if judged because this film is labelled a comedy film, I don't know where the location of the jokes that should be brought up, maybe this film is a little worse than "somewhat laen". Because this film is too focused on the author's customs and is more like introducing Batak culture to the audience.

The visuals of this film are a little strange because of the dark theme, maybe there are some comedy films that use this viusal but in this film it just doesn't fit.

6/10.

A Movie for Everybody
bajingantampan14 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I went to watch the movie because of the hype around it and it telling a story about my own culture. No high expectation. I ended up with tears coming out of my eyes.

It was a movie with a simple story. Grown-ups and their parents' expectations. It reminded me of Marty (1955). It showed Batak's cultures, it was played mostly by Batak actors, it was primarily set in Batak's land, but it's everyone's story and you don't have to be a Batak to get the message the filmmakers tried to convey.

Bene Dion Rajagukguk captured so many Batak's current issues and placed those on each character. A father who tried to maintain his can-never-be-wrong superiority in the family, a mother who simply wanted to see her children again, and what they wanted to see from their kids; culturally-approved marriage, careers, and undertakings. Bene Dion even questioned the traditional Batak's patriarchal views through Sarma (played wonderfully by Gita Bhebhita Butarbutar) whose voice had never been heard of before her outburst at the climactic scene.

The movie started with many comic actions (made sense since the director and most of the actors were stand-up comedians) but those never came out over the top. It also showed us how magnificent Lake Toba is and how appealing Batak traditions are. The cinematography was great.

When the movie ended, I sincerely hoped that the movie would won Indonesian Film Festival.

Truly Bataknese family
The movie was made suitably appropriate to represent situation in a typical Bataknese family.. perfectly framed in the 2hours duration.

The conflicts, hard character, melancholic, the moral, responsibility including their complexity are wrapped in a package.

Really wish that the movie could be also released in a streaming platform, so that Bataknese people in overseas can watch it.

I hope that there will continued sequels coming.. 💙

Great storyline!
ladyroockerz24 April 2023
Not just a family drama, but also shows the gender role and expectation in the household. Nice music, landscape and culture story of Batak :) really good acting! From crying, laughing and angry moment, they got it all perfect.

Taught us about cultural ceremony and value of Batak; family is number 1. Make me feel missing home Now :) and definitely worth of my tears to watch the happy ending.

Congrats the crew! You made it to the academy award! We want more this kind of film being produce and watch by Indonesian families and beyond.

Really like the sense of humor here! Not too much but well accepted.

Whole package of family movie
nottfreyja13 June 2022
Story about Batak Culture intertwined with modern timeline. It's absolutely astounding, Bene Dion really able to direct the whole movie from laugh, to serious, then laugh again, with heartwarming feeling about family.

Perfect movie flow, amazing panoramic view of Toba, combined with Batak's art, seasoned with some light jokes.

I don't expect a lot from Indonesian Movies, but this one really above my expectations, hats off to "Ngeri - Ngeri Sedap"

WELL-TOLD. DEEPLY PERSONAL.
andrewchristianjr9 October 2022
This film presents a very relatable family conflict (especially for Batak people). No wonder many are emotional after watching. Funny moments and dramatic elements are delivered in balance. This film combines human problems with local identity that is well-told and deeply personal.

Good family-drama
yoonbeeyond29 January 2024
This movie is not just about family conflict. It's also about the urge to preserving traditional culture in modern era, where people have their own desires which may contradict with the culture. It's a story most family could relate to. For the drama, it's met my expectation, it successfully makes me cry. I was skeptical with the comedy, I always find comedy in movies are cringe. But this one is not, the comedy feels like it's just happened naturally. Even though this movie is more focused on the drama, sometimes I laughed at the funny scenes. There's a lot of Bataknese culture showed in this movie. The beautiful views of Toba Lake made this movie even more better.

I enjoyed it a lot. Really a worth try!

Good

Warning: Spoilers
For me as a daughter in native Batak tribe family, that's not really relate to me. Maybe the way my parent educated me very different from this movie.

The funny thing I found when I watch this in cinema is, there was a conversation that was quite sarcastic, but because the one who said it was a comedian son the whole cinema laughed, but if you are a native Batak tribe you will understand what he means and not laugh.

A family drama film full of meaning and empathy with cultural beauty
HafizhMaulana2124 November 2022
In order to let go of the longing, a couple carried out a divorce plan so that their wandering children would go back to their hometowns. All of that didn't go smoothly.

Honestly, I still didn't expect that this movie is so good. It is rare to see an Indonesian film with a family theme like this film. Moreover, this film contains cultural elements from the Batak tribe. We are shown about Batak culture in the form of advice or speech that there is dialogue and daily activities of the community in certain scenes in the film. In addition, we are also invited to see the beauty side of Lake Toba. I think this film tells the story of a family that is not far from the reality of the family in Indonesia today. Many of the events in the film relate to the experiences around me. It's no wonder that so many people are crying to see this movie, including me, who also participated in this film. Many scenes break with a very heart-wrenching moral message. Likewise, dialogue is not long-winded but so deeply felt that we feel sympathetic and melted. The character development throughout the film is so dynamic that we can feel the problems of each family member. The acting of the actors is also very fitting and looks natural. One scene that I find most memorable, the justification scene in the living room. Although this film is a family drama, it is also inseparable from the comedic elements that are also unsaturated and light. Everything in the film, indeed, is 'ngeri-ngeri sedap'.

Although the cast is a well-known comic artist, it does not make this film look solely funny. Not many comedic elements are wasted. Comedy is on the right dialogue and situation so elements of comedy are easy to come by. Boris Bokir, Indra Jegel, Lolox and Gita Bhebita are in fact capable of playing drama in totality.

An honest and balanced portrait of Batak family and its cultural values
ryolusky136 October 2022
Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap is finally out on Netflix and I wanted to prove what most viewers have been said positively about this movie. And I totally agree with them.

I am Batak and I can relate to almost all of the situations, drama, values, critics, and messages that Bene wished to convey to the audiences. Critics being well-delivered are about Batak men masculinity, parent-children rigid relationship, gender inequality, and the holiness of Batak culture.

Its setting and location could not be more perfect than this, and I did not miss small details like the red plates and glasses, that 'special' terpal on the culture ceremony, and those fried spicy dencis or sardens that have reminded me of my childhood memories.

For me Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap is a top notch and honest family drama, and truly deserved its reputation. Hope more people would watch it and get the messages.

Peace and horas!
