On the surface, “Música” feels like a very standard story about a talented guy who finds himself caught between two girls he likes, and — rather than be honest with them — starts dating both at the same time. Hilarity ensues. Thankfully, much like the fictional Rudy he plays here, the real Rudy Mancuso is more than meets the eye. His feature directorial debut is a smart and charming coming-of-age love story that is also a musical and such a good cinematic portrayal of synesthesia that it’ll make you forget all about the other, misbegotten attempts to thread the same needle (does anyone remember “August Rush”?).
We are in the era of social media movie directors, but the days of “Fred: The Movie” are thankfully gone. Between Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” and Danny and Michael Philippou’s “Talk to Me,” YouTube is starting to seem like a viable incubator for worthwhile film directors.

In 2005, John Cena rapped that we couldn't see him. In 2023, he couldn't be more visible. Cena, a former WWE wrestler, philanthropist, and seemingly all-around decent dude, has become one of cinema's more amusing and gregarious movie stars in recent years, appearing in light comedies and steely action films with equal aplomb. He hosts game shows, raps, and can speak Mandarin. As a screen presence, he is friendly, goofy, and quite good at playing lovable lugs and clueless dads. While he did appear in explosion-forward flicks like "12 Rounds" early in his career, Cena has rarely been sold as an action hero; he would sooner crop up in "Trainwreck" or "Fred: The Movie" than, say, "The Scorpion King."
As such, the character of Jakob, whom Cena plays in "F9" and "Fast X," is a change of pace for him. In "F9," Jakob was essentially a villain, acting out against Dom Toretto...

This carefully told morality story about life in the shadow of gang violence in south-east London is a strong debut for Andrew Onwubolu, Aka Rapman
YouTube hasn’t been the best breeding ground for cinematic talent, as 2010’s Fred: The Movie, which grew out of a hit on the video-sharing platform, will attest. This much-hyped inner-city drama – the debut of Rapman, Aka Andrew Onwubolu, whose web series, Shiro’s Story, reached 10m hits – is an assured and capably performed morality play.

Currently, there are 871 YouTube channels with at least one million subscribers. In April 2009, though, there was just one: Fred. The YouTube home of Lucas Cruikshank's polarizing, screechy-voiced character was the first channel to ever achieve a seven-digit subscriber count. After becoming one of YouTube's first stars, Cruikshank became one of the first YouTubers to make it to TV when Fred: The Movie debuted on Nickelodeon. About two years ago, Cruikshank ceased regular updates on the Fred channel, and he began making videos on the Lucas and Jenny channel he launched with his friend Jennifer Veal. Recently, though, Fred has returned. After a fake launch involving a fictional Korean corporation, Fred himself came back to YouTube on August 28th. With YouTube's first million-subscriber man back in business, we figured it was time for a special edition of YouTube Millionaires. Here's what Cruikshank had to say about the past, present, and future of the Fred character.

Mark Kermode's latest book Hatchet Job: Love Movies, Hate Critics brilliantly puts the shifting sands of contemporary film criticism under the microscope.
In an age when emerging digital platforms mean anybody can voice their opinion on film (and be heard), and newspapers scale back the number of critics in full-time employment, Kermode has adeptly moved with the times, utilising radio, TV, podcast, video blog and print (he recently stepped into the Observer shoes of the esteemed Philip French) to cement himself as Britain's foremost movie critic.
His third book Hatchet Job is a passionate look at his profession past and present, the emerging friction between paying public and critic and the "first but wrong" online culture that favours speed of reaction over quality of argument.
In the opening chapter, Kermode acknowledges that a critical pan, or "hatchet job", will often provoke a bigger reaction from his listenership. With that in mind,...

Pixie Lott is to make her TV acting debut in BBC One's Inspector George Gently.
The '60s detective drama - starring Martin Shaw - will start shooting a new television film next month.
'Mama Do' singer Lott will play Megan, an entertainer at the Blue Bird Holiday Camp in 1969.
The popstar previously made her feature film debut in 2010, appearing in big-screen comedy Fred: The Movie.
"I love the fact that Inspector George Gently is a period drama set in the '60s and I can't wait to play the role of Megan," said Lott.
"It will be great to be filming in the North East, and getting to play a role that gives me a real feel for the period."
Series producer Matthew Bird added that the cast and crew were "delighted" to welcome Lott onto the show.

Having won 18 awards at International Film Festivals to date, the wonderfully gory and gut-splattering The Revenant is an action-packed, dark, Zom-Buddy film featuring an inventive and blood-gushing fresh take on the tale of the undead. The film hits DVD and Blu-ray here in the UK on April 2nd courtesy of Universal Pictures.
Bart (David Anders – Vampire Diaries, 24), a soldier serving in Iraq, wakes up the morning after his own funeral, to find he’s not only still alive but has been resurrected as The Revenant, or one who has returned from the dead…
Unable to ignore his newfound thirst for blood, Bart knows that there is one person in his life whom he can rely on for help: his slacker best friend Joey (Chris Wylde – Fred: The Movie). Fred: The Movie drew 7.6 million viewers during its debut on Nickelodeon in September 2010. That was enough pairs of eyeballs to make it the top TV movie of that year with kids 2 to 11 and 6 to 11 and to encourage the powers that be at the children’s cable network to order a sequel. Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred premiered on Nickelodeon in October 2011 and drew an audience of 5.7 million viewers. Like the original, the sophomore installment stars Lucas Cruikshank as a hyperactive, high pitched, prepubescent, Judy-crushin’, schoolboy who won’t be denied his object of affection and/or attention (which, in the original is Judy and in the sequel is vampires). And, like the original, Night of the Living Fred did so well, it inspired executives at Nickelodeon to order some more. A third Fred movie is currently in the works, but those Fred fans in need a dose of...

MGM has risen from the ashes of bankruptcy to partner with Paramount on a remake of the 1983 Nicolas Cage movie Valley Girl, but there's a twist: this one's going to be a musical. Little-known director Clay Weiner wowed studio executives by producing a self-financed demo reel over the holiday break, which featured choreographed dance numbers to music that will be used in the movie. It impressed the suits so much that they gave him the job over his better-established competition. This is a real life lesson for you up-and-coming filmmakers out there: sometimes all it takes is going the extra mile. More details below! If you've never heard of Clay Weiner, you're not alone. He's built a career mostly directing commercials, and he ventured into features once before with the made-for-tv film Fred: The Movie for Nickelodeon. Deadline says this version of Valley Girl follows the original story of ...

Clay Weiner, a successful director of TV commercials who also directed Nickelodeon.s Fred: The Movie, has been chosen by Paramount and MGM to helm their planned musical remake of the 1983 movie Valley Girl, a largely forgettable dramedy that helped launch Nicolas Cage.s career. Deadline, which breaks the story, says Weiner won the job over .a number of well-established helmers who wanted the job.. Weiner apparently won studio execs over with a three-minute reel he paid for out of his own pocket that showed how he planned to choreograph new dance routines to classic .80s songs from the film (and the era). The site says the remake will follow the plot of the original . with a punk rocker from the city trying to win the heart of a shallow girl from the Valley . and will showcase mash-up tunes from bands like The Go-Gos and The Cars. MGM’s near-bankruptcy from a few years back must have really shook them to their core, because ever since they came roaring (sigh) back they’ve been trying to remake nearly everything in their library from Robocop to Carrie to even the recently announced Death Wish.
Add another cog to the MGM Remake machine; Deadline reports that the studio, in conjunction with Paramount, are unleashing a remake of the 80′s classic Valley Girl, which helped change the lexicon of our country as well as jump started the career of Nicolas Cage. But this isn’t just a straight up remake because that would be too easy; instead MGM is turning Valley Girl into a musical in the same vein as the upcoming Rock of Ages where instead of exerting any creativity, they’re just optioning 80′s songs and having the cast sing them instead. Great. Didn’t we stop caring about the 80′s yet?...

Exclusive: Paramount has joined MGM’s effort to mount a musical film remake of 1983′s Valley Girl, the film that helped launch the career of Nicolas Cage. The remake will launch a new feature directing career, as the studios chose Clay Weiner over a number of well-established helmers who wanted the job. Who is Clay Weiner and how did this happen? Weiner is a prolific commercials director — he helmed the Super Bowl spot for Time Warner Cable with Ricky Gervais and Mary Louise Parker — but his only real credit is the Nickelodeon film Fred: The Movie. He was determined to win the Valley Girl job, and his reps were able to include him among a bunch of helmers who met with studio executives before the holiday. Weiner was the only one who spent the two-week holiday break putting together a three-minute demo reel, paid for out of his own pocket,...

Usually when a movie is remade into a musical on the big screen, it has already gone through an evolutionary step on stage (see: Hairspray). But Paramount and MGM have decided to skip the theatre part of the equation, shoving a tune-filled version of the 1983 comedy Valley Girl into development. And now it has a director, with Clay Weiner winning the job.Weiner doesn’t exactly have the greatest cinematic CV – his one credit is 2010’s Fred: The Movie, based off of the YouTube videos created by Lucas Cruikshank, which is an object lesson in why some ‘net sensations really shouldn’t make the leap to film. But the director also boasts a lengthy and successful commercials credit list, and he was willing to go the extra mile to snag the Valley Girl job ahead of other, more experienced filmmakers. When given the chance to present his ideas, he self-funded...

It’s not the same to say that “the internet is the future of television” and “web content is the future of television”, because as Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred proves, what works in small doses of three to four minutes translates poorly to TV episode-length or feature-length entertainment. It can work the other way, as webisodes have proven, but Lucas Cruikshank’s one-dimensional surge of obnoxiousness has no place anywhere else but the web. Nickelodeon clearly doesn’t get that. Not only did it commit to Fred: The Movie, which capitalized on Fred doing silly things with nothing else to say for itself. Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred descends even further with a title that confuses its reference by being a riff on Fright Night, and a sense of humor based on fart noises and Fred’s modulated voice to make it sound like he...

Lucas Cruikshank’s first major motion picture debuted on Nickelodeon in September 2010. The movie is based on Cruikshank’s uber-popular and readily detested YouTube series Fred, was adapted for television by “entertainment management, media and content production company” The Collective, and stars the hyperactive, high pitched, prepubescent, Judy-crushin’, six-year-old titular character Fred Figglehorn. If you had any doubt that Hollywood was reliant on big movie franchises, let them be eradicated right about now...
As has long been the case, sequels are a reliable way of making plenty of cash from recognisable names. They've been a part of the Hollywood filmmaking process for decades, and as this list of 95 sequels currently in the works proves, will continue to be so for as long as we stump up the cash to go and see them.
We've been doing this list annually for a couple of years now, and this year's collection is, perhaps unsurprising, the longest round-up of upcoming sequels that we've done. Still, given that there are nearly a hundred sequels listed below, we're a little sad to see that Hollywood's people in suits couldn't find room for a belated return to Mac And Me...

Maker Studios has been relatively quiet as it ramps up its staff in its new Venice, CA homebase, building out a veritable powerhouse of top YouTube creative talent. Now word comes that the studio has raised around $1.5 million in funding in a round led by Greycroft Partners and Grp partners. Mark Suster, a partner at Grp partners (and host of web show This Week in Venture Capital) is also listed as a Board member in a recent SEC filing for Maker Studios. The company confirmed the funding round to us, and it’s now already listed as an active part of Greycroft’s investment portfolio, alongside recent investments like Ad.ly, Klout and Vuze. It didn’t confirm the exact size of the round, though in the SEC Form D filing from January, the company stated it plans on raising $1,524,999, with five directors listed including founders Ben Donovan, Lisa Donovan (aka LisaNova), Daniel Zappin,...

By now you’ve heard the news an animated TV comedy series based on the uber-popular The Annoying Orange web series is one step closer to fruition (Lol!). Annoying Orange creator Dane Boedigheimer partnered with La-based management and production shop The Collective to create six 30-minute episodes and score the puntastic program a television distribution deal. We know a few of the details, like Tom Sheppard will pen the first six installments, Conrad Vernon will executive produce, and Malcom McDowell will voice one of the characters, but other info is hard to come by. So, we went straight to the source and asked Boedigheimer himself a few questions about what to expect from an Annoying Orange TV series: Tubefilter: What does the one-to-four-minute Annoying Orange web series look like once it's transformed into a 22-minute TV show? What should viewers expect? Dane Boedigheimer: Viewers can expect all of the...

Lionsgate has begun work on a sequel to last year's Nickelodeon TV film Fred: The Movie. Based on the YouTube character created by Lucas Cruikshank, the film followed an extrovert teenager called Fred Figglehorn on his misadventures. Despite being widely panned by critics, Lionsgate has hired John Fortenberry to direct a sequel called Night Of The Living Fred, based on a script by Fred: The Movie director David A. Goodman. "Fred's journey from internet character to media star has been nothing short of astounding, and we're excited to partner (more)...

British film-maker Gareth Edwards really is a remarkable beast; a cine-literate visual-effects whizz with a genuinely independent sensibility whose ultra-low-budget debut feature puts its bloated Hollywood competitors in the shade. Set in the aftermath (rather than the heat) of an alien outbreak, Monsters (2010, Vertigo, 12) is a thoroughly unexpected creature feature/road movie hybrid, a low-key character drama which just happens to feature giant tentacled space invaders. Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able are the mismatched photojournalist and publisher's daughter forced to trek their way home through Mexico's "infected zones", vast quarantined areas in which the extraterrestrial infestation is now allegedly "contained".
Crucially, the moment of world crisis seems to have passed, with headline news of the creature's extraordinary presence having become mere background noise.

YouTube sensation Fred Figglehorn is giving the big screen another shot. Lucas Cruikshank, who created the Fred character that went bananas on YouTube will millions of views, will star in the 3D movie Night of the Living Fred for Lionsgate. The script comes from "Family Guy" scribe David A. Goodman and is being directed by John Fortenberry who has directed a whole lot of TV shows including an episode of "Sonny with a Chance."
"Fred: The Movie" started as an indie feature film that was bought by and aired on Nickelodeon and broke ratings records, however, "Fred" sacrificed his movie debut. Now, with Lionsgate behind the pic, it looks like "Fred" will get a chance to be a movie star after all.
Filming has already begun in Los Angeles.

If you don't know who Fred Figglehorn is, I sincerely envy you. My life was so much better before I was introduced to that idiotic "YouTube star" who is really nothing more than a hyperactive, high-voiced jackass that only people with an Iq below 30 find entertaining. Because somebody thought it was a good idea to give make a movie about this dumbass, Fred: The Movie came out last year and - surprise, surprise - nobody went to go see it. That only makes this story more infuriating. THR reports that Night of the Living Fred, a sequel to Fred; The Movie, is now in development and being produced by Lionsgate, Varsity Picture and The Collective. While the article doesn't provide any details about the story, the movie apparently will be made in 3D. In a statement announcing the project, Lionsgate.s president Michael Paseornek said, .We're always excited to partner...

Fred Figgelhorn is about to become a star.
Oh, we know he already thinks he's a star, and he does have more than 2 million YouTube channel subscribers who agree. But despite landing his own television movie, "Fred: The Movie," and selling a lot of official merchandise, the wider public doesn't know who he -- or his real-life counterpart, Lucas Cruikshank -- is.
But that's about to change, because Fred is getting a big screen, 3-D movie from Lionsgate.
According to Deadline, John Fortenberry is directing Fred in his first feature film "Night of the Living Fred." It's a sequel to "Fred: The Movie" which aired on Nickelodeon last fall and was a huge success for the network. Lionsgate clearly took notice and realized the hyperactive six-year-old was begging for a bigger audience.

Lucas Cruikshank's YouTube creation and sensation "Fred Figglehorn" is getting a 3-D movie. Lionsgate, Varsity Pictures and The Collective are producing Night of the Living Fred, which is a follow-up to 2010's Fred: The Movie (which debuted on Nickelodeon). While Lionsgate has North American distribution rights, they are selling international rights to the film. Family Guy's David A. Goodman wrote the script and John Fortenberry (Blue Mountain State) is directing. Lionsgate production/development president Michael Paseornek says: “We're always excited to partner with talent who has a direct relationship with a broad online fan base, because there are so many possibilities for engaging that audience throughout the filmmaking and marketing process. Lionsgate has committed to making Night of the Living Fred, a small budget 3D film that is a followup to Fred: The Movie. That telepic racked up high ratings for Nickelodeon last fall. The protagonist, Fred Figgelhorn, is a fast-talking, hyperactive character created and played by teen actor Lucas Cruikshank, originally in a series of YouTube videos. He's got his own "Fred" channel, which has over 2 million subscribers. Lionsgate will control North American distribution and sell international. John Fortenberry is directing the film, which has just gotten underway in La. David A. Goodman wrote the script (he wrote the other Fred flick). Varsity Pictures' Brian Robbins and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett are producing with Gary Binkow and Evan Weiss of The Collective. Here's one of the kid's YouTube videos. He sounds a bit like Eric Cartman to me. This is obviously geared for a generation far younger than mine, but...

Let me begin by saying that I do not read The Daily Mail, I do not vote BNP and I certainly do not believe in unwarranted censorship. This is not some scare-mongering piece of propaganda which illegitimately claims that Kick-Ass promotes paedophilia, Machete sponsors racism and Childs Play 3 will turn your children into knife-wielding murderers, it is simply a timely meditation on whether the 12A certificate is still valid.
Since its inception as a means of bridging the gap between PG and 12, for films such as The Lord of the Rings and Spider-Man, which – although sporting mature elements – were hardly unsuitable for younger children, the 12A rating has boomed in recent years, permitting the Star Wars saga and Harry Potter franchise to pursue darker territory without fear of a box office crippling 15 rating. While there is often no issue with the BBFC’s decisions, every so often there are films...

YouTube is playing in dangerous territory with the news this week that the company is going to spend millions for celebrity created content. New York Magazine is reporting the news—though Google and YouTube are unable to comment on it—that YouTube is offering up to $5 million per celeb-branded channel. One insider is quoted as saying: “by offering a wider range of better-quality content, viewers are happier, Google’s advertisers are happier, and the talent is happier.” Oy. Breaking this apart, there’s first the shaky assumption that these traditional celebrities can actually offer ‘better-quality’ content on their own, as opposed to say the tens of thousands of YouTube natives that have mastered the art of luring viewers away from overpriced TV fare. YouTube’s new CEO Salar Kamangar, who replaced co-founder Chad Hurley in the top spot earlier this year, is moving the world’s most popular online video...
