The film makes a few references to classic horror films. The scene when the cross falls from the wall above Samantha's bed is almost identical to a scene from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). When Freddy Krueger almost breaks through the wall above Nancy's bed, knocking her crucifix off. Thomas even uses one of Nancy's lines, "Come out and show yourself." The scenes with the TV tuned to static and paranormal investigators are a probable nod to Poltergeist (1982).
