Four decades removed from the Tate murders, Charles Manson is one of those names that are entirely too capable of sending many a shiver down the spine. On tap right now we have the trailer for the latest film to explore his madness, Brandon Slagle's House of Manson. Check it out!
From the Press Release
House of Manson chronicles Charles Manson's life from childhood up until his arrest following the raid on Barker Ranch months after the infamous Tate/Labianca murders that sent a shockwave not just through Los Angeles but throughout the entire world.
The film was written and directed by Brandon Slagle, who was recently deemed the "go-to-gore-guy" by The Hollywood Reporter during their coverage of the European Film Market. While not a "gory" film, House of Manson is poised to take a more intense approach to the subject matter than previous film and TV iterations have.

You can’t fling a dead crow in a Best Buy these days without hitting some type of “found footage” possession movie, ever since the overnight success of Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity, and while most of these low-budget wannabes fail miserably in replicating true paranormal horror, a select few shining examples make all the underwhelming watches worthwhile. Well, Ok, almost worthwhile – have you ever seen Paranormal Entity for the love of Pete?!
David Jung’s The Possession Of Michael King happens to be one of those under-the-radar examples of truly unnerving demonic horror, mixing ample doses of religious slighting and Satanic ball-busting in a way that actually becomes horrific instead of brutishly fratty. I found myself involved in the story of Michael King (played by Shane Johnson), an unfortunate man who embarks on an ill-advised journey to prove that there are no greater powers above, below, or around us.

Thus far we've seen Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Entity, Paranormal Xperiment, and everything else you could think of. Next up is Paranormal Island, which would make a bitchin' show should it be hosted by the lingering specters of Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize!

Vmi Worldwide is heading to Cannes with Marty Murray's new flick Paranormal Island, starring Ben Elliott, Briana Evigan, Lance Henriksen, Randy Wayne, and Sarah Karges.
Synopsis
When three college kids take a summer job, it’s a chance of a lifetime to bartend at a bar in the middle of a lake. The bar has been around for over a hundred years and is presumed by many locals to be haunted after the owner killed himself many years before. Unfortunately, they miss the last boat off the island and are stuck trying to find a way off. As darkness falls, they quickly realize...

Just in case anyone forgot, production company The Asylum are the masterminds behind SyFy’s most recent cultural phenomenon, Sharknado. You know, that creature feature about a tornado filled with sharks? I’ve inserted the above image to jog your memory just in case you forgot about all the chainsaw fighting action, and now I’m sure you’re all chomping at the bit just thinking about how The Asylum can bring their unmatched cinematic prowess to the ever-popular zombie genre. One can only assume we’ll be treated to another bit of episodic zombie brilliance, amassing viewing numbers comparable to The Walking Dead – no?
Seriously SyFy, why do you keep these guys in business? In an effort to let The Asylum get their schlocky paws on another popular genre, SyFy has ordered 13 episodes of a show titled Z Nation, a zombie action thriller “set three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country.

The headlines and articles back in summer 1999 said that the film had changed cinema forever. They made extravagant claims that the internet had now been used to such a degree that the marketing and distribution of films would never be the same again. This may have been premature, what these journalists didn’t quite grasp was that the majority of citizens with a connection to the internet were still on slow dial-up connections, and this made watching trailers or downloading porn a lengthy night’s chore at best.
The film that was causing all of the hoopla was none other than Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick’s The Blair Witch Project, although not the first ever in the sub-genre now known as ‘found footage’, it turned out to be the most memorable and acclaimed. There can only be one Hobbit movie. Even though there will be three. You know what we mean.
If there's a potentially profitable movie on its way in Hollywood, good money says that a low-budget knock-off is also in the works. For instance, for almost every Paranormal Activity movie, there's a Paranormal Entity, a straight-to-dvd franchise that has already released its third installment: Paranormal Entity 3: The Exorcism Tapes, aka Anneliese: The Exorcist Tapes. The movie is actually based on the same story used for 2005's The Exorcism of Emily Rose and 2006's Requiem but released under the Paranormal Entity name in the U.K. because, well, trying to sound like several movies is more profitable than trying to sound like one.
One of the production companies responsible for these "mockbusters" is The Asylum, though their latest production, Age of the Hobbits, drew ire from Warner Bros. who filed an injunction against the movie.

If you've ever been walking down the movie aisle of a store and been confused as to why there were movies like Transmorphers, Paranormal Entity, or Titanic II on the shelves, the answer is The Asylum. It's a production company that specializes in so-called "mockbusters", straight to dvd rip-offs of major blockbuster films. Many wondered exactly how they could get away with it, but it turns out that now they aren't. They were forced to rename American Battleship, and now they are no longer allowed to call their newest film Age of the Hobbits.

Paranormal Entity. Snakes on a Train. The Da Vinci Treasure. These are some of the more notable movies that have come from the dubious production company Global Asylum. As you can gather from their titles, Asylum is a maker of mockbusters, low-budget straight-to-dvd features that essentially piggyback off the fandemonium surrounded movies like Paranormal Activity, Snakes on a Plane or The Da Vinci Code. The Asylum is chief among these rip-off moviemakers, but when they tried to ride the coat tails of Warner Bros.' The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with the intended release of Age of the Hobbits they got shot down. Deadline reports Warner Bros., along with New Line Cinema, MGM and producer Saul Zaentz, have succeeded in winning their case to get a temporary restraining order against the mockbuster, pleading to federal judge Philip Gutierrez that Asylum purposely chose the same release week for their straight-to-dvd release...

One hobbit will rule them all—for now, at least. A California federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order barring the release of Age of the Hobbits, a low-budget straight-to-video release from an independent film production company called The Asylum that was slated for release on Tuesday, just days before the opening of director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Warner Bros., New Line, MGM, and Hobbit producer Saul Zaentz filed suit against The Asylum last month, charging that the company was trying to infringe on its copyrights and confuse consumers with its film.

It's already had knockoffs like Paranormal Entity, and soon will even have an official, Latin-themed spin-off, so it was only a matter of time before Paranormal Activity was privy to its own spoof franchise. In this case, it comes from a horror movie-spoof regular: Marlon Wayans. The cocreator of Scary Movie not only stars in but wrote the simply titled A Haunted House, which has just unveiled its first trailer. And, as a fan of both the Pa franchise and the first Scary Movie, it looks... well, it looks like a Marlon Wayans spoof movie. Take pop-culture phenomenon, inject a bunch of caricatures into it. It's not cinematic brain surgery (then again, neither is the series it's spoofing). That's not exactly a complaint or a compliment, either. A Haunted House just...

The contest, which celebrates the company’s first theatrical film, #Holdyourbreath, will feature daily prizes of movie tickets and DVDs, with a grand prize of a non-speaking role in an upcoming Asylum film. And that can only mean one thing – falling victim to one of the studio's legendary monsters, disasters or other mayhem.

Director: Joseph J. Lawson. Review: Adam Wing. ‘The Asylum presents’ is a headline that sends shivers down the spine of film fans the world over. Responsible for cinematic atrocities (or mockbusters as they’ve come to be known) like Paranormal Entity and Snakes on a Train, The Asylum has been churning out direct-to-video masterpieces for the past 15 years. It’s probably best known (in my world at least) for giving 80s pop stars Debbie Gibson and Tiffany a new lease of life, and reminding me once and for all why nostalgia is best left in the past. But films like Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus are sure to stand the test of time – unless of course it’s quality entertainment you’re after. In which case, you might want to give War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave a wide berth. Joseph J. Lawson leads the charge on this one,...

Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies Review (dir Richard Schenkman, 2012)
I have to admit something. I’ve never been a fan of The Asylum or their mockbusters.
When they release a flick like Titanic II or Paranormal Entity to coincide with a bigger release, to me it comes off as cheap and parasitic, something right down there with porn titles.
I also have to admit something else, up until recently, I’ve never watched an Asylum title. I completely based my opinion on just looking at the DVD covers and my film snobbish personality. To sum up, I’m a jerk and a snob.
That’s not to say that I was wrong about The Asylum. I don’t know how much merit there is in titles like 2 Headed Shark Attack or I Am Omega, but after watching Richard Schenkman’s Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies, I’m...

I’m sure most diehard fans of horror are familiar with The Asylum Production Company: they are after all responsible for some of the most outrageous, cheesy, and unintentionally films to hit the tube. Need a refresher on some of their… unique offerings? How about flicks like Mega Piranha and Two-Headed Shark Attack, just for starters? #Holdyourbreath was directed by Jared Cohn who works from a script crafted by Geoff Meed. Katrina Bowden (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), Randy Wayne (Ghost Town), Erin Marie Hogan (Paranormal Entity), Devanny Pinn (VIViD) and Gerald Webb (Zombie Apocalypse) star.

A couple of days ago we broke the news that The Asylum was readying its first theatrical feature. Well, it's still happening; only now it has a bit of a different title. That's right, kids! Don't Hold Your Breath has become Hold Your Breath.
Also some new casting news has come our way for the flick: Joining “30 Rock” beauty Katrina Bowden, Randy Wayne and Gerald Webb will be none other than ... wait for it ... wait ... for ... it .... Erin Marie Hogan, who's pictured below in the largest image we could possibly find of her. The star of Paranormal Entity began her career at the age of three when she constructed a stage from cardboard building blocks in her pre-school classroom and directed her classmates in a "performance." She started her formal training when she enrolled in the Ballet Conservatory at age 5. She continued with voice, dance and theater instruction throughout her school years.

Well this is somewhat unexpected, and yet it's also been a long time coming. By now most movie fans are familiar with The Asylum, a low budget production company that has made a name for themselves by putting out direct-to-video rip-offs of popular Hollywood blockbusters (often referred to as "mockbusters"). Some of their not-so-acclaimed films include Transmorphers, Snakes on a Train, Paranormal Entity and Battle of Los Angeles, and they are usually released just prior to the Hollywood equivalent, creating confusion at video rental stores and on Netflix. Up until now, most studios have not really paid much attention to these atrocities, assuming that most consumers are smart enough to be able to tell them apart. This week, however, Universal Pictures has finally taken up arms against them, slapping them with a lawsuit over their upcoming Battleship clone, entitled American Battleship. According to TMZ, Universal has filed a lawsuit claiming...

The inmates at The Asylum must be in an extraterrestrial sort of mood of late what with their American Battleship mockbustering the blockbuster Battleship and the announcement of their newest found footage flick Alien Origins.
Let’s start with the just announced Alien Origins. Ever since the mockbuster Paranormal Entity, The Asylum has released a slew of found footage flicks with supernatural leanings. This one will mark the company's first foray into found footage aliens.
Synopsis:
Recently discovered footage from a lost military expedition exposes a horrifying truth about the genesis of life on earth.
That’s all we know at the moment. No cast or crew listings because, obviously, it is 100% legitimate found footage as is the case with all of their found footage movies, and the fact that I’ve received emails from two actresses I’ve seen die in some of these past films was clearly a...

Look, I know Oren Peli is really "hot" right now.
He's got that TV show no one I know watches, The River, which is found footage and vaguely mysterious horror, plus he's got this new film Chernobyl Diaries, also found footage and horror-y, which are both just like his found footage horror film Paranormal Activity. This guy's realllly milking that lucky strike, isn't he? I'm probably going to run into him at some backyard BBQ or Screamfest screening someday soon and he'll be standing there with Max Landis, and once they hear my name, they'll scoff and say, "Oh, that bitch? She didn't say very nice things about us like everyone else did!" and I won't get invited to the afterparty.
But to do otherwise would be to lie to you, my readers. Besides, I don't like parties much anymore as they are only fun when you are an alcoholic.

Oren Peli made the first Paranormal Activity for roughly the cost of a new car. It went on to rack up over $100,000,000 million at the box office. When you've experienced that kind of phenomenal success, no one would blame you for taking a break. Just sit back, enjoy your life, and keep cashing residual checks. Oren Peli hasn't done that. Though he has yet to direct anything new, he's been busy producing an impressive slate projects, including all of the Pa sequels, Insidious, and ABC's new show The River. And now we can take a look at his latest pet project, the quietly produced Chernobyl Diaries [via Coming Soon]. The Bradley Parker-directed project is actually based off of a script by the duo that wrote the Asylum-produced Pa knockoff, Paranormal Entity, which is...

Are found footage movies a cheap-to-make fad, or are they a natural extension of classic storytelling? Here’s Ryan’s view of a divisive genre…
The finest storytellers are confidence tricksters. It’s their ability to convince us that what they’re telling us is real that makes their tall tales so engrossing – they blur the lines between fiction and reality, to the point where are brains struggle to see the join between one and the other.
This is why so many novels and short stories were written in the first person, or incorporated real-world events: their writers wanted to convince their readers that what they were reading was fact, even as the stories span off into unreality. Robinson Crusoe was written by Daniel Defoe as a first-person account of a castaway. Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels was written in the style of a traveller’s work of non-fiction,...

Those inmates running The Asylum stopped taking their medication long enough to choose their next target, and it's a good one.
In a few weeks, The Asylum starts production on Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, an "homage" to the still-in-production Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter from director Timur Bekmambetov.
As you know, we're big fans of The Asylum, who are essentially the Weird Al of film production houses. They take on big-time, legitimate blockbusters or proven moneymakers and grind out a version with a slightly altered title and a batshit crazy story (examples include the Thor knockoff Almighty Thor and the Paranormal Activity knockoff Paranormal Entity).
Of course, this time, the movie being mocked already has a batshit crazy story, so it will be interesting to see how insane Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies turns out. The official synopsis is actually pretty tame as these things go: "While the brutal Civil War rages on,...

Pick(S) Of The Week
The Woman (DVD/Blu-ray)
When lawyer and proud family man Chris Cleek (Sean Bridgers – True Blood, Deadwood) stumbles across a wild, feral woman (Pollyanna McIntosh – Exam, Burke and Hare) bathing in a woodland stream near his isolated country home, he makes a decision that will dramatically change both their lives. Capturing her, Chris chains The Woman up in the fruit cellar below his house, intending to tame and civilize her. But when the task at hand proves to be more difficult than first imagined, he sets in motion a collision course for a brutal showdown between...

Here is your early warning that The Asylum will be trying to capitalize on another blockbuster release. This time Darren Lynn Bousman's 11-11-11 is being clearly copied to swindle wayward buyers out of their hard earned dollars. The Asylum's doppelganger this time is 11/11/11 and unbelievably, they have another title copying Bousman's film called 11/1/11. Notice the removal of one digit here folks. All three films involve themes of a spiritual apocalypse, with The Asylum's version much lower budgeted.
This reviewer would love to interview someone at The Asylum to find out how well these copies perform financially. Apparently they are successful as this film production and distribution company has created dozens of films that copy blockbustes. To test your film knowledge, try to identify the films copied in the following titles: Battle of Los Angeles, Paranormal Entity, Transmorphers, Titanic II, The Terminators and The Day the Earth Stopped. How well did yo do?...

The Asylum has actually been on a roll lately with the wonderfully ludicrous 2012: Ice Age and the surprisingly decent Born Bad. Will the streak continue with a 3D ghost flick, more monster sharks, and a mockbuster with the exact same title as its theatrical counterpart?
We begin with A Haunting in Salem 3D, the latest 3D haunted house movie from The Asylum following 2009’s Haunting of Winchester House, a film I found to be as boring as its 3D was useless. Hopefully they improved things in both categories.
When the new sheriff of Salem, Massachusetts discovers that he is the victim of a centuries-old curse, he must protect his family from the vengeful ghosts that torment his home.
Paranormal Entity and Titanic II helmer Shane Van Dyke directs Bill Oberst, Jr., Courtney Abbiati, Jenna Stone, and Nicholas Harsin from a script by H. Perry Horton.

Even though it's Sunday, that's not stopping a few tidbits of news from creeping online, including this latest story about The Watching Hour, a new spec script from a pair of writers who are apparently the grandsons of Dick Van Dyke.
Per Deadline New Line closed a deal Friday night for The Watching Hour, a horror film written by Carey and Shane Van Dyke that will be produced by Mary Parent and Michael Connolly of Mad Hatter Entertainment. The spec's described as a home invasion film, only with aliens.
If the name Shane Van Dyke sounds at all familiar to you, it's because he cut his filmmaking teeth by helping to bring us the mockbusters Paranormal Entity, Titanic II, and Transmorphers: Fall of Man. Good to see that he escaped from The Asylum.

There is a fine line between effervescent genius and outright insanity and on that line stands The Asylum, finest purveyors of minor classics of rip off cinema whose works feature such titles as Transmorphers and Paranormal Entity.
In this age of the ironic hurrah and the high appetite for bad movies sated by the bigger budget affairs of the Hollywood Studios it makes complete sense that these mockbusters make money.
And you can’t say they don’t plan well. You've seen them in the video store and lurking around the corner of your Netflix queue. Familarly-named movies that seem to be design to cash in on a better known entity. But at this point, the direct-to-video cash-in is a time-honored tradition: for every Transformers, there's a Transmorphers, for every Paranormal Activity, there's a Paranormal Entity. And now we've got a two-fer: a gay themed Twilight-esque thriller called Vampire Boys. The acting is a bit...ripe but honestly, is it that much worse than the real Twilight?...

Los Angeles isn't just a great place to live, it's home to the movie industry. So why, asks John Patterson, do so many film-makers keep blowing it up?
Does any city on the planet suffer from a more debilitating case of municipal self-loathing than Los Angeles?
I only ask because La, the city I live in and love beyond all reason, is, by some considerable measure, the world-class megalopolis most often destroyed, nuked, alien-invaded, bombed-flat, depopulated, dystopianised or demonised in the movies. When film-makers set out to do in their own metropolis, and expend on the task such degrees of wild-eyed, palm-rubbing glee, you have to wonder why they ever bothered to move here in the first place.
They're at it again this week, with three movies: all of which are at heart exactly the same. The flagship of the trio is Battle: Los Angeles, which means it's the one with the biggest budget.

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.

I'll start by being honest about this movie: It was not worth the hype. I saw it at home, instead of in the theater, which was what I believe to be the mistake. I was bored throughout the movie, and nothing exciting happened until the end. I also watched it with my roommates, so they were a distraction. This is a movie that is meant to be seen in the theater, or alone. I watched the mini movie, Paranormal Entity, by myself. I felt that it was better, but as I said, I watched it alone, with no distractions. The first movie is centered around a young couple who live together. They...

The USS Titanic II is a luxury cruise liner which despite its vintage look supposedly has state of the art mechanics inside (although these seem pretty inept when the predictable iceberg hits). The ship was built by Hayden Walsh (Shane Van Dyke – grandson of Dick), an arrogant, wealthy and privileged playboy.
Now, two questions/exclamations probably come to mind from anyone who hears of the existence of the film Titanic II and the premise of the film, that someone has built a Titanic II.
