The "storyline" on IMDB is inaccurate
markfranh9 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Storyline at the top of the description for this series (as of when I'm writing this review in February 2023) is really grossly misleading. It currently says:

"Judge Claire Delval discovers that her father, Simon Delval, is involved in the corruption case she has been investigating for years. Forced to resign, his place in the Francophone Liberal Party is coveted by the discreet Mark Van Dyck."

It's not that it's wrong, it's that it really isn't what the story is about.

It's about an investigation into a brutal gang rape with that rape being shown mid way through the first episode in considerable detail.

The investigation judge, Claire Delval takes it upon herself to investigate the rape after being forced to step down from the corruption case because of her father's involvement.

Meanwhile, the ambitious politicial, Mark VAn Dyck, is after Simon Delval's job after he resigns because of the corruption case. However, the key backdrop to this is that Van Dyck witnessed the rape in the carpark, felt he couldn't intervene because it was a gang rape and it would have been him against 7 or so young men, so instead he filmed it and anonymously posts the film on the internet.

The series follows Duval's investigation into the rape in parallel with Van Dyck trying to pursue his political ambitions while not being exposed as the individual who saw the rape but did nothing.

Because of the violence in the first episode (i.e. The rape scene) and a brutal attack at the end of episode 2, we only watched the first two episodes before deciding it wasn't for us. If the "Storyline" at the top of the IMDB page had been accurate, we would have not even bothered starting it as it's not our kind of series.

We did chase down a description of the series elsewhere on the internet and confirmed it really is entirely about the rape and little to do with the corruption story and that's why we gave up.

It might appeal to others but before starting to view it, please be aware of what the story is actually about and ignore the current "Storyline" description which doesn't accurately portray the events in the series.

Engaging Belgian drama
jeffpsy29 September 2023
Pandora (Pandore in French), is a surprisingly engaging Belgian political/police procedural. At its core the series explores how its characters react after the gang rape of a female political activist.

The namesake of the show, Pandora, was the woman in Greek mythology who unleashed sin, evil and chaos on the world. In keeping with that theme, the show centers around the many lies, ethical lapses and misdeeds that even good people make when they are stressed, overwhelmed and fearful of failure.

The acting is good, the characters are three-dimensional, and the dialogue is very well written. Plus, it offers a nice look at the European criminal justice system, in which "judges" go out and investigate the crime, and oversee the collection of evidence. I was pleased to see that the show has already been greenlighted for a second season, which should be in 2024. If you like detective dramas, give this one a try.

Excellent drama from Belgium!

Pandore has all the elements of a fine dramatic series. I really enjoy political intrigue and this Belgian production hit all the right notes. You'll root for the good guys and hope the bad guys go down. All the performers were great and the story is first rate.

The main topics are subjects that are attention getters in every country. Having spent my career in politics, the story was exciting for me all the way through. It was thoroughly enjoyable. The twists and turns in the script kept my interest all the way through. I hope to see more series from the same director. I loved Pandore and I'm sure you will, too.

Superbly acted and produced drama, subtle twists,
malcolmcochran1 May 2024
Shakespeare would have been proud of this. The story line moves across several concepts, nicely up to date. Even the introductory music and cartoons are clever. But it is the way each idea gets examined or tested and, moreover, the timing of each piece of action that is impressive.

The two main characters sink steadily in their respective lives, one obsessively following her instinct and ruining her career in the process; the other toughing out increasing missteps but losing a family.

On top, throughout, there is the fight for freedom for females from male misbehaviour. This is shown in a number of ways throughout the show. And, understated, low-grade political ineptness bordering on corruption.

At the beginning, an offender is freed and one wonders if the victim will be further attacked - move on! Punches are neither pulled nor glorified: a horrific moment is marvellously shown "endlessly" in the rear view mirror of a car; the beautiful assistant in love with the politician describes her possible future.

I do agree with another commentator that the "rescuing a girl in jail" by pressuring a Saudi Prince is totally unbelievable - ridiculous - the writers should have found another way.

Loose ends
laduqesa22 October 2023
I was really liking this but started getting frustrated about plots and characters that were simply dropped. One of the attackers that Judge Delval was pursuing had been released because of a conspiracy of silence. When she found evidence to convict, the whole thing was dropped, we didn't see an arrest or a trial. I actually wonder if the programmes were an hour long and had been chopped down to forty five minutes to fit schedules. There were several occasions when the action cut to a different scene but the previous characters were clearly going to say something to each other.

I didn't believe in Sasha's sudden employment in the media industry or later in politics either. Her part in the negotiations with the KSA was pretty ridiculous - as a newbie, she would never have had the connections to put the arrogant prince in his place.

Of the ten épisodes, number eight dragged and added little to the plot. The final two were not really believable. The actions didn't fit the personality of the judge and I found her obsession wearying. Neither did I think her statement in the corruption trial was credible. She was, after all, the judge who'd got the defendants summonsed.

I enjoyed this, but there were such serious flaws that I can't give more than six stars.

Box full of creaky secrets
gurumaggie2 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It's a really good start for this show but it's clouded by too many plots and sub plots.

The lead male actor was in the Break a cracking show better than this to be honest, about a cop who has a breakdown and a young daughter he is a fine actor, they all are but the middle drags.

The last few episodes are just too unbelievably scripted for my liking.

The frankly ludicrous plot involves a judge ruining every serious relationship in her life getting demoted to a cupboard as a workspace.

Spoilers ahead

The ending was weaker than a day old puppy and made as much sense, it was disappointing to say the least.
