The game's title comes from the autobiography 'Rogue Warrior', which is written by the video game's protagonist, Richard Marcinko. However, the plot of the video game is entirely fictional. Marcinko himself is a real-life Navy SEAL that served from the Vietnam War up until the late 1980s. He was also the creator of SEAL Team Six, which was established in 1980.
The game was initially announced in 2006 as "Rogue Warrior: Black Razor", a first person tactical shooter, developed by Zombie Studios. After a few years, the game later resurfaced in 2009, instead now developed by Rebellion Developments.
