''Are you saying the Pope is a fish?''
Rabical-912 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The penultimate 'Laugh??? I Nearly Paid My Licence Fee' episode starts off with Ted Todgers appearing before the studio audience telling some naff jokes before delivering linking material to the next sketch

In the following sketch, Robbie Coltrane does a hilarious spoof of Captain Oates who, whilst stranded in a blizzard irritates his comrades by telling a lame joke ( ''What's the difference between a snowman and a snowwoman?'' ''Snowballs!'' ) and singing 'In The Bleak Midwinter'!

A 'Commando' comic strip style sketch featuring the cast as soldiers falls rather flat and also features some racist language which would not sit well with modern audiences these days.

The Nimmons have reanimated in hopes to continue their mission in seizing control of the earth however their mission is deemed too dangerous and they are forced by their master to not only abandon their mission but to terminate themselves with the aid of 'the sacred poison', which happens to be a jar of baby beetroots!

'The Master Of Dundriech' does not appear this week other than a voice on an answering machine telling a caller: ''I'm am not available as I am away grinding the faces of the poor, so leave your message and bugger off!''

Jack Beesley the troublemaking neighbour appears again this time to phone his neighbour to inform him that his wife's friend's tax disc has expired ''he arrived soon after you left for work but left in a hurry before you got home, you just missed him!''. He then laughs devilishly upon hanging up the phone, delighted at having stirred up trouble between his neighbours by exposing the wife's adultery!

A musical item entitled 'Who Gets The Custody?' sees a young couple in a divorce courtroom arguing over custody of their children and over entitlement of possessions. However, the court case overruns and the couple are forced to surrender all assets to cover court costs!

Bob the fascist appears with his silent friend Alec in a sketch with the pair acting as jury members. Bob seems to think hanging should be brought back as punishment for criminals: ''Ours is not to reason why!'' he says :''ours is to observe the facts, weigh up the evidence and find the b*****d guilty!''.

Mason Boyne makes his final appearance here in what is his best sketch yet. Here Mason tells his wife Morag that his hatred of the Papal order is based entirely on historical facts: ''Did you know that Adolf Hitler was a Catholic?'' he tells Morag ''And so was Mussolini, Atilla The Hun, Dracula and that big shark who ate all those people in 'Jaws'!''.

Another fun edition brimming with some truly hilarious sketches ( the Ted Todgers ones excepted! ). The death of Robbie Coltrane is still hard to take in and I felt somewhat emotional watching this episode the other day in the knowledge that the great man is no longer with us. To date, Ron Bain and Louise Gold are the only surviving cast members.

Funniest sketch - has to be the Mason Boyne sketch. The 'Jaws' reference made he howl. The moment at the end of the sketch where he kissed the portrait of the infamous Reverend Ian Paisley ( who Coltrane himself imitated in the hilarious New Year's Eve show '81 Take 2' ) attracted a lot of criticism at the time. Some people are so thin skinned, aren't they?
