61st in the charts with 7.6 million viewers.
Although given a title in listings magazines of "Paul Daniels: Live at Hallowe'en", this edition was only titled "Paul Daniels" onscreen as usual.
Perhaps due to the controversy of the previous years' Live at Hallowe'en 87 (1987), this Halloween Special was pushed even further past the watershed, screened in a 10:10pm timeslot.
While the series was generally a primetime show for all of the family, the Halloween Specials went a little further than usual, including this edition ending with Paul apparently burnt to death. However, unlike the previous years' special, where viewers had to wait after the programme to find out Paul was still alive, in this edition he's shown waving to the camera before the end credits.
