Kenneth tries to organize a Secret Santa Fun Swap, but not without resistance from some of the staff members. Meanwhile, Liz battles the task of buying a gift that's good enough for Jack, and Jenna is horrified at the prospect of sharing her annual Christmas solo.—NBC Publicity
- Open with Cerie asking Liz about her Christmas list. When she gets to Jack, Liz mentions that she's never exchanged gifts with Jack in four years of working with him.
Jack tells Liz he needs to set up an account on "YouFace," a social networking site GE has recently acquired. Jonathan takes his profile picture, or phollo (photo hello). Jack agrees to exchange gifts with Liz, but will not discuss potential ideas beforehand.
Pete is mad Jenna won't chip in for a gift for the cleaning ladies. He tells Danny (the new guy who hasn't appeared in an episode in two weeks) he wishes there was a way to get her back.
Jack tells Liz and Cerie he's been contacted on YouFace by Nancy Donovan, an old crush of his from Boston. He hasn't seen her in 25 years but she wants to touch base with Jack when she's in town to pick up her sons. Cerie helps him navigate the site and they determine Nancy might be having trouble in her marriage. Recently Nancy has changed her status from "married" to "working on it."
Lutz warns the rest of the guy that Kenneth is working on his Secret Santa Fun Swap. We flash back to last year and see how unbelievably complicated the rules are. When Kenneth comes into the office, Frank, Toofer and Lutz tell him they have become Verdukians and their new religion does not celebrate Christmas. Verdukians, they tell him, believe in the healing powers of root beer.
Jonathan tells Liz that Jack is the best gift-giver in the world, having once gotten his sister out of a North Korean jail.
Jack pulls Liz into his office and introduces her to Nancy (Julianne Moore). She says her husband "couldn't make it." They were in a high school play together and seem to be getting along fantastically.
Kenneth tells Tracy he is trying to recognize all religions. Tracy is suspicious. Danny walks by and sings a Christmas song. He is a fantastic singer and Pete happens to hear. Pete's idea is to have Danny replace Jenna on next week's Christmas solo as payback. Danny doesn't like the idea of stealing her thunder, and suggests a duet. Pete likes that idea even better, realizing how much Jenna will hate sharing the spotlight.
Nancy tells Jack she's married to an Irish roofer who is "not reliable." She agrees to let him take her to a nice restaurant. Jack references the fact they kissed (sans tongues) regularly in the high school play.
Jenna is not pleased when Danny tells her about the duet. She is even less happy when she hears how good of a singer he is, and blood starts coming out of one of her nostrils (a rage stroke).
When he hears about the Verdukian "Night of Mouth Pleasures," Tracy tells Kenneth the guys made the religion up to get out of Secret Santa. Tracy says organized religion is nothing but a bunch of rules to manipulate people. This causes Kenneth to question the existence of God.
Cerie shows Jack that Nancy has cropped him out of pictures she's posted on YouFace. She says this is a good thing, that she must not want her husband to see Jack. Another good sign is that Nancy has changed her status from "working on it" to "weirdsys." "O.M.F.G.," Jack says.
Liz is upset her first gift for Jack was a bust. Jack suggests they get each other creative gifts and not spend any money. Liz asks Jack what his expectations are with Nancy. He's not sure.
After Jenna tried to pay a guy to hide in Danny's dressing room and punch him in the throat, Danny asks what's going on. She says the only aspect of Christmas she ever liked during a terrible childhood was when she sang carols in department stores while her mother shoplifted. She thinks he's taken that away from her. She leaves the room and it appears Danny has an idea.
When the writers try to tell Kennth they now want to do Secret Santa, he says it's off because he's lost his faith. Kenneth thinks the only way God actually could exist is if they were punished for their lie.
Jack and Nancy go for a walk after dinner. They part ways with both looking as if they want more time together.
The next day Jack tells Liz hes down that Nancy is scheduled to take a train back to Boston in a few hours. Hes now wondering what his life would have been like if hed never left his hometown. For the first time in his life he is homesick. He wished the moment in time could have lasted a little longer.
Danny intentionally sings poorly during the duet with Jenna. Pete seems miserable, but Jenna is overjoyed.
Nancy shows up at the studio. Her train was cancelled and she took the hint and came back for a nightcap and a kiss -- no-tongue, like high school.
Jack gives Liz her gift. It's an announcement of a play she was in during high school, framed in wood from her high school stage. Liz tells him her gift was calling the train station with a bomb threat.
The police come and arrest Frank and Toofer, since Liz made the bomb threat from their phone. Lutz references Verdukianism and the three get a beat-down. "It's a Christmas miracle," Kenneth says.
