Andre Rieu, the Dutch violist, conductor and composer, travels to the German town of Heidelberg with his orchestra. Beneath a clear, starry night sky, the band unleash an array of classical and folk tune. Rieu's looked down upon by international critics – he's too mainstream, too reliant on waltzs, popular Viennese and classical works, they say – but he's also developed a huge international following and has been responsible for introducing many younger generations to classical music. The masses love him; the inteligentsia turn up their noses.
It's an open air event, so the Heidelberg concert has a certain magical vibe about it. The town of Heidelberg is itself stunning, with its romantic buildings, picturesque setting, lazy rivers, mixture of baroque, Gothic and Rennaisance architecture, cobblestone roads, gentle hilltops and ancient churches. Very loosely speaking, architecture movements flow from the Classical era to Medievalism to the Gothic to the Renaissance to the Baroque to the Neoclassical to the 19th century Romantic Movement to Gothical Revivalism and finally to Modernism and onwards. Each of these groups have their own subsets. The town of Heidelberg seems to be a lovely mixture of Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical and Romantic architecture. It's like a Walt Disney town, minus the kitsch.
