These days it’s easy to assume that there are a few dozen excuses that are loaded and ready to be used when it comes to a worst-case scenario, which means a box office failure when talking about a Hollywood feature. Having been released just recently, Babylon was expected to be a widely popular ensemble movie that attempts to encapsulate the Roaring Twenties and the transition from silent to sound films. This was a major shift in Hollywood as many film students should know verbatim since the path from silence to sound had a huge impact on tinsel town given that

There is a fair argument to be made that Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the last true movie stars left in Hollywood. He hasn't a spandex-clad sojourn, family blockbuster, or sequel to his name – unless of course, we count his feature debut in furry alien Dtv fodder Critters III (we don’t). The Titanic star has been making serious bank at the box-office and notching up award-winning roles for three decades now – and it’s not without good reason that he landed a place on our list of the :a[50 Greatest Actors Of All-TIme]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-actors/' }.
Earning his first Oscar nod at just 19, DiCaprio went on to become the defining heartthrob of the 1990s, with swooning turns in Baz Luhrmann’s tragic romantic epic Romeo + Juliet and James Cameron’s, well, tragic romantic epic Titanic. But rather than spend his career in an endless run of...

The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood turned 100 last year — and now the venue is ready for its closeup. Netflix said today that the storied movie palace and birthplace of the red carpet will reopen next month after a three-year renovation and retrofit.
The streamer acquired the Egyptian in 2020 and partnered with the American Cinematheque on a restoration that harks back to the landmark hall’s Roaring Twenties glory. The Egyptian’s grand reopening will be a November 9 screening of David Fincher’s The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender, followed by a Q&a with the filmmaker.
Netflix today also revealed a November 9 release the documentary short Temple of Film: 100 Years of the Egyptian Theatre. Directed by Angus Wall, the film includes interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Rian Johnson, Lynette Howell Taylor, Autumn Durald Arkapaw and the theater’s restoration architect Peyton Hall.

Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart is a heartwarming tale of frontier romance. In the long-running period drama – currently in its 10th season – a young woman named Elizabeth Thatcher moves from the big city to a small town in western Canada, where she falls in love with a local Mountie. But when exactly does the show take place?
‘When Calls the Heart’ takes place in the early 20th century
When Calls the Heart, which is based on a series of historical fiction novels by Janette Oke, takes place in the early part of the 20th century. Specifically, the story begins in 1910, when Elizabeth arrives in the remote northwestern outpost of Hope Valley (then known as Coal Valley). By the time we get to season 10, it’s 1920, as indicated by some glimpses of The Valley Voice newspaper.
Fans are already seeing some new developments in Hope Valley as a new decade dawns.

Fantasia, North America's largest and longest-lived genre film festival, returns in 2023 with an amazing selection of imaginative films from around the world, including a bounty of cinematic treasures for aficionados of anime and manga!
Best known for the world-renowned Dragonball, celebrated Japanese manga creator Akira Toriyama's many other works include the mini-epic Sand Land, a demon-infested, post-apocalyptic screwball romp published in 2000. It portrayed a mysterious desert world where water is the most precious resource, and follows Satan's son Beelzebub and his comrades on a desperate, dangerous quest. Toriyama's countless fans can rejoice because now, a quarter century later, an anime adaptation has further rekindled Sand Land's appeal. Fantasia's crowd can take particular pleasure in this news, because the director is the talented Toshihisa Yokoshima, a deft master of CG animation whose short film Cocolors won a Satoshi Kon Award at the festival in 2017. At first, it looked like Perfect Match would only have heterosexual couples, but that changed. However, it was for a brief moment. Fans talk about Francesca Farago and Kariselle Snow and what kind of bisexual representation they brought to the Netflix show.
Francesca and Kariselle kissed on ‘Perfect Match’
Farago and Snow were close friends on the show. They talked about being bisexual and mostly pursued relationships with men on Perfect Match.
But that changed when Abbey Humphreys entered as an option in the boardroom. Farago chose to go on a date with her, and they bonded over coming from a religious family and coming out.
They coupled up, but Farago made out with Snow in the pool when the cast was swimming. This upset Humphreys, and she communicated that with the Too Hot to Handle alum. Farago claimed she kissed Snow at times, and there is nothing romantic behind it.

There is another fairytale afoot in Hollywood, thanks to Oscar winner Damien Chazelle’s sweeping ode to the rise of talkies.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” co-stars Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt reunite onscreen for “Babylon,” Chazelle’s star-studded take on the pitfalls of fame and the slow-moving tide of change in the film industry. With dreams of reaching stardom, Nellie crosses paths with aging icon Jack Conrad (Pitt), inspired by John Gilbert, Clark Gable, and Douglas Fairbanks.
“Babylon” premieres December 25 with a limited release, followed by a wide release January 6, 2023, making the feature a buzzed-about Oscars contender.

Alligators, snakes, and a coked-out Margot Robbie: The “Babylon” trailer, which screened for audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival, is about to break the internet. The TIFF audience ate up the trailer — so much so, that Bailey showed it a second time.
In it, you see Robbie in a red dress and wild hair hysterically unraveling amid tableaux of Jazz Age bacchanalia. There’s also a drunken Brad Pitt tap-dancing in his underwear. The sizzle is a propulsive series of images that come at you hard and fast, but one standout is breakout actor Diego Calva, who plays a character called Manny Torres, appears to be the lead.
In a conversation with TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, director Damien Chazelle said that the super-sized Hollywood epic, set circa 1920s Los Angeles as silent films transitioned to talkies, isn’t finished. He’s in post, readying for a December 25 Paramount release.

When the teaser trailer for “Downton Abbey: A New Era” premiered last year, it didn’t take the standard route of listing the cast for the film. Instead, the promo elegantly trumpeted the presence of Lord Grantham, Lady Grantham, et al. as though they were real people, with their names in a gilded font befitting the stately Roaring Twenties setting. Fans have spent six seasons and a movie with these characters, and even if they don’t recognize the actor Jim Carter by name, they’ll politely clap their hands in delight when they see “Mr.

Kehlani has dropped a music video for “Up All Night,” a single from their newest full-length album Blue Water Road, which dropped last week.
The clip — much like Kehlani’s music video from Blue Water Road single “Everything” — combines the singer’s retro-tinged sound with vintage aesthetics. The 1997 mob movie, Donnie Brasco, celebrates its 25th anniversary this week. This is almost as long as the real-life title character has been on the run with a half-a-million-dollar contract on his head. Johnny Depp plays Joe Pistone in the movie, an undercover federal cop codenamed “Donnie Brasco.” He gets so deep into the wheels of the Brooklyn operations of the Bonanno crime family that he almost becomes a made man. Donnie is one hit away from getting straightened out, joining the official rank and file of the organization, when the FBI pulls him in from the case. The mere notion that such an embarrassing breach could occur got the Bonannos kicked out of the Five Family ruling hierarchy. It turned out to be fortunate timing when the “Mafia Commission” went down in a federal rap, but at the time, forget about it.

The Dog Days Aren’t Over: Graf Puts a New Coat of Paint on the Weimar Republic
The Weimar Republic, aka the German Republic, which lasted from 1918 to 1933, is one of the most romanticized periods of a cultural renaissance in literature or cinema. Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel (1930) heralded the rise of Marlene Dietrich, while Christopher Isherwood’s experiences resulted in his Berlin Stories (1945), which gave us the penultimate Cabaret (1972). Caroline is a filmmaker, writer, and programmer whose first film, A Feast of Man, is now available on Amazon Prime… You can check out her film production work at Cinema Firmament; visit Screen Slate and her Notebook page for her writing, and Spectacle Theater, where she programs.Caroline takes...
