The recent thriller Buried concerned a man trapped in an underground coffin. Apparently its screenwriter Chris Sparling found that situation just a little too claustrophobic, so his latest effort is largely set in the relatively airy confines of an Atm. Photos: Halloween Gone Wrong: The 10 Least Scary Movies of All Time The scariest experience most viewers have probably had with an automatic teller machine is seeing the balance on their accounts. Not so for the would-be victims in this gimmicky horror film directed by David Brooks. The hapless trio includes nice guy David (Brian Geraghty); Emily (Alice Eve),

In Atm we follow three co-workers who, after leaving a company party together and making a quick stop for some cash, end up in a desperate struggle for survival when an unknown man appears outside an Atm vestibule in the middle of nowhere, threatening their very lives.
Directed by David Brooks, Atm stars Brian Geraghty, Josh Peck and Alice Eve and marks Brooks' first time in the director's chair on a feature film. In anticipation of the movie's release in theaters this Friday, April 6th (Atm is currently available on VOD platforms), Dread Central had the chance to chat with the up-and-coming filmmaker about coming on board the project, the challenges of creating a thriller inside a 10-foot long space for 90 minutes and whether or not there are plans for an Atm 2 yet.

With Rodrigo Cortes‘ Buried receiving excellent reviews since its Sundance premiere, writer Chris Sparling has already set his next script into motion. David Brooks will make his feature debut with Atm and now THR has the initial cast lined up.
Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker), Josh Peck (The Wackness) and Margarita Levieva (Adventureland) have all joined the “Hitchockian” thriller which tells the story of “three co-workers who make a late-night visit to an Atm and end up in a desperate fight for their lives when they become trapped by an unknown man.” That “unknown man” has yet to be cast as the announced trio will all be co-workers.
Buried producer Peter Safran is joining Paul Brooks, who recently did The Haunting in Connecticut for production duties. Check out David Brooks debut short, Gone over at Vimeo.
Atm starts filming late September in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Buried hits theaters Oct. 8th.

At the Sundance Q&A for the first hit of the festival, Buried, writer Chris Sparling was definitely the quietest figure. After all, he wasn't a celebrity like Ryan Reynolds, and he wasn't the director, Rodrigo Cortes, who managed to film a movie set entirely inside a coffin and not bore the audience in the process (read our review of the film here). But Sparling is the one who thought the crazy idea was possible in the first place, and now he's being rewarded with a movie based on his next crazy idea. Variety reports that the Safran Co. and Gold Circle Films have picked up the rights to Atm Sparling's spec script about three people ending up in "a desperate fight for their lives" on a routine trip to the Atm. David Brooks, who made the short "Gone" and is apparently not the New York Times columnist, will direct.

As if it wasn't bad enough that writer Chris Sparling was the catalyst for a movie that will make you (a) never want to travel to Iraq and (b) never want to be anywhere near a wooden box, now he thinks it's okay to make you weary of your money machine. Variety is reporting today that Peter Safran -- producer of Buried -- has picked up Sparling's next spec script Atm, and will produce the film alongside A Haunting in Connecticut's Paul Brooks. Atm follows the story of three co-workers who "-- on a routine stop at an Atm -- unexpectedly end up in a desperate fight for their lives." Fuck me, can't people just go to work anymore. The story of Buried revolves around a truck driver (Ryan Reynolds) who was just doing his job in Iraq when he is kidnapped and buried alive somewhere in the desert. I don't know what happened to Chris Sparling in...

Sounding very similar to how Darren Lynn Bousman's Mother's Day kicks off comes Atm, which centers on three co-workers who -- on a routine stop at an Atm -- unexpectedly end up in a desperate fight for their lives. The Safran Co. and Gold Circle Films picked up the spec script by Buried writer Chris Sparling. David Brooks, who gained fame with his short "Gone", will get behind the camera this fall. Paul Brooks ("A Haunting in Connecticut") will also produce. "Buried," starring Ryan Reynolds, was the first major sale at Sundance with Lionsgate snapping up domestic distribution rights for $3.2 million. Scott Neimeyer, Norm Waitt and Dan Clifton are exec producing "Atm." Safran is also producing actioner "Elephant White," starring Djimon Hounsou, and action-comedy "Flypaper," starring Patrick Dempsey. Paul Brooks is a producer on Warner Bros.' "Life as We Know It," starring Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel.
