Sounds familiar whichever country you live in
alaningle715 January 2022
A maverick reporter tries to expose wrong doing in very high places but the system springs into action to prevent her. It is a very well acted drama which often feels so real it begins to resemble a reconstruction or documentary. The actual corruption is barely covered as most of the series is the reporter played by Ryoko Yonekura trying to unearth the facts and the establishment trying to cover them up. It also shows that it is often the good people with a conscience who suffer whilst the powerful and corrupt seem immune, which if you look at recent history appears to be true.

Good show with hints about ways of life in Japan
apaksoy4 February 2022
Some may find this show a bit simplistic and idealistic but I liked it because it shows how importance is good journalism to a society and, in a different matter, how ways of life in Japan are different. Some differences are just interesting such as how the recruitment process works or how polite people are to each other (sometimes even to annoying degree in my view) and others not so good such as too much resistance to change.

A rewarding drama
wheatley-2023016 February 2022
At its best Netflix entertains while also giving us insight into other cultures and this series is successful on both those fronts. If this drama reflects reality then Japan needs stories that extol investigative journalism, which this certainly does.

A wake up call for those who think politics is irrelevant and can be left to the rich and powerful.

So real, so true

This drama shows the dark side of political world. Not alike traditional/usual Japanese drama, there were no exaggerating facial expressions/actings, the acting performance were natural and real, showed the struggle that deep inside respective characters' heart.

Please do not anticipate that there would be a superhero like journalist who saved the world (this is not Doctor X series!), instead, different charactors who still have conscience strived their best effort to do what they think they should do at the end, even though they know deep down in their heart that the possibility of changing the society/atmosphere is slim.

The courage of the director and performers are greatly appreciated. As the story is based on a highly sensitive political scandal happened in recent years which the big guys are still watching. Bravo.

Politics. Corruption.

Doesn't seem to matter the country. Really enjoyed this foray into Japanese politics at its worse... looks very familiar, sadly. This series is well presented, and well acted. I would be satisfied if this series ends here, but would also likely follow these interesting characters through another season.

Japanese friends are brave...

When I am watching it, I felt so familiar with every plots and every details developed. Ignore the fact I am a Taiwanese. In the end (of E6), I feel Japan is still a nation with hopes. For the performance part, I just curious why so heavy and lots of tears. Still I think it's a great drama.

A depiction of true events that occurred in 2017 in Japan
Nathan78926 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This drama depicts real life events that occurred in 2017 when Shinzo Abe was the Prime Minister of Japan. The drama accurately presents a widely reported scandal involving Akie Abe (the Prime Minister's wife), various members of Japan's Finance Ministry, and Moritomo Gakuen, an ultranationalist operator of schools and strong supporter of Prime Minister Abe.

The fact that Moritomo Gakuen was able to purchase land at 14% the actual market value with the direct involvement of the wife of Prime Minster Abe is the basis of the scandal. There was significant public outcry when additional information surfaced that government documents had been systematically altered to conceal the involvement of Akie Abe and members of the Finance Ministry in the land purchase transaction.

Despite Prime Minister Abe's hollow pledge to fully investigate the allegations of corruption, no key government officials (including himself) were ever prosecuted.

This is another fine performance from Ryoko Yonekura, who plays the tenacious journalist seeking to uncover the truth in the face of near-insurmountable odds.

just has no snap to it

I loved Ryôko in Doctor x and she clearly can act and is beautiful but this didnt do it for me i guess hating the media and know there is no real honest company out there kept me from believing the story which is done well. Has Ryôko ever done anything with a hint of romance, i haven't seen it if she has.

So "The Jornalist" was, in my opinion a very interesting show to watch. The acting and script were great. It never got boring and always had a spice to it. I really enjoyed watching this show.
