The story is not up to it: too stereotyped
leohsanchez24 August 2021
It is very hard to write an objetive opinion considering the plot, but I will try.

This show was increidible well produced: superb cast, very well filmed, and even the script. If you could judge the show on that basis, it is top material. Now... the story is way too stereotyped and does not reflect, AT ALL, the political reality of the country, or even the political partys the show is representing. It is a too obvious propaganda, a very flat way to represent the political complexity of religion and politics. Too simplistic, too exagereted and clearly the story was tell in a way to be satifying to a very narrow-minded audience. Sometimes even I found myself, being pollitically against those religious-pollitical movements, stunished because of the incredible bias included in the story. A very old fashioned way to represent "evil". Once again, it is very easy to watch which is something not good at all in a political show, which I think should raise a few questions in our minds. This is just a show to justify tje political believes of some.

Hooked
rosgembrun26 September 2021
I got hooked because I thought, correctly, that it was going to be about fraud and corruption. And, mistakenly, that it was based of real events.

No matter. The actors are excellent. Some of the elements, like the children, the boys, are not presented in way that you can see the connection to the main plot. However, towards the end their importance becomes clear. Also, one whole episode is a retelling of the previous episode. Nothing new is learned or added. That whole episode could have been left out entirely.

Excellent cast. I liked it.

Not easy to rate this show...

Warning: Spoilers
Because everything was left open, and was bad! I hated the end... I really hope will be a second season to solve all the mess provoked by Emilio Vázquez Pena, a sick person with twisted mind. Show was a bit slow though.... I really look forward to see Nancy Dupláa winning a case against this sick corruption. Problem is, when second season takes too long to come, magic is gone. Sad.

Como argentino, me mata escribir esto. Horrible. Temporada 1
grondonamanu31 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers

3) ALGUNAS actuaciones, no todas.

No entiendo.

Interesting political / religious thriller
abisio6 September 2021
The assassination an Argentina 's candidate for President candidate force his Vice (a famous Pastor ) to take his place; but there are lots of obscure and political interests within everybody involved or related.

This Argentina Netflix production has very good production values and a very interesting group of actors.

Diego Peretti excels as the conflicted Pastor and Mercedez Moran as his possessive controlling wife. Joaquin Furriel is frightening as the person behind the curtains. The rest of the cast. Plays their parts quite realistically too.

Some pacing issues are perhaps the bigger problem; most of them monologues for Peretti to shine which he does. I hope the second season comes fast.

Like a Latin American prequel to The Handmaid's Tale.
danybur19 August 2021
Summary

"Success is proof of the love that God feels for each one of us"

This phrase, said by one of his characters, could be the terrible synthesis of this series. As in a sort of prequel to The Handmaid's Tale (the series and the book) or the novel Submission, by Michel Houellebecq, we are facing a dystopia that raises the possible arrival of a religious leader to a Latin American government. A scenario where in this case the neoliberal establishment closes ranks with religious fundamentalism; two nightmares made one

Review

In the act of presentation of the presidential formula of a coalition headed by a neoliberal candidate for president and a vice who is the leader of the most powerful evangelical church in Argentina, the presidential candidate is assassinated. This is the trigger for a series that investigates the motives for the murder and the plot of interests behind that coalition.

"Success is proof of the love that God feels for each one of us"

Put into the mouth of an important character, this phrase is a powerful synthesis of this ambitious dystopia by Marcelo Piñeyro and Claudia Piñeiro, a political thriller that puts the lens more on the religious leg of the coalition than on that of its neoliberal partners and that, by way of advance, I will say that it goes from less to more.

The kingdom is not a series for the impatient; it goes from less to more. It is ambitious and you have to give time to the development of its subplots and its characters, to better understand them, their links and what they represent, overcoming the initial negative feeling of being in front of a fragmentary structure and characters apparently without psychological thickness that act as mere chess pieces from a script, as in many Spanish police officers. Fortunately, the feeling is dissipating as the chapters go by.

Characters

The character gallery is extensive. In the first place, the family that commands the Church of Light, made up of Pastor Emilio Vázquez Pena (Diego Peretti) and his wife Pastora Elena (the true leader of the congregation, led by Mercedes Morán) and the three children of the marriage, with different functions in its structure: Magdalena (Victoria Almeida), Pablo (Patricio Aramburu) and Ana (Vera Spinetta) who are joined by Oscar, the husband of the first (Alfonso Tort). The evangelical team is joined by Julio Clamens (Chino Darín), a kind of legal representative of the Church and Emilio's trusted person, and two people in charge of a children's and youth home supported by the Church: Tadeo (Peter Lanzani) and Remigio (Nicolás García Hume ) and one of the inmates of the home.

On the other hand, we will meet Rubén Osorio (Joaquín Furriel), an obscure and unscrupulous political operator, campaign manager, and political owner of the coalition.

Finally (and without exhausting the list), the legal leg of the story has the prosecutor Roberta Candia, in charge of the murder investigation (Nancy Dupláa), her assistant Ramiro (Santiago Korovsky) and the Attorney General (Alejandro Awada ).

In this gallery there are rebellious sons and daughters of rich families, millionaire politicians, corrupt religious, committed religious, upright officials, corrupt officials, and unscrupulous or novice operators.

The structure of the plot

The structure is fragmentary. The timeline that begins with the murder alternates with flashbacks that describe the history of some characters and the way they met and bonded. Therefore, the protagonism of the characters registers variations throughout the chapters and it is necessary to be patient to tie the ends of a plot that at the beginning is fragmentary, dispersed and generates many questions. This causes several characters to be psychologically flat at first and take a long time to take on dramatic thickness (although not all of them achieve it).

The script and the dialogs

The script, with its ingenious puzzle structure, brings together common ingredients and characters in political thrillers, but the combination of political and religious factors gives it an original specificity. On the other hand, the identity of the murderer is known almost from the beginning, so the enigma will be centered on his motives.

On the other hand, I consider that the main flaw of the series is its dialogues, which in many cases are routine, without flight, as well-listened to. They reinforce the initial sensation of being before characters without thickness that act as mere chess pieces of a script, as it happens in many Spanish crime series. Fortunately, the feeling is dissipating as the chapters go by.

The characters speak clearly "in porteño", but localisms and swear words are avoided. Some would have been useful to reinforce the dialogues.

The performances

In relation to what I pointed out above, in the first half of the series the actors and actresses do what they can with these dialogues and with that fragmentary structure that delays the development and growth of their characters and of empathy towards them on the part of the viewer.

That said, there are performances that are more prominent than others. The soulless and cold pastor Elena is carried out with great solvency by Mercedes Morán; You have to even look at how she stands and how she walks, how she behaves in public and how in private. Peretti's performance is uneven; he does best on the sinister side. The layers of the villain incarnated by Furriel are being very well revealed by the actor, in one of the fastest growing characters. Chino Darín is more than just a pretty face and Vera Spinetta needs to improve some diction problems. Nancy Dupláa gives her prosecutor a suitable gray tone, trying to strip her of heroism. Lanzani and García Hume are noteworthy, who get along very well with their characters.

All the secondary ones are very good. Almeida and Tort compose a very timely comic relief in a series that is almost completely devoid of humor.

Religion, politics and ideology

The kingdom tries to reflect two faces of evangelism: on the one hand, the institutional one, linked to business and in part to political ambition as a way of expanding the scope of its dogmas on society. You do not see a development regarding the origin of that money, although you do see its management; the Pena family is a clan and the Church of Light is a true family business. However, it is interesting to note that, despite its businesses and ambitions, the religiosity of some of its members is not necessarily questioned. In this sense, Argentine history has had deeply Catholic genocides, for example.

On the other hand, the series shows us a popular religiosity, a base and supportive evangelism, although linked and eventually in conflict with the institutional one, which ventures with a mystical vein. Clearly, then, The Kingdom does not question religion or faith.

The political-ideological side is curiously the least commented on in the series. Perhaps because it is (for now) much less developed than the religious one, but it is very clear that we are facing a neoliberal project, clearly exposed in some speeches, in the actors and methodologies put into play and even in the name of the fictional political space. It remains to see who his opponents would be. Being clear about this I think helps to correct the initial general impression of an anti-political bias in the series.

Production and technical items

They are first class. The montage is effective, in such a way that it offers successful scenes of suspense and ensemble. The same can be said for camera locations and direction.

The message and conclusions

The series, in its internationalist zeal, in almost all its course avoids direct allusions to its location; but at some point it is clear that it takes place mainly in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

At the real level, surely Brazil is closer to the state of affairs posed by the series. But as in The Maid's Tale (the series and the book) and also in the novel Submission, by Michel Houellebecq, we are facing a dystopia that raises the possible arrival of a religious leader to a Latin American government. A scenario where in this case the neoliberal establishment closes ranks with religious fundamentalism.

A series that leaves us asking some questions: What would await a Latinoamerican country if a similar coalition were to conquer power (a story that, in part, we already know)? What would your opponent be like?

Good actors, horrible series . A waste of time Warning: Spoilers
Having seen all the season, there is nothing worth other than the first episode Please do not waste your time.

Bad story line, slow dialogues, useless scenes, and the horrible idea of adding a kind of "superpower".

Boring.

Ah, and a very bad "imitation" of Evangelical religion . They make it look like a Iglesia Universal style at midnight on tv.

Outstanding & Thrilling Series
Sunflower00712 September 2021
This series blew me & my family away. Showing us how the corruption is real and how high official only care about the money only. No the well being of anyone. The tale was super thrilling, for of intrigues & scandals involving an Angelical church that a false Christian family runs. These people & corrupted others would do anything to cover up their shame and to keep having money flowing in their pockets.

There must be a second season of this series. There are so many unanswered questions in this ending. So, it gets it well deserved top ten stars.

Excellent in every way
graceostera14 November 2021
The story does not reflect the reality of Argentina's politics, not it should, it is a fictional story that puts forward an fascinating hypothesis: do televangelists manipulate audiences the way (some) politicians do? Do politicians appeal to their audiences emotional side the way spiritual leaders do? The answer to both questions may be: YES.

Impeccable acting and polished cinematography and production.

It's not a REAL ten, see below:
gcarrizo-3863415 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The concept and the idea are good but the final execution is really, really bad: The script and the characters are straight out of a mexican cheap telenovela or a cheesy soap opera, production-wise is okay and the build up of the scenes are somewhat consistent until it fells flat on it face. Like having a "edgy party with drugs and guns" full of... rich and well groomed kids? A russian roulette where there's a dude behind the player not worried about the bullet getting to through this dude and hitting him? Yeah, that's not convincing at all.

Some good acting (Furriel and Dupláa) but most of them are bad. Except for Chino Darín's one, because he isn't even acting. He moves around the sets, putting weird faces and trying to sound convincing.

How to spoil a good story and a good concept, a masterclass.

Why 10 stars, though? Oh yes, that's only to annoy conservatives.

Not credible: too many errors and obvious from first episode
info-7950227 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Too many not creíble situations and nonsense.

Just to name a few:

Argentina is not an evangelical country so except when in the temple is not creíble that the pastor could preach to literally "everybody" and they respond back. If it has to be excused this mistake as it is "fiction" I don't think so, it's pretty unreal specially considering the authors, tries to express their political point of view anchored in he reality of the 2001 crisis but neglect this fact. If they wanted to make a statement against the religious power in Argentine they didn't show the guts necessary to do so.

The" fish" teletransport himself and Tadeo outside a bus to hitchhike to escape instead of just tele-transport let's say to any city of their choice.

A series of doors closes behind the fiscal like if it where "get smart" (el súper agente 86) and nobody closes them

And the list continues. Así you can see the errors and mistake is super wide, from just little mistakes to huge errors.

Oh and I forgot since episode 1 the "mystery plot" has no mystery. It was pretty obvious.

If you are looking for something good stay away. If you want to watch something regular you will enjoy.

Just another piece of garbage.
alecasand8 September 2021
Let's see, mediocre performances, mediocre script, mediocre filmography and direction, is impossible to mention something good in this show, even when are a couple of aceptable actors, their performances are more according to an amateur theater group.

Not even waste your time and please avoid second season, one was more than enough.

Another Netflix blunder
Roldijo17 April 2023
The story promises to take us behind the scenes of a family that runs an evangelical empire in Argentina and the dark secrets they hide behind so much power and wealth. However, despite having a potentially intriguing plot, the series leaves much to be desired.

One of the biggest problems is its slow and monotonous pace. The dialogues are tedious and mostly absurd, which creates a lot of distance between one and the story. In addition, the characters are shallow and uninteresting, making it impossible for the viewer to empathize with them.

Another recurring and somewhat embarrassing problem is the exaggerated portrayal of the lives of powerful characters, especially those in the world of politics. The series focuses too much on spurious negotiations worthy of a cartoon, which ends up being tiring and unrealistic. The plot is also predictable, with twists you can see coming a mile away and unnecessary scenes that seem to be included just to create some interest, failing miserably.

In addition, the show presents a superficial view of Argentina, coming across as vulgar and simplistic. The characters are presented as stereotypes and the series fails to capture the complexity and richness of the local culture.

In conclusion, this is such a poorly made product that it fails to meet the minimum expectations. If you are looking for an original and intelligent series, you will probably be more than disappointed with "The Kingdom".

afariasduarte27 March 2023
The first season wasn't the best, but they managed to make things worse in the second. The main plot is too fanciful and the side plots don't help tell the story. No character is charismatic enough to root for him, and the (many) villains seem to come out of a Latin telenovela from the 1970s. As much as the actors strive to offer a good job, the text does not help them. The first season deserved a six, but this second was so low that the grade drops to three. I hope they don't try for a third season. Release the cast for better work, they deserve it. Cheap brochure. Don't waste time with this!!!

A communist manifesto filmed with Netflix's dollars
briankomendant31 March 2023
The title of my review sums it up. Cardboard characters (written as such) and a ridiculous plot. My 3 stars go to production value, the gorgeous landscapes of Argentinian North and one pity star to a stellar cast wasted. And oh the irony, to use the budget given by an American corporation to trash the US and sing the old Castrist-Chavez tune. The first season was somewhat watchable, the second is an ultra leftist campaign spot. There are better Netflix projects made in Argentina out there, stay away from this one. For the record: I'm a big supporter of Argentinian film and TV and it's the first negative review I've ever written on here. But I felt I had to.
