fine documentary about a key year and a key piece of art
'Paris 1907' succeeds to say much more than an usual documentary about the key year that 1907 was in the history of art, and about one of the most important paintings of Picasso - a turn-point in his career and in the history of art - 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon'. Starting with the exposition of the theme, it goes back a few years to 1904 when Picasso comes to Paris, meets Apollinaire, creates some of his last works in the more conventional styles (all fine pieces of art), and then meets Matisse - who will be for many decades his friend and rival. The two artists lived and created in the same epoch, and their artistic rivalry led to each one trying to surpass the other in invention, in rebellion, in turning the tables of the conventions of art as they existed until then. The film does a smart task into combining photographs, footage from documentaries and from the films of Melies, music and actors scenes in a manner that serves the ideas places the works of Matisse and Picasso in the context of their complex times. We do get a better understanding about the times and the art of the times and this is almost everything an art lover may ask from such a film.
