Richard Powell's Heir will screen at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada tomorrow, and the first teaser suggests that something awfully horrible will be unfolding. Powell and his team have previously made Worm, Familiar, Remote, and The Last Halloween, and Heir looks set to join them as a strong jolt to the system. This practical effects horror short is a monster movie unlike any other, it is a bleak and fantastical examination of one of [society's] darkest taboos that aims to stimulate the mind and wrench the gut with equal power. Bill Oberst Jr (Resolution) and Robert Nolan lead the cast. We've already seen the first images, and the visuals deepen an atmosphere of dread. You can visit the Fantasia site for more...

I was lucky enough to screen Heir a couple months back and I was very taken with it. It was truly shocking in the all the best ways, dealing with taboo subject matter in a way that only horror can do. After three shorts now, I'm definitely curious what director Richard Powell can do with feature material and a budget to match.
You can read my review here.

Canada's rich tradition of body horror continues in Heir, a shocking new short from writer/director Richard Powell, whose films Worm and Familiar have been praised for raising horror filmmaking to an art form. Since I've only seen Heir I'll keep the hyperbole to a minimum, but I will say that Powell understands how horror can work to tackle very dark, taboo topics in a way that other forms just can't. And here, Powell supplies some truly repulsive imagery in service of discussing an equal repulsive topic.
Heir begins with a father confirming a "play date" with an unknown, online contact. Shrouded in the shadows as he does this, you know this kind of "play date" is not of the innocent variety. We see him itching at a wound - a malady that can't be soo [Continued ...]...

Heir (2015)
Written by: Richard Powell
Directed by: Richard Powell
Cast: Robert Nolan (Gordon), Bill Oberst Jr. (Denis), Mateo D’Avino (Paul), Stacey Campbell (Kid), Ken Austen (Rotting Pedophile), Jane Pokou (Waitress).
If you have heard the buzz around Fatal Pictures’ new film “Heir”, you can rightfully get pretty excited about it. A convergence of two juggernauts actors of independent horror is what it is, plain and simple. Bill Oberst Jr. and Robert Nolan can masterfully wield the ability to take everyman creepy from an innocuous and subtle unsettledness to a menacing and baneful fever pitch right before your very eyes.
It’s only a natural progression that they would inevitably share the screen together. Every time I watch anything with either of them in it, I know that I’m not going to see the normal world in the same comfortable way for a little while after that.

Toronto-based Fatal Pictures is a independent production company founded by producer Zach Green and writer/director Richard Powell. This award-winning duo have unleashed three unsettling short films: Consumption (2008), Worm (2010), and their latest shocker, Familiar (2012), which was recently added to FEARnet's slate of horror shorts, and you can also watch it at the end of this interview. Both Powell and Green generously took some time to talk about Familiar, and shed some light on both the past and the future of Fatal Pictures. Producer Zach Green FEARnet: How did you meet collaborator Richard Powell? What made the two of you "click" in such a way that you could join forces on such uniquely disturbing films? Green: Richard and I met at film school in Toronto. I ended up editing a film for Richard and we became very close, and built a great rapport in the editing room. We came to realize...

The exorcism/possession sub-genre of horror has been a very effective way to scare the shit out of audiences ever since young Linda Blair brought a nightmare to life 35 years ago. Now the short film Eviction brings us its own take on the subject of demonic possession.
Eviction premiered recently at Toronto After Dark, and we have the nine-minute short in its entirety below.
The film was written/directed by Justin McConnell (The Eternal, The Collapsed), was co-produced by the late Kevin Hutchinson (who also did the F/X work), and stars Robert Nolan (Familiar, Worm, Sick).
Synopsis:
A message of warning. And welcome. A herald of my arrival. Transfer of my energy. Welcome to my world. I am all things, and nothing. I am Nameless.

If you have read my recent articles on Canadian Horror Filmmakers, then you’ve likely heard of the Fatal Pictures filmmaking team of Richard Powell and Zach Green.
Starting with the short films Consumption (2008), Worm (2010) and then most recently Familiar (2012), they have made series of high quality horror films. I was lucky enough to present the world premiere of Familiar in March of this year at my Fright Nights film series; the film has been running up a mountain of festival awards since. This was no surprise to this writer. In this day and age of anyone being able to pick up a camera, the subtlety, complexity and sophistication of their work is quite unique in horror filmmaking these days. I spoke with director Richard Powell again recently to talk about their film and what they have coming up next.
Take me back to the beginning. How did you both...

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.
Being both a film writer and a host of a monthly horror film series called Fright Nights at the Projection Booth (based out of Toronto, Canada), I have noticed an incredible renaissance of grindhouse and horror directors coming out of Canada in the past few years. Southern Ontario,...

Few short film writer/directors have caused as much buzz with their work in the genre over the last few years as Richard Powell, the writer/director of the critically acclaimed shorts “Consumption”, “Worm”, and “Familiar'. Alongside his film partner at Fatal Pictures, producer Zach Green, he’s created a series of deeply disturbing works that examine the darker side of human nature and find horror in the all-too-real capacity for evil that people hide inside themselves.

Familiar was a great, short film in a lot of ways. It was most notable for its practical effects and 1st person narrative style. I wrote a little review on it, which you can read Here! Fatal Pictures, the production company behind both Familiar and Worm, is truly doing the right thing in the world of horror. They are bringing quality on low budgets and making films that are memorable.
I had a chance to interview Zach Green a few weeks ago about the company and where it was headed (read). Title: Familiar Director: Richard Powell (‘Worm’) Starring: Robert Nolan (‘Battleground’), Astrida Auza (‘The Bare Bones’) and Cathryn Hostrick (‘Words of Goodbye’) Horror films involving monsters that invade people’s bodies are often played as comical, and rarely take themselves seriously. The horror short ‘Familiar,’ written and directed by Richard Powell and produced by Zach Green, puts a welcome spin on the idea, showcasing the damaging psychological and physical effects the situation can have on the characters. More horror films should follow in ‘Familiar’s lead, balancing the psychological trauma with the gore and attacks commonly seen in the genre. ‘Familiar,’ which was produced by Powell and Green’s production company Fatal Pictures, follows [ Read More ]...

A few months ago I had the absolute pleasure of viewing Familiar, the new short film from Fatal Pictures. Familiar took me back to the era of Cronenberg and reminded me that directors don’t take chances on body-horror anymore. I mean, why not? Freudian horror is something that everyone has to experience (repression, sexual desires, Your Mother).
I was given the opportunity to talk to Zach Green, (co-owner of Fatal Pictures and producer of Familiar) and I asked him a few questions in regards to Familiar as well as his role behind the scenes.
Me: Zach, state your role within Fatal Pictures.
Zach: My role in Fatal Pictures is being the acting Producer first and foremost; I did edit on Consumption & Worm. One half of the Canadian Film Production Company entitled Fatal Pictures Inc (www.fatalpictures.com).
Say hello, everyone!
Me: Familiar calls back to some Cronenberg-ian themes with body horror and Freudian repression.

More Horror's Jason Lees recently had a chance to do a Q&A with Familiar writer/director Richard Powell. Check out the interview below as well as some exclusive stills taken on the set.

MoreHorror - The character set up in Familiar is beautifully done, using an internal monologue in a way that draws the viewer in and keeps them out at the same time. We get inside your character's head, but not as close as we assumed. It's a balancing act, that type of narration. How did you come across the right proportion of what to say and what to show?
Richard Powell - For me the use of the narration serves only as a character element and never dishes out exposition. I was careful to never rely on the voice over to convey that which I could depict visually. In many cases I...

In just a few short years, writer/director Richard Powell has made quite a name for himself with his provocative and unrelenting trio of short films - Consumption, Worm and Familiar - which have established the up-and-coming filmmaker as a serious talent on the rise.
After recently viewing Powell's latest offering, Familiar (review here), Dread Central immediately caught up with the director to talk about his powerful short film, the inspiration behind his often challenging stories and more on his plans to adapt Worm into a feature film while still not planning to leave the short film world behind altogether just yet.

Zach Green and those over at Fatal Pictures are well on their way to creating a tsunami-like wave in the horror industry. Their first two films entitled Consumption and Worm have received praise from many in the horror community. I have not seen either, so I cannot add my own opinion but from what I can tell, this company is doing the right thing by fans. As I have lamented on numerous occasions, the horror genre is flooded with poorly made independent nonsense that does not move anything forward. I am actually quite gun-shy to indie horror now because of all the bullshittery that I have had to wade through. Familiar is a different story though, I have heard plenty of good things from people and being that it was only twenty minutes long, I felt that I could take a chance. Boy, am I glad that I decided to...

The 49er. I'm not talking about the San Fran type that was just a couple of bobbled balls away from the Super Bowl this year... I’m talking about the real thing. The water panning, gold tooth wearing, scraggly haired, crazy eyed character from early American history. That's what we're looking at in the upcoming short The Prospector's Curse.
Yukon Cornelius be damned. You know these early prospectors had to be a little unbalanced. You can't just sit with a pan in the water all day hoping gold will wash up into it without being a little touched. It's this fun thought that drives The Prospector's Curse, which incidentally carries the tagline "There's blood in them there hills!". It's early in 2012, but that is officially one of our favorite tags so far this year.
The film is currently in post-production in Toronto, Canada. For more info visit The Prospector's Curse Facebook page.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by producer Zach Green.
Director/writer: Richard Powell.
Cast: Robert Nolan, Astrida Auza and Cathryn Hostick.
"Familiar" is the third film to be developed by Fatal Pictures. "Worm" was their previous outing and a review of this film is available here: (Worm Review). Much like "Worm," "Familiar" stars Robert Nolan as a very negative individual full of unexpressed resentment. His resentment takes form as a parasite wrapped around his body. Some self-surgery places this short film in the realm of psychological horror.
Nolan plays John Dodd a man in his '40s struggling through a mid-life crisis. He is tired of his wife and his daughter. He wants out but he does not have a plan. However, John does have a really negative voice whispering in his ear. It demands that he kill his wife and run away from it all.

From producer Zach Green and writer/director Richard Powell, the duo responsible for the darkly comical genre short “Worm”, comes the wickedly enjoyable short “Familiar”, a film that owes as much to the body horror of David Cronenberg as it does the outrageousness of Frank Henenlotter. It’s my favorite kind of horror flick: The movie takes an inherently silly premise and treats it very seriously. The end result is nothing sort of brilliant, and cements Fatal Pictures as one of the most daring genre outlets currently in operation. I sincerely hope that these guys put together a full-length feature in the future, as they I think they could definitely pull it off with very little effort. What these guys accomplish on a miniscule budget is nothing short of impressive. “Word” star Robert Nolan skillfully embodies the role of bored husband John, a man who is growing increasingly displeased with his typical suburban life.

A seemingly normal day for students and staff at a typical American High School potentially could turn into something much more malevolent as cherubic appearing teacher Richard Dodd secretly seethes with a dangerous, vehement hatred for his daily routine, his co-workers, and his students.
While news stories and films depicting serial killers as your average, everyday nice guy uncomfortably force us to consider who may be living next door to us, Worm has us consider something even more disturbing: whose hands are we leaving the well-being of our children in when we drop them off at the doors of the school building each day? It is a thought-provoking question and is not all that far-fetched, considering the plethora of news reporting in the last few several highlighting teacher indiscretions with students. Worm is a very dark little drama that starts out innocently enough. Geoffrey Oswald Dodd is an average high school teacher, going through the motions with his students, secretly disgusted with the apathetic state of the young minds filling his classroom. What becomes increasingly apparent however is that Dodd.s true colors are far more sinister.
Dodd, played by Robert Nolan, rarely speaks outwardly in this 20-minute short. Instead, the audience is forced into his twisted mind through his thoughts, made audible by way of voice over. Normally, this is a tricky technique to employ, especially for the entire length of a film, but writer/director Richard Powell pulls it off with disturbing effect.
Initially, Dodd is presented simply as a disgruntled teacher who has lost his ability to inspire his students. then we sink a little deeper into his misanthropic thoughts and discover just how unsettling the situation has become.

Canadian independent filmmaker Morgan Muscat (Severance, The Devil Walks Among You) has announced that he will write and produce a new short film for his Moonlit Road Entertainment banner, with principal photography slated to begin next summer in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The film, entitled Suffer The Little Children, is an adaptation of a Stephen King short story from the author's Nightmares and Dreamscapes collection. Ryan M. Andrews is set to direct this adaptation.
The film tells the story of an elderly elementary school teacher who begins to suspect that aliens are slowly taking over the bodies of her students. Is her attempt to save them an amazing act of courage, or a fatal trick of the mind? Muscat obtained the rights from King earlier this year and has since written two drafts of the script, which he calls "a tense, nerve-shattering story that will stick true to King's work". The...

Go back and try to remember the first time you watched Psycho. Yes, it featured the legendary shower scene. And yes, it was scary, but it wasn't the most frightening aspect of the film. You know what was? The inner workings of Norman Bates's mind. The darker recesses of what he was thinking. You know why this can be so frightening? We truly never know what is going on inside of the head of the person next to us? Are they checking us out? Are they thinking of a happy time we shared together? Or is it possible that they could be plotting out our death? In director Richard Powell's Worm starring esteemed character actor Robert Nolan and produced by Zach Green, the thoughts of a seemingly normal teacher over the course of a seemingly normal day are laid bare for the viewer to hear and to partake in.
