Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors and those who hope to get there. In this edition, we take on Michael Fassbender.
Bottom Line: Fassbender is an asset in any ensemble, from the “X-Men” franchise to “Inglourious Basterds.” Those franchises inflate his bankability in foreign territories, and he’s had two Oscar nominations, but he lacks marquee value. He was the biggest star in well-reviewed $97-million sequel “Alien: Covenant” (Metacritic: 65), which scored just $240 million worldwide, down dramatically from the $430 million earned by its predecessor, “Prometheus.” Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin didn’t even know who Fassbender was when his name came up to play the lead in hot project “Steve Jobs” (Metacritic: 82); and sure enough, even with a full-tilt Oscar push that brought him his first Best Actor nomination, the $30-million movie tanked with just $34 million worldwide. Fassbender tends to be cast as troubled antiheroes (Magneto, Macbeth,...

After tying the knot in a private Ibiza ceremony, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander headed for a vacation destination that has become a magnet for celebs: Verona, Italy.
The newlyweds were spotted eating out and stopping for photos with fans in Bologna, Florence and Verona.
The last, an undeniably romantic city — Romeo and Juliet was set here — has been a low-key getaway spot for stars who want to forgo the country’s more obvious A-list destinations like Capri, Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast. (Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna are both rumored to have homes in the area.)

It premiered as something of an underdog, but after four seasons the AMC drama “Halt and Catch Fire” emerged as a cult and critical favorite, mining unexpected depths of drama from its depiction of the computer industry’s nascent days. And two of its biggest fans, from beginning to end, were computer experts Jim and Janet Miller, who had an intimate connection with the world depicted by the show — because the show’s journey directly tracked with their own lives.
Jim and Janet began their careers in Texas during the early 1980s, Aka the “Silicon Prairie” era, before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988 to work for companies including Apple, Hewitt-Packard, and Sap. (Along the way, they also raised two children: my brother Eric and I.)

The behind-the-scenes release date drama surrounding Justin Chadwick’s long-delayed and oft-moved “Tulip Fever” has managed to keep the beleaguered Weinstein Company release in the cultural zeitgeist for at least a year longer than it should have. It ping-ponged from a July 2016 release to a February 2017 release, which then moved to August, and then September.
It was not worth the wait. And, judging by the chopped-up feel of the final product (and word from audiences that saw earlier cuts), those well-publicized calendar moves only resulted in a film that’s been repeatedly edited into a bizarre, boring final product that packs as much punch as a light sneeze or a gentle cough. A fever it is not.
Based on Deborah Moggach’s best-selling novel of the same name (and scripted by the author with Tom Stoppard), “Tulip Fever” is set in 17th century Holland, during the height of the eponymous...

In the age of nonstop studio blockbusters, a composer is never out of work. And no composer works harder than James Newton Howard. The brains behind more than 150 scores for film and TV, Howard has been nominated for eight Oscars across a career spanning more than four decades. His work includes the “Hunger Games” series; “Pretty Woman”; and every M. Night Shyamalan movie.
And music from all those films was on display at the 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where Howard was honored during the June 30 opening ceremony with the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.
“I’m very lucky,” Howard told IndieWire at the festival the next day. “I do seem to be in demand.”

Way back in 1979, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” brought us our first genuine female action hero in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Despite the three sequels that followed, Ripley proved to be something of an outlier. Until fairly recently, a woman could kill someone in a movie only if she faced brutal punishment afterward, as in Scott’s “Thelma and Louise,” or in the inevitable fates of Bond girls: They could dole out lethal action, but rarely survived.
Today, ass-kicking women are no longer an anomaly or subject to automatic retribution. This weekend, we watched Scarlett Johansson lay waste to her enemies (although not the box office) in “Ghost in the Shell,” following a path blazed by the likes of Linda Hamilton (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”), Uma Thurman (“Kill Bill”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). These roles may strike a blow for equality and diversity, but what these women — and...

Burn Burn Burn director Chanya Button is directing the project, which is being launched at the Efm.
Eva Green will star as Virginia Woolf and Gemma Arterton will play Vita Sackville-West in Vita & Virginia, director Chanya Button’s second feature after Burn Burn Burn.
Protagonist Pictures has boarded sales on the project and will launch to buyers at this week’s European Film Market in Berlin.
Set in the 1920s, the film will depict the passionate love affair between English novelist Woolf (Green) and socialite Sackville-West (Arterton), which inspired the former to write her novel Orlando.
Chanya Button, who made her feature debut in 2015 with the well-received Burn Burn Burn, will direct the film from a screenplay she co-wrote with Eileen Atkins, on whose stage play the film is based.
Producers are Evangelo Kioussis of Mirror Productions and Katie Holly of Blinder Films (Love & Friendship). Eva Green, Gemma Arterton and Mirror’s Simon Baxter are executive producers...

Love demands everything. That’s the sentimental tagline tethered to today’s beautiful new trailer for The Light Between Oceans, Derek Cianfrance’s adaptation that’s pegged to dock in theatres come September.
At first glance, it makes for quite the genuine and heartfelt tagline, but when set against the context of M. L. Stedman’s eponymous best-seller, it tees up a tragic and emotionally raw story.
You see, The Light Between Oceans orbits around a childless couple (Michael Fassbender & Alicia Vikander) situated on a isolated island off the coast of a post-wwi Australia.
Eager to raise a family of their own, Fassbender and Vikander’s would-be parents struggle through miscarriages and other setbacks that push their bond to the absolute limit. Clutching to any semblance of hope with worn, desperate hands, their prayers are soon answered when a lonely baby girl miraculously washes up on shore. But as the...

With only a few features under his belt, Derek Cianfrance has already established himself as one of the most raw, poetic, and promising directors currently sitting in the chair, both as an improviser and careful planner. His next feature is an initially odd choice at first glance, a sweeping romance with a title that both accurately states the poeticism of the talent that is paired with the material, yet also conjures images of a Nicolas Sparks adaptation. A closer look demands the former thought as the thunderous talent on display is considered.
The Light Between Oceans stars Michael Fassbender — whose own raw genius is on full display in the first trailer — Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Wesiz. Then, there’s cinematographer Adam Arkapaw, who lensed the recent Macbeth, the entire first season of True Detective, and Snowtown. This is all topped of course by Cianfrance, who penned this adaptation from a bestselling novel himself.

Director Derek Cianfrance certainly knows his way to an emotional gutpunch, as evidenced by “Blue Valentine,” which beautifully and agonizingly detailed the well of feelings involved in a breakup, leaving us clutching a box of Kleenex by the film’s gorgeous final credits. Can he do the same with “The Light Between Oceans“? Certainly, the story is […]

It’s been such a good year at the movies that I’m a little bit surprised by the degree to which I’m approaching tomorrow night’s Academy Awards ceremony with something resembling… disinterest. And again, it’s not necessarily the movies. It’s hard to remember a year when there wasn’t at least one obvious howler among the five, or now five-to-10 nominees—just by turning to random pages in Robert Osborne’s 70 Years of Oscar—The Official History of the Academy Awards I am reminded that The Turning Point, Midnight Express, Fatal Attraction and Mississippi Burning were all lauded by the Academy with Best Picture nominations. This year all eight movies nominated are, in my eyes, worthy of some measure of honor, including Room, my choice for the movie of the year. Yet I can’t remember the last time—could it have been 1991?—when I...

With such a wide-open race this year, it was hard to predict which movies would be the leading candidates to grab an armload of Oscar nominations -- or even how many Best Picture nominees there were likely to be.
Still, there were a lot of names and titles that experts expected to be on the list when the Academy announced its nominations on Thursday morning. Now that the list is out, we can all express the proper shock and outrage and delight over which of our favorites made the cut and which got robbed.
Best Actor
This was one of the easiest categories to predict. But one of the bigger surprises among nominees was Bryan Cranston as Hollywood's favorite blacklisted screenwriter, Dalton Trumbo, in "Trumbo." Fans crossing their fingers for Michael B. Jordan ("Creed") or last year's nominee Steve Carell ("The Big Short") were disappointed as well.

The 2016 Golden Globe Awards were held last night; it was a long one but thanks to host Ricky Gervais, it was anything but boring. The Revenant took home Best Picture – Drama, Best Director for Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. Some might hope that Leos’ Oscar chances are a lock now, but let’s remember that for some strange reason he didn’t win for Wolf of Wall Street. The Academy has already closed voting for Oscar nominations, so this award show has no claim to much.
The Martian won Best Picture – Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy for Matt Damon, while the Best Actress honors went to Brie Larson for Room and Jennifer Lawrence for Joy. And our favorite actress, Kate Winslet, won for her supporting role in Steve Jobs. Also, Sylvester Stallone won for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Creed; his last...

The Revenant was the big winner at the Golden Globes taking home the coveted Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director awards, painting a clear front-runner for the Oscar nominations later this week.
Host Ricky Gervais was back for another round of hosting duties, having last hosted in 2012, with Hollywood welcoming him back on stage with open arms. The awards show kicked off with a Best Supporting Actress win for Kate Winslet in the decades-spanning Steve Jobs.
The award was just a sample of what was to come. Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been nominated for a Golden Globe eleven times since 1994, took home the trophy for his role in The Revenant. With his performance as Hugh Glass, a fur trader who seeks revenge after being left for dead, DiCaprio is considered the Oscar front-runner for Best Actor. He’ll face competition from Matt Damon who took home the Best Actor...

Golden Globes: Michael Fassbender. 2016 Golden Globes winners, as they're announced The Golden Globes will be hosted once again by Ricky Gervais, who stirred up quite a to-do a few years ago with his three few-holds-barred, back-to-back gigs (2010–2012). At the time, Gervais roasted the rich and famous (and not so-famous) ceremony attendees (and several non-attendees), implying, at times without naming names, that Hollywood Scientologists (Tom Cruise and John Travolta) were gay, that Jodie Foster was a lesbian (a juvenile, cringeworthy joke about Foster's box office flop The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson), that Madonna was hardly like her song “Like a Virgin” (for which he got a rebuke), and so on. Expect more of same this year for the entertainment of those who can only wish they were rich and famous and getting drunk at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills this evening. Who's going to win? The Golden Globes ceremony...

Years after Ricky Gervais roasted Mel Gibson at an earlier Globes show the pair hugged on stage when the Australian introduced footage from Mad Max: Fury Road.
Prior to introducing Gibson, Gervais, tongue firmly in his cheek, referred to previous bad blood between the pair. “I’m sure it’s embarrassing for both of us and I blame NBC for this terrible situation.”
After the embrace Gibson turned to the comedian and said: “I love seeing Ricky once every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy.”
A subsequent exchange was bleeped out.
The Martian was named best musical or comedy. Ridley Scott accepted the award and said “Screw you” as music began to play while he thanked a long list of collaborators.
Scott rounded off by saying: “Finally I know my [late] brother Tony would have been here tonight for sure and I know many of you knew him and loved him. I love you...

And so it goes, Alejandro González Iñárritu's "The Revenant" derails Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight" from dominating award season by winning the most trophies at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards! Besides taking home the Best Picture Drama trophy, Leonardo DiCaprio also won the Best Actor Drama trophy while Iñárritu received the Best Director award.
The Golden Globes, given by the Hollywood Foreign Press, bestowed "The Martian" as the Best Picture Comedy of the year because it's really funny! According to host Ricky Gervais, "The Martian" was a lot funnier than "Pixels." True that! Matt Damon also won Best Actor Comedy for "The Martian."
Jennifer Lawrence took home the Best Actress Comedy trophy for "Joy" beating her bestie Amy Schumer for "Trainwreck." Brie Larson won the Best Actress Drama award for "Room."
In the supporting acting categories, Kate Winslet won actress for "Steve Jobs" while Sylvester Stallone received the actor trophy.

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. The Florida Film Critics Circle has announced its winners and George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road" was the big winner taking home the Best Picture of the year award. It's kind of interesting that during the nomination phase, "Todd Haynes. Carol lead the way with eight nominations to Mad Max.s seven. After the final votes came in for the 2015 Florida Film Critics Circle Awards, in a surprise turn, Fury Road walked away with four trophies and Carol one."
Even awards darling, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," must settle for the runner-up title.

Winning a Golden Globe doesn't have the same cachet as getting an Oscar or an Emmy, but the awards ceremony itself is often more entertaining, for one big reason: It's unpredictable. The stars are boozed-up, the atmosphere's informal, and the outcomes are … well, sometimes pretty bizarre. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a small organization, and keeps both its membership and its voting practices shrouded in mystery. It's often hard to make sense of its choices, because shadowy cabals would rather not explain themselves.
