Eighteen years ago, Tyler Perry brought his DIY play to the big screen. Released in 2005, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” chronicles one beleaguered woman’s journey to healing and self-discovery after being betrayed by her philandering husband. The film features all the classical elements of Perry productions. It’s set in a predominantly Black area of the South, there are theatrical church scenes and plenty of the over-the-top histrionics extracted straight from his plays. But more importantly, there was Madea.
Played by Perry himself, the matriarch emerged as a rambunctious, pistol-packing matriarch who’s as comfortable espousing quirky wisdom as she is ferocious clapbacks. Upon its release, the flick got mixed reviews from critics — but it grossed $50.7 million at the box office, just about 10-times more than its budget. Since then, Perry’s released nine additional Madea films, with the eight that came out in theaters grossing $570 million at the box office,...

Shonda Rhimes, creator of “Bridgerton” and the upcoming prequel series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” is known for creating powerful screen stories that center women and a diverse range of characters of all gender, racial, ethnic and sexual identities.
But, as Rhimes began to focus on ensuring her Shondaland productions were equally diverse behind the scenes, she came to recognize a key role in that mission: the line producer.
“You look around the set and it’s great to have a Black director or a Black writer and Black actors and then the entire crew doesn’t really represent America or the world,” Rhimes said in a virtual symposium with Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria, chairman of Netflix films Scott Stuber, filmmaker Tyler Perry and researcher Dr. Stacy Smith. “If you have a line producer who is on board with what you are feeling, then your crew is completely different.

With over a decade at one of the most successful independent studios under her belt, Michelle Sneed is striking out on her own.
The Tyler Perry Studios alum, who most recently served as president of the sprawling and prolific Atlanta operation since 2018, just launched a new studio. A Few Good Women Productions is targeting a first-of-its kind model, with an exclusively female leadership offering green lights and maintaining project autonomy through every phase — acquisition, development, financing, production, licensing and distribution.
“One thing that I’ve always said is, ‘Why do big studios get to have lot of fun?’ — and by ‘fun’ I mean majority ownership of these assets,” says Sneed, who wants to see that money trickle down not to just partners and creators but budgets. “I have dedicated my career mostly to Black and brown content. And I’d say that about 99 percent of the time it’s been on extremely small budgets.

Tyler Perry is heading to war — World War II, that is. The prolific writer-director has boarded his next feature film with “Six Triple Eight,” a new period drama coming to Netflix, it was announced Wednesday.
Based on an article written by journalist Kevin M. Hymel for WWII History Magazine, “Six Triple Eight” tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion active during World War II. The group, which consisted of 855 women, was tasked with sorting through a three-year backlog of 17 million pieces of undelivered mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their loved ones at home, while struggling with discrimination and violence in war-torn Europe. The women of the Battalion received the Congressional Gold Medal this year after President Joe Biden signed the bill to honor them.
Perry will write and direct “Six Triple Eight” and produce along with Angi Bones and Tony Strickland for Tyler Perry Studios.

Tyler Perry is going to Amazon Prime Video. The studio, with a film division led by Julie Rapaport, has notched a deal with the Atlanta-based entertainment mogul that will see him produce, write and direct four features for worldwide distribution on Prime Video.
“I’m excited and grateful to start working with Amazon Studios to bring movies to Prime Video,” said Perry in a statement. “Jennifer Salke and the entire team have welcomed me with open arms, and I’m looking forward to continuing telling unique stories and bringing my next projects to the global audiences that they reach.”
Perry broke out in Hollywood in 2005 with the surprise smash “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” The adaptation of his self-penned stage play introduced filmgoing audiences to Madea, the fast-talking, zero-shit-taking atheist grandmother played (in a supporting role) by Perry himself.

What did it take to get “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/4.99-5.99) back to #1 on all three of the VOD charts we follow? A steep price cut. The summer hit enjoyed two across-the-board #1 weeks when it was initially released (at 19.99 to purchase), but then had to share top position with “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony/19.99) and “Beast” (Universal/19.99) by mid-September.
“Maverick” rebounding to #1 at iTunes and Google Play, both of which rank by traffic, isn’t surprising, but it is a rare lower-cost film to also take top spot at Vudu, which ranks by revenue. The film’s position means it had four times or more the activity of any film costing 19.99. Even more impressive? All of this comes ahead of whenever the film starts streaming on Paramount+.
At Netflix, two new films, both from heavyweight talent with whom the streamer is in business, lead at the moment. “Lou,” starring Allison Janney...

Journalist Chris Wallace put Tyler Perry in a rather uncomfortable position on CNN/HBO Max’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace” when he pointed out that Perry’s Madea character has been accused of fostering negative stereotypes of Black men and women. Wallace even mentioned how fellow filmmaker Spike Lee in 2009 called Madea “coonery buffoonery” — a term Urban dictionary defines as “antics and behavior displayed by certain underclass individuals in the Black culture, the end result being the embarrassment of the rest of the upstanding Black community.”
Perry, the creator and performer behind the tough, elderly woman in roughly a dozen films since 2005, acknowledged that he has faced widespread criticism for his most popular creation. ”Emasculating Black men, I’ve heard it all. Yeah,” he told Wallace in an interview that started streaming Saturday.

Ahead of premiering his latest feature, A Jazzman’s Blues, at the Toronto International Film Festival, Tyler Perry sat down for a wide-ranging conversation about the long road to making the period drama and his hope for diversity in the entertainment industry.
“I am extremely excited for what has happened. The diversity, the choices, the opportunities,” said Perry in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter editorial director Nekesa Mumbi Moody. “But I worry because there is such a push for diversity and push for hiring people of color that I have found, in situations, that there are people [who] can be pushed into seats they are not ready for.”
Perry emphasized the need for training and mentorship in order to create sustainable diversity in Hollywood. “I don’t want to have us as Black people in seats that we weren’t ready for and then have...

Bam! Pow! Crack! That’s the sound of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/5.99) holding back the ascension of “The Batman” (Warner Bros./24.99) on two out of three PVOD charts.
“The Batman” debuted a week ago, but “Spider-Man” held on to the #1 spot at both iTunes and GooglePlay, with “The Batman” second at both. Those sites rank by number of transactions, irrespective of revenue. At Vudu, which calculates by money, not individual sales, “The Batman” ranks #1 for the week, with “Spider-Man” #3..
The well-timed price drop looks like a strategic play on Sony’s part. Price reduction is a normal part of VOD play, but it’s unusual when a film is still thriving as PVOD. Whatever the motive, the result prevents Warner Bros. from claiming a clear victory.
Even so: Spider-Man and Batman represent apples and oranges. Sony’s “Spider-Man” has no streaming outlet while “The Batman” also debuted last Monday on HBO Max.
