Fox has put in development an untitled mystery megachurch family drama project from writer Julian Breece and 20th Century Fox TV. This marks the first network sale for Breece, who created webseries Buppies and sold it to Bet where his dramedy spec What Would Dylan Do? went to pilot starring Kelly Rowland. In the untitled Fox project, when a celebrity televangelist dies mysteriously, his family fights to salvage their Houston-based megachurch and “inspirational” media…...

Kelly Rowland has signed up to star in a comedy pilot for Bet, exec-produced by The Bernie Mac Show's Warren Hutcherson, and written and co-executive produced by Julian Breece (remember him? He created that Tatyana Ali web series we featured on the old S&A site called Buppies). I wondered what he'd been up to since then, and if that web series, which was picked up by Bet, and aired on its website, opened up any doors for him. To be titled What Would Dylan Do, Rowland will of course star as the titular Dylan, described as "a struggling L.A.-based relationship blogger" rooming with her best friend Cherise, and Brooke (she's divorced and wealthy),...

Bet is on a roll. After two successful original online series—Buppies, starring The Fresh Prince of Bel Air's Tatyana Ali, and Shop Talk, starring New York Undercover's and Alpha's Malik Yoba—Bet included a slate of online series to its 2011 television upfront presentation in New York this past spring. The upfront lineup included drama Lenox Avenue, science fiction Odessa, thriller Asylum, and dramedy The Come Up, based on the critically acclaimed book series of the same name by New York Times bestselling author Lyah Beth LeFlore. The Come Up, which follows the lives of six urban youths navigating the perks and pitfalls of living life in the fast lane as they pursue their dreams as hip-hop artists, is set to debut on Bet.com Wednesday, August 24 under the new name 8 Days a Week. The 10-part series stars actor-rapper Justin 'Irocc' Williams and internet sensation Skye Townsend. "8 Days a...

Comedian, writer and actress Robin Thede lives and breathes comedy. Whether writing jokes for comedian Mike Epps (when he hosted the 2010 Bet Awards) or playing posh princess Priscilla on Bet's web series "Buppies," the trained sketch comedian's resume is no laughing matter. Thede most recently made waves when her "For Colored Girls" parody video, "For (Stuffed) Colored Girls," reached over 111,000 views online. Essence.com spoke with Thede to find out more about the spoof -- and why she'd love to be the Black Tina Fey...

I’ve been wanting to do this for some time – a periodically (maybe annually) updated list of up-and-coming black filmmakers, especially those working mostly outside the mainstream; something we could call “black filmmakers to watch,” preceded by a year, not-so unlike Filmmaker magazine’s annual “25 New Faces of Independent Film” list.
As I’ve already made known on this blog, I’m not necessarily a fan of lists, especially ranked lists where the arts are concerned.
However, I do see Some value in providing black cinema enthusiasts like yourselves (or cinema enthusiasts regardless of race) with the names of noteworthy black filmmakers who may otherwise go unnoticed by the the mainstream press, and even indie film publications like Filmmaker magazine. We’re celebrating those black filmmakers… propping them up, you could say. If a site like ours doesn’t do that, we certainly can’t complain when more prominent media outlets don’t.

Here’s another Tyson Beckford flick, also from 2008, which was only recently released on DVD, 2 years later. Is Tyson Beckford hot this year or something? Something happen with him that I don’t know about that prompted the release of 2 films he starred in, in 2008?
Anyway, this one is called Hotel California. Like the other one (Kings Of The Evening, which I wrote about yesterday – read that Here), it played at a handful of film festivals in 2008, and then vanished until this year, released on DVD just last month.
Synopsis: Revenge comes full circle in Hotel California when three former partners (Troy, Pete, and Al) with strong connections to the underground crime scene of L.A., reunite in a dingy hotel room to rehash the past. Anxiety builds as they take part in a calculated mind game of wit and loyalty.
The cast also includes Ms Buppies herself, Tatyana Ali,...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

Academy voters had their hands full this year in pairing down some 2,000 web shows submitted from fans in over 100 different countries. The official nominees for the 2nd Annual Streamy Awards were announced this morning in a live streamed internet broadcast led by CBSNews.com's Shira Lazar and theStream.tv's Jim Festante. Click here for the full list of Streamy Award nominees. Whole Lotta Drama While comedy series seemed to run the table last year thanks to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and The Guild, this time voters lauded a handful of dramas with multiple nominations. So… Martin Lawrence and Tatyana Ali walk into a bar…
Variety reports that cable channel, TV One, has acquired Love That Girl, a 4-episode sitcom from Martin Lawrence and writer Bentley Kyle Evans. (Martin, The Jamie Foxx Show). Evans created the sitcom, which stars “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” alum Tatyana Ali.
The show will air as a special 3-night event on TV One, from Tuesday, Jan. 19, through Thursday, Jan. 21, at 9 p.m. Back-to-back episodes will air each night (including repeats).
Tatyana Ali stars as a divorcee who moves back to Southern California to work with her father (played by Phil Morris of all people) in the real estate business. Alphonso McAuley co-stars as her unemployed brother, while Kendyl Joi plays her best friend.
In an unusual setup, Evans is said to have produced the sitcom without the involvement of a studio, and called in favors – which included drawing on his Martin star,...

As any regular reader of AfterElton.com already knows, one of the biggest issues we have when it comes to gay visibility in popular culture is the lack of gay men of color in our popular culture. That makes me especially happy to report that Bet's new webseries Buppies includes a gay storyline — and one that the network is trying to get the word out about.
Buppies (a spin on the word "yuppie") follows five African-American friends trying to make their way in black Hollywood. One of those friends is Eliot, a sports agent and the "perfect boyfriend", who is dating Priscilla, a magazine editor.
Spoiler Alert!
Three of the webisodes have aired so far and in the third we meet NFL football star Truth who appears to have some unfinished business with Eliot as you can see here.

The web series world so far has been relatively devoid of scandals. So when TMZ reported on a lawsuit surrounding former Fresh Price of Bel Air star (and R&B singer) Tatyana Ali's upcoming web series Buppies, the story took a left turn. Now, after the lawsuit has been dropped in court and both sides are calling it a misunderstanding, the series is finally set for release after signing a deal with Bet.com for a November 3 launch. The series first popped up on our radar over a year ago when we talked to Ali and her sister Anastasia, who had just shot the project as the first original from their indie production co, HazraH Entertainment. The pair teamed up with writer-director Julian Breece, whom Tatyana had met while both were at Harvard, and crafted a series that feels like Sex and the City for a young black generation,...

In a civil suit filed June 17 in Los Angeles Superior Court, Tatyana Ali (Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and her sister Anastasia are suing Julian Breece, the director of their web series Buppies over a reported $45,000 they invested in the series. The fraud claim states that Breece's company, Game Theory Films, lost the money before ever producing more than a pilot for the series. Also, according to a report by TMZ, the sisters are seeking rights to the project which apparently they no longer own. The series was announced back in October, in what was said to be a partnership between Breece and the Ali sisters' HazraH Entertainment. Breece and Tatyana were college friends at Harvard and had working on putting together the project for several years. Actress/singer Tatyana Ali is taking legal action against a Hollywood production company after she invested thousands of dollars in a failed Internet TV show.
The former Fresh Prince of Bel Air star claims she pumped $45,000 (£30,000) into a web series called Buppies, in which she was to star.
Ali, who invested along with her sister Anastasia, even filmed a pilot episode of the show, but alleges production company chiefs subsequently walked away from the project - leaving the sisters empty-handed.
The pair has filed suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court in a bid to recoup the money they spent on the show, according to TMZ.com.
