- Dexter gets some much-needed R&R time with Rita and the kids out of town, leading to his stalking of a new victim - until he unexpectedly begins to empathize with his target, a cop that murdered her family.
- Open with Rita taking the kids to a wedding for three days. After they leave Dexter finds an "I love Dad" mug the kids made for him.
We see that Dexter's plan for the "vacation" is to target Sergeant Zoey Kruger, a police officer from the nearby Pembroke Pines department whose husband and daughter were killed during a recent home invasion. Dexter knows the blood expert from Kruger's jurisdiction and goes to see him under the pretense he is working on paper about blood feathering.
The blood guy suspects that Kruger committed the crimes herself and pinned the murders on a Darius Rae, a perp she roughed up the day before. Kruger was shot twice herself and Rae was supposedly killed later in a drug related incident.
After Christine's latest article outed the department's cooperation with Lundy, Debra and Lundy are forced to hide from Maria while they work on the Trinity case. They are trying to determine where Trinity will strike next. Lundy tells Dexter he thinks he's about to catch Trinity.
Cut to Trinity researching a building on a library computer. He notices the article about Lundy being in town.
Maria thinks she and Angel should disclose their relationship to the brass. She's worried their relationship could compromise the trial once they catch the "vacation killer." Angel doesn't think their relationship has progressed to the point where they need to out themselves.
Dexter looks at Kruger's file. In a photo he notices evidence that she had been wearing gloves during the crime. Harry shows up and starts drawing comparisons between Dexter and Kruger, a woman who committed murder to be free of her family.
Anton is getting jealous of how closely Debra is working with Lundy. She assures him it is strictly a professional relationship but he isn't buying it.
Dexter does recon on Kruger and learns she is selling her house.
Trinity waits outside of a bar. He spots a drunk man by himself and starts calling him obscenities. The bar patron tries to ignore Trinity, but the seriel killer persists until eventually the man starts beating Trinity up, which is apparently what the serial killer desired. Trinity tells him "it's your fault!" as the inebriated man walks off.
Dexter wanders around Kruger's house by himself looking for remnants of the gloves. Kruger shows up and gives Dexter a tour herself. She seems to flirt with the prospective buyer, before leaving the area.
A hunch directs Dexter to the garbage disposal. He intentionally jams the disposal and then searches inside while fixing it. In the disposal he finds a small piece of blue nitrile, the material used in disposable protective gloves user by police.
Debra and Lundy have determined Trinity's next murder will be the "bar meeting" and have found the kill site. During the meeting Lundy admits he has been unable to bottle his feelings for Debra. He tells her he would hate to interfere with her relationship with Anton. She seems confused and leaves.
Angel confides in Dexter that he and Maria are having trouble figuring out what to do with their relationship. He's worried about defining the relationship.
Christine apologizes to Quinn. He says he has no intention of working it out and shoves her out the door.
Back in his lab, Dexter finds minute gunshot residue and blood on the fragment of glove.
Lundy walks through the expected next Trinity murder site taking notes. Trinity spots Lundy from afar and recognizes from him the newspaper article.
"I've been found," Trinity whispers to himself. Trinity intentionally bumps into Lundy and drops his keys. This causes Lundy to suspect something. Lundy trails Trinity to a bus and makes a detailed note of the encounter.
Dexter calls Rita who is having a tough time managing the three kids.
Kruger pulls Dexter over. She looked into him and discovered his name and that he is a blood spatter expert with Miami Metro. She is buddies with a file clerk who told her their department's blood guy pulled her file to show to Dexter. She warns him to stay away and makes clear to him that she knows where he lives.
Dexter wants to call the Kruger mission off. Harry convinces him she doesn't know who she is dealing with.
Lundy left a voicemail on Dexter's machine looking for Debra. Dexter tells Harry the key with Kruger is let her think she is in control of the situation.
Dexter calls Kruger's buddy in records. He uses a fake voice and pretends to be looking into Rae's file on behalf of Miami PD.
Maria also comes to Dexter about the relationship with Angel. She's concerned with revealing their relationship the wrong way. Dexter tells Debra that Lundy called looking for her.
Kruger follows Dexter to a gas station. She follows him into the men's room and hands him the Rae file. He tells her he has proof she murdered her family and is going to tell his superiors what he knows. She puts a gun to his head and chest, threatening to kill and frame him for rape. But each time Dexter convinces her blood evidence will prove she did not shoot him in self defense. Finally she challenges him to tell everything, because no one will believe his story.
Debra goes to Lundy's place. She begins kissing him and goes inside.
Dexter is waiting in the dark for Kruger when she breaks into his house. After a violent struggle during which Dexter's new mug is shattered, he is able to get the hypodermic into her neck and knock her out.
Dexter then uses Kruger's daughter's room as his kill site. He has bought her a ticket out of the country to explain her sudden disappearance. Kruger admits she "couldn't breathe" in the family dynamic. She tells Dexter "you can't hide who you are," and thinks he will eventually have to choose.
Dexter has a revelation regarding just how much he does not want to lose his family. "That's the difference between us," Dexter tells his prey as he plunges a knife into her chest.
Rita calls to say she is coming back early. Dexter has to scramble to put the house together before they get home. The family comes home and Dexter joins them on the couch.
After their sexual reunion, Lundy walks Debra to her car. She feels guilty for not breaking up with Anton first, but says her feelings for Lundy are still there. They decide to go forward with the relationship and "set this right" with Anton.
Just then one, then two more shots are heard as both Debra and Lundy crumble to the parking lot pavement. Lundy is relieved of his watch by an unseen person as a stricken Debra gasps "stay with me."
