Quotes

  • 6 : I saw a seagull this morning.

70 : Some kind of bird?

6 : Yeah, that's right, some kind of bird. And I got to thinking, either you're a long way from home... or we're closer to the beach than I realized.

70 : And what is the beach?

6 : Oh, it's where you go on vacation.

70 : Tell us about your vacation.

6 : Not much to tell. Me and my brother, we take the train to the sea. We called it the edge of the world. A giant saltwater rod for him, a little fishing net for me. Wait a minute. Did you just say "us"? Who's "us"?

Shadow 70 : [appearing from the shadows]  He is me. We are a me.

70 : I find it conducive to work in this way. I can engage.

    Shadow 70 : And I can reflect.

    6 : I think we're done here.

70 : 6, wait. There is no requirement that you share your thoughts here with me. Us. Simply to have them.

  • Lucy : Tell me why you resigned, please.

Michael : We work on a floor called Analysis. We don't know who works on the next floor up. We never see them. I started to notice something, and like a good boy, I reported up.

Lucy : And what was it?

Michael : People changing. Too many people. So I sent in the report and got a three-word reply. "Cease and desist."

Lucy : But if you could find out why Solutions wanted you to stop...

Michael : Who are you? You work in Summakor. You said Solutions. I didn't say Solutions. No more bullshit. Who are you?

Lucy : Yes, I-I work there.

Michael : You sit there, you look at me and you tell me why you're here.

Lucy : You think you resigned. Maybe you did. But it's not over. They still control you.

  • 6 : Why is it so dark in here?

70 : Why does it feel so dark to you?

6 : Well, my home is not my home. My brother is not my brother. Nothing's real.

70 : Then what feels real to you, 6?

    6 : Why should I tell you?

70 : Because it bothers you. Doesn't it? You can't cure your thinking with your thinking, 6. You have to hand it over. There is something in you which you feel the need to find. You feel the need to resolve it. Am I right?

  • Lucy : You can tell a lot about a person from their apartment.

Michael : If you know how to look.

  • 2 : Don't you recognize your brother, 6?

    6 : He's not my brother.

2 : Why would a man deny the existence of his own brother when he's standing right in front of him?

6 : Because he's sick. Demented. Isn't that what you want me to think?

2 : Let us concern ourselves only with evidence.

16 : Brought these from home.

[showing 6 a picture of them as kids]

    16 : Remember that?

6 : This stuff can be fake.

2 : And does your flesh also lie, 6?

16 : You fell out of a tree and you cut your arm.

6 : [instinctively touching a scar on his arm]  You could've done it while I was sleeping.

16 : Buddy, we just want you back the way you were.

2 : Perhaps therapy might work. Yes? What do you say, 6? Give the talking cure a try.

6 : Oh, you would like that, wouldn't you? Meddling with my mind.

2 : What are you afraid of, 6? A glimpse into your psyche discovering that you are the problem after all?

    6 : I'm not afraid.

2 : Good. The sessions are booked. A man with nothing to hide is a man with nothing to find.

  • 70 : Something happened in you. A memory. Your fishing trip, perhaps?

    Shadow 70 : Your brother?

6 : Do you think it would help me to tell you?

    70 : I know it would.

6 : 765 is in love with 23-30. 23-56 is pregnant to 46-5. Now, 913 had an affair with 23-30, so 765 is jealous of 23-30.

Shadow 70 : He's running rings around us.

6 : I see your fear, 70. I've been watching you. You know you're a prisoner here just like me. But you don't wanna know. Well, I refuse to become you.

  • 6 : I do remember something about this place. That something happened here.

    313 : Doesn't that make it true?

6 : They do it to me somehow. They do it to all of us.

    [counting his steps]

6 : One. Two. Three. Five. Six.

[stopping, he begins digging into the sand and finds a buried metal box; he opens it and removes the contents, a scrap of paper]

    6 : "Hello to you, whoever you are. I'm 6. I'm 8 years old."

313 : You sound like such a clever little 6.

    6 : It's a trick.

313 : You knew where it was. You went straight to it.

6 : It has to be a trick. It has to be.

  • 313 : Try to ask yourself, do you really think that whole family, those kids, are living their lives just to deceive you?

    6 : Maybe.

313 : If you're right, there's no way out of here. What then? Look, can't we have a life here? Isn't that something? To people like your brother, his family...

6 : No, no, no. That's what they want us to think. 313, you ever been on a boat?

    313 : Why would I?

    6 : You don't know what you're missing.

  • 6 : You have a lovely family.

16 : I know it. And I'm proud of it.

6 : But it's not real, is it? And I'm not your brother. My brother's dead, and I'm somebody else.

16 : 6, it kills me to see you like this.

6 : Did you take anything?

    16 : What?

6 : Papers from my pocket.

    16 : No.

6 : Because maybe you work for them. I don't know. I only know that none of this is real.

16 : If you won't go to your therapy, then I will. I have to. Because let me tell you, I just want my brother back.

  • 6 : [in the middle of the desert]  What is this place?

    16 : It's the ruins.

6 : Were there ever trains?

16 : I don't get you, 6. It's the ruins. It's the same as it's always been. We came here every day when we were kids. We played soldiers and hide and seek. We used to call it the edge of the world. Remember? How could you forget that?

6 : I guess I do feel something being here. I can't... I can't deny it. But why? Why should I feel belonging... when I've never been here before?

  • Michael : Let me tell you something interesting. Numbers on a phone, how they work. They have a logic, a purpose.

Lucy : I get the feeling this is not merely information.

Michael : When you borrowed my phone, the number you dialed... it wasn't a number.

Lucy : That's pretty observant. What kind of a guy notices stuff like that?

Michael : Just someone suspicious. You didn't make a call.

  • 16 : How do you fancy getting behind the wheel?

6 : Why do you think I can drive this thing?

    16 : You're the best there is, 6.

6 : But I've never driven a bus in my life.

16 : [laughing with his co-workers]  Listen to him, boys. How about you just get behind the wheel and see if it all comes back to you, huh?

  • Lucy : You really are suspicious of people, aren't you?

Michael : You would be too if you worked there.

Lucy : You haven't told me where you work.

Michael : I am... I was an analyst for a company called Summakor. We collect CCTV footage from around the world. I watch people. I see things. I collect data and statistics. My job is to look for patterns, how we live, trying to find out what is going on. But finding out what is going on is not good news.

Lucy : Is that why you resigned?

Michael : Why do you ask?

Lucy : Well, why shouldn't I be interested in you?

Michael : Sorry, it's... it's what that place does to you.

Lucy : What you need is a distraction.

Michael : You know, I watch people like us doing things like this, and I write about them in my reports.

Lucy : So if you were watching us now, what would you see?

Michael : Two people... a man and a woman in a room for one night. Because that's all they're capable of anymore.

Lucy : Please tell me that is not true.

    Michael : It's only a report.

Lucy : It's what you believe.

    Michael : It's what I see.

  • 147 : You know, I'm all for a wild-goose chase. I'm an affirmative kind of guy generally speaking, but I can hear big water? Somewhere there's the sound of splashing? Please.

6 : Do you mind if we just shut up and drive, please?

    147 : Sounds good.

  • Lucy : I noticed you sitting on your own. I decided that if I spoke to you, you might wanna get to know me. Is that so bad?

Michael : Why tonight? Why choose the day I resign?

    Lucy : Well, maybe it's a coincidence.
