The already-established Slovakian photographer Martin Kollár flips between the lenses of photography and cinematography regularly and 5 October, unveiled in the festival section "As Long As It Takes", has the best of both worlds. As a cinematographer, he has lensed the award-winning Slovakian documentaries Cooking History (2008) and docu-triptych Velvet Terrorists (2013). Besides photography and cinematography, he stands behind the camera not only as operator but as director. He made a short film Autoportrait (2012), as the title suggests about the obvious subject, even though he does not appear on the screen throughout the film. Retrospective to include films from Danis Tanovic, Cristi Puiu, Mira Fornay and more.
A total of 50 films are to make up the retrospective Eastern Promises: Autobiography of Eastern Europe at the 62nd San Sebastian Film Festival (Sept 19-27).
The line-up includes movies produced since 2000 in the countries that lived under Soviet influence after the Second World War and include some that were never released theatrically in Spain.
Several directors of films in the retrospective will attend the festival to present their works including Sarunas Bartas (Lithuania), Kristina Buožytė (Lithuania), Marian Crisan (Romania), Mira Fornay (Slovakia), Bohdan Sláma (Czech Republic), Malgorzata Szumowska (Poland) and Anna Viduleja (Latvia).
A book will be published to accompany the retrospective with contributions from journalists and critics across Europe.

The Melbourne International Film Festival has announced this year’s favourite films, as voted by the audience.
Nz’s Boy (directed by Taika Waititi and opening in Australia on August 26) was the top film, while Bill Cunningham: New York was the favourite documentary. Australian features The Wedding Party and Summer Coda were also in the top 10, at numbers six and 10 respectively

This is a not a festival report because the festival it deals with – Dok 2009, Leipzig – happened several months ago. But it is about what film juries appear to prefer today especially in the documentary medium. Leipzig is a beautiful city in the eastern part of Germany and holds a wonderful film festival each year for documentary and animated films called Dok Leipzig. Apart from the competition sections for international and German documentaries and the corresponding ones for animated films, the festival also has (among several other things) a young cinema section - called Generation Dok- and retrospectives dedicated to masters of the medium.
Dok Leipzig is a major festival and brilliantly organized.
