The ideas have a lot of promise...

One of the folks responsible for making "Privacy" asked me to give the film a viewing and comment on it. Such a request comes to me periodically--probably because I have reviewed more short films than just about anyone. I love short films and it's often exciting to see young talent in action--you can see such promise. Well, I was not 100% thrilled with "Privacy"--it was rough. But it also showed a lot of promise.

The story is set almost completely in one small room in a B&B in which there are two single beds. Again and again, the camera shows different couples coming to the room for a variety of reasons. The idea of showing the various reactions to the room and the relationships made this VERY interesting. For example, in one case, a man and woman are there for romance and in another the love had obviously cooled a very long time ago--and the difference between these couples is sad and poignant. Another features a funny little vignette involving a man who has a fetish for pillow fights! And finally, one involves a celebrity having a tryst. All these little vignettes were interesting but way too brief--seeing a full-length film or a longer short that allowed these relationships to be explored more thoroughly and slowly would have been great--and I really, really hope they do this at a later time.

Unfortunately, the film also spends too much time on the celebrity and his affair and the entire end of the film follows up on this. This just doesn't fit the style of the rest of the couples--there is no follow-up with them and it seems that this actually would have been a great idea for its own film. In other words, it was like two films--not one. Focusing on only one of the ideas would have made a far better film--and this is what I have suggested to them as a future project. Good luck with this and any other endeavors--just try to keep it focused like a laser--sticking to one theme and exploring it completely.

Well worth a view because the film shows promise.
