Disney and the BBC really don’t want any spoilers revealed for today’s debut of the latest season of Doctor Who. Fair enough, but I’m here to tell you that you will hear some of the worst music ever in these opening episodes of Ncuti Gatwa’s hopefully long run as the famed Time Lord.
Crossing timelines and absent granddaughters aside, that’s the point.
Since Rwandan-born Gatwa’s debut in December last year, his Doctor Who has already flipped a lot of scripts on what the Tardis travelling Doctor is and should be. Yes, the Fifteenth Doctor is the first Black and the first openly Queer incarnation of the Gallifreyan since the iconic British series debuted in 1963, as well as the first person not born in the UK to play the Time Lord Both those representations are long overdue and wonderful, but the real thing about this...

The legal thriller is back!
That’s the message sent by the new teaser for “Presumed Innocent,” Apple TV+’s limited series adaptation of Scott Turow’s 1987 novel, which was previously adapted in 1990 as a film starring Harrison Ford.
The eight-part series hails from superproducers David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams, with Kelley serving as writer and showrunner. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Rusty Sabich, a Chicago deputy prosecutor whose life gets thrown into chaos when he’s suspected of murdering Carolyn (Renate Reinsve), a colleague with whom he had an affair. Per Apple, “The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.” Throw death in there, and you’ve got every major theme covered!
The ensemble cast also includes Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga as well as Bill Camp, O-t Fagbenle, Chase Infiniti, Elizabeth Marvel,...

Prolific British writer Sarah Phelps, whose television credits include A Very British Scandal, Dublin Murders and long-running BBC soap drama Eastenders, encouraged an audience of writers at Dublin’s Storyhouse festival not to get discouraged by trolls or hate mail for their work.
In a frank and impassioned session at the screenwriters festival, Phelps recalled a time when she received hate mail for a plot line she had written into Eastenders and imparted advice on how she dealt with someone aggressively putting down her work.
“One thing I would say to all of you, as creators and makers is that, if and when that happens to you, you want to put it away and not look at but you should look at it,” she said. “Do something to it that robs it of its power. Put it in a frame. Shine a light on it and stare at it until...

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

How well do fact-based limited and anthology series perform at the Emmys? (Spoiler alert: very well)
Just as limited and anthology series based on real events have taken over the TV landscape, they have taken over the Emmys. But how well have programs of this particular genre actually gone over with the academy throughout the past few years?
Let’s take a look back at all nominations earned by limited and anthology series starting in 2015; that’s the year in which the rules were tweaked to require that a program can only compete as a limited series if it has a minimum of two episodes with a total running time of at least 150 minutes, tells a complete, non-recurring story, and doesn’t have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.
This rule change came just a year after limited series (referred to as “miniseries” at the time) and TV movies were once again split up into separate program categories, undoing a three-year-old change that consolidated the two awards.

Norman Scott has condemned his portrayal in the BBC’s A Very English Scandal.
The English model was played by Ben Whishaw in the 2018 miniseries. Whishaw won an Emmy, Bafta, and Golden Globe for his performance.
A Very English Scandal saw Hugh Grant play former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe, who was acquitted of conspiring with a hitman to kill his alleged ex-lover Scott. Homosexuality was illegal at the time.
Scott appeared on the podcast British Scandal: Jeremy Thorpe, and praised Whishaw’s performance but admitted that he was “very cross” over his portrayal in the drama.
Scott, 83, said: “Ben was being a very good actor, he had met me, he knew me, and I hoped that he would be me…
“I think it was very – I can say it because it’s what I believe – it was a black comedy. It was very unkind. But Ben played me very well.

Stonehouse, the new true crime series debuting on BritBox, tells the bizarre story of John Stonehouse, a member of the British Parliament in the 1970s. Most true crime stories feature murder, but Stonehouse’s story is about a man whose desire for success, fame, and power turned him into a spy who faked his own death. It sounds serious, but Stonehouse is actually a hilarious story that has disturbing parallels to our modern politics. With a stellar cast of actors and top-notch creators, this is a unique three-episode limited series worth checking out (read our review).

Writer John Preston (A Very British Scandal) talked to me about the inspiration for the story and how he adapted it when the stars were cast. Director John S. Ruth Negga, the Oscar and Tony-nominated “Passing” actress, has joined Apple TV+’s limited series “Presumed Innocent,” to star alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, who is in final negotiations for the project.
The murder-thriller, inspired by Scott Turow’s acclaimed novel, hails from David E. Kelley, Dustin Thomason and executive producer J.J. Abrams. Turow’s work was adapted into the 1990 film of the same name, starring Harrison Ford.
“Presumed Innocent” is billed as a courtroom thriller that follows the story of a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorneys’ office when one of its own is suspected of the crime. Kelley, the multi-Emmy award winner behind the likes of “Big Little Lies” and “L.A. Law,” reimagines “Presumed Innocent,” exploring obsession, sex, politics and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.

When we caught up last Spring, Claire Foy was thoroughly engaged and enthusiastic about her work in “A Very British Scandal.” But when I asked her about her then-upcoming role in Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” her eyes lit up like fireworks on the river Thames. And we certainly know why now. Polley’s critically acclaimed drama has already been honored by AFI, the National Board of Review and will land the Robert Altman ensemble honor from the Spirit Awards next year.

The queen lives! Well, sort of. The three talented actresses who’ve portrayed (or will portray) Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s award-winning royal drama “The Crown” are set to be everywhere this awards season.
Claire Foy, who played the late monarch in the first two seasons of the historical (but not always historically accurate) drama series and won two Emmys, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe (2017) for her performance, stars in Sarah Polley’s newest film, “Women Talking.” Adapted from Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name, the movie follows a group of women from an isolated religious community as they grapple with the realization that they’ve been repeatedly drugged and raped. Slated for a limited theatrical release in December, it has been making the festival rounds since premiering at the Telluride Film Festival in early September. Vision is eyeing his own TV series: Marvel is developing a WandaVision spinoff for Disney+ with Paul Bettany set to reprise his role as Vision, according to our sister site Deadline.
The series — tentatively titled Vision Quest, with a writers’ room reportedly starting up next week — will be about Vision “trying to regain his memory and humanity” after the events of WandaVision. (Viewers will remember that Vision, after his death in Avengers: Infinity War, was resurrected as part of his wife Wanda’s sitcom dream world, while the original Vision was reconstructed and reactivated by S.W.O.R.D.

“Vision Quest,” a new Marvel Studios series focusing on Paul Bettany’s title android superhero character, is in the works at Disney+, TheWrap has learned. The series, along with “Agatha: House of Harkness,” marks the second spinoff show based on the popular “WandaVision.”
The show is set to open a writers room next week, and will focus on Vision’s attempts to regain his memory and humanity. The character made his last appearance in the eponymous “WandaVision,” which was set after his death in “Avengers: Infinity War” and showed him as a projection of Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) grief.
Toward the end of “WandaVision,” the so-called White Vision was employed as a weapon to destroy Wanda, the fake Vision and their creation of the Westview anomaly. Given the fact that the character has experienced a “rebirth” of sorts, the series is likely to pick up in the aftermath of the show’s finale,...

Emily Maitlis, whose notorious interview with Prince Andrew forced the disgraced royal to announce his departure from public life, has revealed she believes the prince “had behaved rather well.”
The former BBC presenter, who interviewed the prince for its flagship Newsnight programme, told The Times that the duke’s behaviour compared favourably with most politicians.
She said, “I felt he’d behaved rather well. He had given us this hour in the palace and was willing to talk about stuff. Most politicians now won’t even talk about their own policies. So at least he had guts.”
And she shared her sentiment that the prince had also enjoyed the interview, unaware of the grief it would bring him. She said, “He spent a long time afterwards chatting to us and allowing us to take shots going along the corridors. He even gave me this guided tour, saying, ‘Her Majesty is just up these stairs.

Since the TV academy began regularly honoring original music scores in the 1960s, there has essentially always been a clear distinction between compositions for continuing and limited series. The Best Music for Limited Series Emmy category was established early on in order to adequately recognize the music behind single-season or one-off scripted programs apart from traditional comedy and drama series. This year’s five contenders are about as eclectic as can be, with plots that collectively span multiple centuries and continents.
The current Best Music for Limited Series nominees are “1883” (Paramount+), “Moon Knight” (Disney+), “Station Eleven” (HBO Max), “A Very British Scandal” (Prime Video) and “The White Lotus” (HBO). To determine which one is most likely to take the gold, let’s take a look at each score individually. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions in this and 26 other Creative Arts categories by September 3.

The race is on to bring the already notorious ‘Wagatha Christie’ defamation trial to our screens, following this week’s conclusion at London’s High Court.
The battle between footballers’ wives Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy (married to Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy respectively) concluded after two and a half long years, with the judge ruling in favour of Rooney. Vardy had originally brought the case to court, claiming defamation after Rooney unveiled her as the culprit behind a roll-call of stories about her and her family leaked to the press. Rooney had laid a trap for Vardy restricting her Instagram account so that she knew who could see her posts, leading to the day she announced on social media the results of her investigation, saying, “It’s….. Rebekah Vardy.” Thus was #WagathaChristie born.
When Vardy’s case for libel finally arrived in the British courtroom, weeks of witness statements...

“It’s about two characters who are reaching for something,” reveals composer Nathan Barr about the limited series “A Very British Scandal.” The three-episode drama recounts the marriage and bitter divorce between Ian and Margaret Campbell, the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, played by Paul Bettany and Claire Foy. Barr’s score has been nominated for an Emmy, his fifth career nomination. He previously won for composing the main title music of the Netflix limited series “Hollywood.” Check out our exclusive video interview with Barr above.
The composer’s inspiration came from his belief that both Ian and Margaret were looking for things that were completely separate from any kind of love. For Ian, it was the desire for Margaret’s money, while Margaret was attracted to the idea of being the wife of a duke. Barr says that those elements informed the melodies he crafted. “The score was really...

There are 136 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Directing, which will yield six nominations. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), while the other nominees were “Hamilton” (Thomas Kail), “Mare of Easttown” (Craig Zobel), “Wandavision” (Matt Shakman), “The Underground Railroad” (Barry Jenkins) and two episodes of “I May Destroy You” (Sam Miller for “Eyes Eyes Eyes Eyes” and Miller and Michaela Coel for “Ego Death”).
For six of the last eight years, the Best Limited/Movie Directing category has rewarded directors who helmed the entirety of their limited series. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. Miniseries that also only submitted their sole director for the whole series, per the Emmy ruling, include “Gaslit” for Matt Ross,...

One year after separately conquering the three drama acting Emmy categories, “The Crown” castmates Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman, and Claire Foy could all find themselves facing off in the same race. As the respective stars of “The First Lady,” “Landscapers,” and “A Very British Scandal,” they are all viable candidates for the 2022 Best Movie/Limited Actress prize, which would be the second Emmy earned by Colman and the third for either Anderson or Foy. Scroll down to see our 2022 Emmy predictions for Lead Actress (TV Movie/Limited Series).
This year’s Movie/Limited Actress lineup could also feature up to four previous winners of the award. Dating furthest back is Barbara Hershey, who won in 1990 for “A Killing in a Small Town” and is now being considered for “The Manor.” She is followed chronologically by 2010 (“Temple Grandin”) winner Claire Danes (“The Essex Serpent”) and 2017 (“Big Little Lies”) winner Nicole Kidman...

There are 110 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Writing, resulting in six nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “I May Destroy You” (Michaela Coel) and the other nominees were “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), “Mare of Easttown” (Brad Inglesby) and three episodes from “Wandavision”.
The low number of entries in this year’s Best Limited/Movie Writing category can be attributed to the fact that all the top contenders have submitted only one or two episodes from their series when given the option. Danny Strong, a previous winner for “Game Change” in this category a decade ago, entered the “Dopesick” finale, “The People vs. Purdue Pharma.” Other programs that submitted their final episodes were “Maid” (“Snaps”) and “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle”) by their respective showrunners Molly Smith Metzler and Patrick Somerville, which is not a bad method given that seven...

At last year’s Primetime Emmys, the Best Limited Series award went to “The Queen’s Gambit,” giving Netflix its first win in the category. The streamer has several new one-off series to submit this year, including “Inventing Anna,” “Midnight Mass,” and “Maid,” the last of which is predicted to be its best hope to pull off a repeat in this race. It does, however, face stiff competition from HBO, which has produced six of the last 10 winners, including “Chernobyl” (2019) and “Watchmen” (2020). Scroll down to see our 2022 Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series.
HBO could dominate the limited series category this year with such strong contenders as “The Staircase,” “Station Eleven,” and “The White Lotus.” The network had two horses in the 2021 race with “I May Destroy You” and “Mare of Easttown.” Last year’s remaining two nominees, “The Underground Railroad” and “WandaVision,” streamed on Amazon and Disney+ respectively. This time,...
