Slightly Better Than Expected
oz_13_was_taken17 December 2022
I hit play on my TV expecting to watch 5 minutes of this and turn it off. Surprisingly there were a few really funny parts that kept me watching, mainly Jackie, Karen's deceased best friend. She was the best character. I was expecting some Christian garbage that you see on Pureflix but it had a lot of dirty jokes and it wasn't overly preachy. The actors do a decent job, which is uncommon for a low-budget movie. I really hope more "Karens" watch this so they can learn to mind their own business and not call the police over minor inconveniences. It's not a classic, but I'm not angry I watched it. Maybe I'll watch it again in a few years during the holiday season.

Not bad....
geoffwright-4770730 December 2023
Watching this on Freeserve, my assumption was that.it would be a cheapo, and it is. It is a bit amateur, and kind of lurches across a range of emotions, from humourous to silly, to cringeworthy, to poignant.

I didn't like Michele Sims's portrayal of Karen, whereas to my mind a "proper" Karen is simply stressed, deluded and possibly on something, this one has more of a genuinely malicious streak.

It's pretty predictable, which isn't a problem as we already know the basic premise. It's basically a silly, occasionally juvenile seasonal fun, and whilst there are plenty of holes the viewer could pick, ironically at this time of year, to spend much time doing so would reveal the viewer's inner Karen.

A low-budget, paint-by-numbers bore. Bah humdrum!
northwellschick30 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
You'll probably recognize the titular Karen from her carvana ads and there's a reason that's the level of celebrity you'll find in this movie. She's clearly got a nice presence but there's a sameness that settles in, and there's very little to care about in her portrayal, not an easy feat for any Scrooge substitute, especially as written here. This watches like a third-rate hallmark embarrassment, but written by a college sketch writer, where everyone is two-dimensional, and actual human behavior takes a back seat to accommodate a lot of bits that strain for payoffs we've seen a thousand times elsewhere. Karen's car hits a kid in a bike and her concern is over a possibly scratched front bumper. Hilarious.

We rented this because of the positive revues, which seriously had to have been written by someone in it or a relative of the same. If I'd have seen this at a movie theater I, like Karen, would've demanded to see the supervisor for a refund.

Failed to Hit The Mark
brodyderek4 December 2023
This cinematic offering, though intriguing in its premise, failed to hit the mark for me. Falling into the grey zone between good and bad, it struggled to embody the festive spirit one expects from a Christmas movie. The narrative lacked the humor that typically defines the genre, leaving the audience wanting for those hearty laughs that make holiday films memorable. What's more, the predictability of the plot hindered any potential surprises, robbing the viewing experience of the excitement that comes with unexpected twists. Regrettably, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this movie to others, as it lacks the essential elements that would make it a standout choice for festive or comedic entertainment.

Garbage. Not even being a Karen
tpp7210 December 2022
This was horrible. Had to turn it off. I want a refund from Amazon. She's not even a Karen. Whoever wrote this needs to go on TikTok and learn what a real Karen. This was clearly a lazy attempt to get some holiday sales. I should've known when I watch the first few minutes of the movie that it was the same as the whole trailer. That should've let me know right away to not even waste another minute. This is so over-the-top and ridiculous. The characters that are introduced. If you're going to have Christmas Karen, you can at least make it about how Karen's actually act in the world. Do not recommend.

Much better than expected
gee-1525 December 2022
An entitled "Karen" who intimidates and bullies all those around her discovers the meaning of Christmas via three ghosts who show her her past, present and future. I only expected to watch this for a few minutes but found it quite amusing and even touching at times. It's obviously the umpteenth version of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" with the new cultural icon (Karen) at its center but it's a fun movie despite the well worn plot. Michele Simms is really quite enjoyable as the horrible Karen who might have some good reasons for being so horrible. Rolin Alexis, Leyla Lawrence and Lee Karlinsky are also quite entertaining with their modern takes on the Dickensian ghosts (I particularly liked the portrayal of the ghost of Christmas Yet to Come as a nervous gamer dude who still retains a menacing edge.). It lacks the professional sheen of a big Hollywood release and there are a few awkward moments where the screenplay doesn't quite work but it's been awhile since a movie surprised me and this one definitely did.

It's watchable, just.
Theponykid24 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Begins very cliche to set the scene, but it's really not very believable as it just feels corny like you are inside one live action Karen meme, the character is just not convincing. Then it goes into a silly fantasy phase which is very predictable where she's dragged through her past, present and future to see how she affects people.. The character (Karen) does not seem as if she's being impacted by her insight, nor the lessons she's being taught, at all. I'm not sure if it's poor acting or script writing here, but it seems like she hasn't learnt a thing, so when she wakes up as a dramatically changed woman, it becomes a bit cringeworthy to watch. I realise the director was obviously going for a comedy here and I love a good laugh and can find humour in most things, but I definitely didn't laugh throughout this movie, it was more of a constant groan and eye roll. The acting is B grade at best. The movie is watchable but it's certainly not something I'd be interested in watching a second time.

Chanced it on a whim
geesim5 December 2022
I was looking for a new Xmas movie, something lighthearted and funny. Something to half watch whilst wrapping presents and enjoying a few too many JD's.

Well, I got through the JDs but not the present wrapping because I ended up watching the movie instead and loved it!

Never heard of any of the cast or the director but I sure recognised the story.

Yes it's a different take on scrooge and sure if you're an anti-woke angry kind of Karen or Ken then you best avoiding this.

But if you're not highly strung about modern life and are looking for a few good laughs and some pretty decent entertainment then give this a shot I am sure you will love it too.

If you don't like it, just call the assistant manager haha.

Stupid!!
mookiebns24 December 2022
Not funny at all! Acting is horrible! Special effects are garbage! I don't understand how this movie got a green light to be produced.

A Christmas Carol had a message, but the writing, acting, and screen adaptation was a lot better than this junk.

The ending had me wondering if the actress was in a mental institution, and every scene the audience sees is in the mind of the main character only. I didn't feel concern or compassion for anyone in this very bad movie, and I didn't feel like celebrating Christmas or spreading any kind of cheer.

I do NOT recommend watching this crap. Not even if you have alcohol. Trust me, it won't help.

A really fun Film
Kid Abyssmal30 November 2022
As a fan of Christmas Carol stories, but having a harsh hatred of Karens, I was curious going into this one how I was going to enjoy it. I really did overall! The cast had a lot of fun with it, and it's a very modern take on the classic tale. It had quite a few laugh out loud sequences while also tugging at the heartstrings at the right moments. It really completes the gambit of an emotional rollercoaster, all wrapped up in a Christmas bow. I think this will definitely fair better with an older audience, who might be exhausted at the amount of Carol options on streaming. But for sure, there are a lot of "Karens" out there who could take a lesson from this one!

The humorous dialogue made me laugh on the inside and outside at times.
trinaboice26 October 2023
IN A NUTSHELL: As soon as I heard this title, I was intrigued.

Karen is an entitled middle-aged woman whose demanding nature has alienated her neighbors and family. After a series of instances displaying her privilege and prejudice, Karen receives an 'intervention' by some unconventional spirits.

THINGS I LIKED: I hate never seen Michele Simms in anything before. She did a great job painting the "Karen" we've all come across over the years.

Each of the ghosts was unique and entertaining.

I love segways! It always makes me laugh when someone rides one in a movie.

Entertaining special effects.

The humorous dialogue made me laugh on the inside and outside at times.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: It's definitely a low-budget movie. I imagined how much better it could have been with a bigger budget and an A-list starlet in the role.

There are some bad acting moments.

You probably won't recognize most of the actors in this.

So many offensive moments that will make you cringe.

So many missed opportunities in the script.

TIPS FOR PARENTS: Profanity Some crude references.

Crude conversation in a bathroom Lots of alcohol Racist comments The ghost of Christmas Past is a Black transvestite.

Bad Karen!
beammeup-2955430 November 2023
I cannot believe that people thought this movie was good or funny. We suffered through the whole thing, I should have shut it off after ten minutes. The movie is incredibly bad. The script is, a slanted take on A Christmas Carol, utterly ridiculous. It's clearly a cheap movie, the lighting and camera work is amateur. The sets are cheap, the special effects are similarly amateur. The music is either really bad or cliche or both. The acting is terrible, and terrible is being kind. Karen being a Karen was almost tolerable, Karen being a good person is the epitome of cringe worthy. Please, don't watch this drivel.

See it for what it is
OneAnjel25 December 2023
First off, I note the overall rating is just over 4 stars yet the reviews are mainly high stars. That tells me a lot of people disliked it but didn't actually write a review. Secondly, one needs to see this for what it is: it's liberal fare aimed at a mainly black audience. We (mixed family) ended up liking the film enough to watch it all the way through. You can't go wrong with a twist on the classic Christmas Carol, I figured. There was some decent acting though horrible costumes imo. We all should be tolerant and loving. We have the classic Karen although extremely over the top for this production. But what most people don't know is Karen is a term coined by blacks meaning a snobby white pitch who is demeaning and has a supremicy complex, especially a wealthy one. I know already my honesty here will give the moderators pause but I'm not being anything but honest about this film. If the film made it through hopefully my review will, as well. The crazed way Karen here acts and thinks is typical of how some people honestly see the original Karens, ending with the non-Karens being given a bunch of free stuff. I wouldn't watch this with kids because it does perpetuate the poor us; stingy rude them propaganda. But intelligent adults can find some entertainment here. If you want a family Christmas film that is entertaining and culturally diverse, I recommend Jingle Jangle with Forest Whittaker. Now, that is a new classic.

A fever dream of a movie
TheBeardedWonder23 December 2023
Wow where to even start with this one. I woke up the next morning and felt like I'd been through my own Xmas Carol rendition - did this movie really happen last night??? Yeah I was inebriated but still I'm not sure if this movie is real or not.

Some of it is straight up asylum style david decoteau levels of bad acting and sets. Some of it is actually funny jokes that work. Some of it is almost meta and making fun of itself.

It's a retelling of a Christmas Carol with the 3 ghosts and everything. One is a zombie looking homeless lady with a sign in the street, one is a fabulous gay man with amazing fashion sense, one is an Australian 50s housewife who may or may not be pregnant, and the last is a skater/EDM looking 20 year old kid.

Imagine if Ebeneezer Scrooge spent the entire opening act complaining about various drinks and sending them back - then apply that same drubk logic to the rest of the story - and you get the idea of this movie. Oh and don't forget the CHILDHOOD CANCER SUBPLOT.

You've honestly just gotta watch it cause the end is wild and makes no sense.

Solid, fun movie
alatlantic12 December 2023
This is a low budget, fun movie. I could see some people being turned off by that fact - the effects are bad, the writing is so so, and the story is obviously just A Christmas Carol with the main character changed out. But what these types of movies offer is carefree fun without ever taking itself too seriously. No 30 minutes of dialogue, needless romance, 'artistic choices', etc that bigger, more expensive projects tend to get into.

That out of the way, it's a really fun movie. It's ridiculous enough to make you laugh a few times, but stays true enough to the original to actually make for a really heartwarming movie that'll have you choking up by the end. And while none of the actors are big stars, they for the most part pull their weight really well.

I wish more would make movies this fun. Highly recommend.

A delightful twist on a classic tale.
grimlock666627 November 2023
At first glance, A Christmas Karen feels like more of the same story you've seen multiple times a year, and in many ways it is, but the fact that it is does not take away from the charm, entertainment, and heart that it brings. Michele Simms is so delightfully terrible as Karen, so much so that it took me a little longer than usual to empathize with her, but eventually I came around. I like how all of the ghosts are unique in their characterizations and how they are all memorable in their own way. I absolutely adore A Christmas Carol, and this modern retelling does not disappoint in warming the heart and making me smile just as much as any other version of the tale.

Funny!!!!!
mikesterge18 December 2022
I watched this with zero expectations. It was hilarious! I didn't read any reviews until after I watched it. The only reasons anyone would give it a terrible review would be because they are, themselves, a Karen. The cast was filled with new actors. They did amazing. It was nice to not have to think beyond a Hollywood star to get to the character.

There were many current cultural references which made it relevant. They could have overdone the whole Karen thing but they did a great job balancing the humor with the original story line of the almost 200 year classic story. Who knows if it will become a "must watch" Christmas movie down the road but it sure works for now.

Unexpected delight
kaygustafa-7055220 December 2022
This is a movie we watched with no expectations. It was really funny and enjoyable. The acting was descent for people I hadn't heard of and this take on a Christmas Carol was fresh and original. This was nice because a Christmas Carol has been worn out so many times but they put different and new life into it. I will be watching this every year because it gave me a laugh and had a good story line. I recommend this movie. I'm not sure how anyone gave it less than a 5 because it was original and well written and out together! It also pokes fun at so many "Karen's" we could run into! Can't wait to watch it again.

Sophisticated, Real and absolutely funny
ytjcwbb13 December 2022
This movie was a holiday surprise. It was laugh out loud funny and had a modern twist to an old classic. "Karen" was very relatable and portrayed that role well. Good casting, excellent script and directing. This is worth your time watching, a new Christmas tradition for our family. There were some touching elements to the story, definitely a story written about inclusion. Fun for all ages! This is one you can watch over and over again. A unique and fresh take on the ghost of Christmas past, present and future. Good special effects, excellent costumes and scenes. Jon Binkowski did a fabulous job!

Rolling on the Floor Laughing is real with this comedy
cannolireview17 December 2022
Finally, a new holiday movie that isn't following the too-sweet model of most. This is some wild fun - fall of your chair, "stop the movie while I dry my eyes" hilarious.

"Karen" is real, a Karen you love to hate. We all know the basic storyline, but she is so good at being despicable that I couldn't see how it could possibly work - and yet, it did, and more.

The situations, backgrounds of the Karen, sets, even costumes: it's all very well done. Add the special effects and the fresh comedy and it's a film we will watch over and over.

No spoilers here: this movie is anything but predictable.

A terrific surprise
elysetimm26 November 2022
This was actually a really good film. Admittedly I went into it expecting the "Karen" gimmick to be overdone and uninspired but I came away from this movie totally pleased. The dialogue was extremely funny most of the time and not really corny (which this could have easily leaned into). Don't get me wrong, it definitely has some silly moments but they were fine. It was a jaunty spin on the old "Scrooge" plot. Obviously we have all seen that done to death but this included some very fresh and contemporary spins on it. The actors did a great job and I recommend this for a fun Christmas watch. Not to mention it's pleasing to watch a Karen get her comeuppance!

Surprisingly funny
nicolaperrin22 November 2023
I watched this movie because I expected it to be absolutely awful and I assumed I'd be laughing AT it, but I was surprisingly very impressed as I found myself laughing along multiple times. It was actually very funny and it wasn't too over-the-top funny like a lot of comedy blockbuster movies are, where I normally sit there with a straight face, or I cringe through most of it! It's a low-budget movie, but I don't think it needed to be anything else. The first spirit was my favourite. They made me laugh the most and the actress who played Karen reminded me of Melissa McCarthy, who I'm a fan of. Im actually going to watch it again before Christmas, which is surprising for me as a lot of low-budget movies are only worthy of one watch, but this is enjoyable enough to watch again!

THE KARENS ARE THE ONLY ONES LEAVING POOR REVIEWS
magdalamuse1 January 2023
This movie was incredible. I stumbled across this movie one night when I couldn't sleep, and didn't know what to expect. The main character, Karen, was depicted very well and it was funny to watch on screen. Such a modern and creative spin on a traditional Christmas movie classic. The acting was great, and the messages were heartfelt and hit deep. There were many messages in this film that could be major teaching lessons, only if the viewers are open to receive them. The only people that i'm sure rated this film poorly, are in fact Karens and/or Karen adjacent. This film showed the power of kindness and forgiveness, which is always a positive.
