One of the longest running TV programs in American TV history...
I was surprised and pleased to see this program listed on IMDb. ATW was a news program for children that started as a local show and then was distributed along the NY Public TV net, the Eastern Educational Network, and finally by a variety Public Broadcasting nets. The program aired for more than 50 years until the local PBS outlet put it to bed.
Known for its CLUES in the NEWS segment, it encouraged children to seek out answers to the news clues each week and while intended for viewing by school children in the 4th-6th grades, it followed Sesame Street on Thursday mornings so it attracted some homebound viewers as well.
For many years, the program was under the direction of WXXI-TV's Education Director, Gerry McMullen, a former school teacher who used the program in her classroom before moving to WXXI on a full-time basis. The program was produced and directed by Martha Walstrum, one of the first female P/D's in American TV.
I was the producer and anchor for the program from 1971-1978 and enjoyed every minute of my involvement with the program. It was a lowly budgeted show which meant we had to be creative with how the show was produced. The most recent newscast featured Teej Jenkins as the anchor and I was proud of her work since she was one of my TV students at Monroe Community College.
I just wanted to provided a little bit of background on the show to anyone who might want to know more.
