Gert is waiting for news whether he got the knight co-lead in the same play as his beloved Marlène. The ministerial delegate is even more eager for the 'pleasant surprise' he was promised from the ministry. When Van Leemhuizen distributes the mail, which he clumsily dropped after opening the envelopes, he and the mayor make fun of the delegate, who reads his services can be used best as street-cleaner. The mayor gets a letter awarding him knighthood, so he triumphs preparing for the lead in the play. Gert however discovers the truth after the director's arrival.
