Another Terrible Ending!
Rob133130 September 2022
The original Dexter was absolutely, without a doubt, one of the best shows ever created! It's a thrilling, one of a kind TV show that will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout the entire series. Michael C. Hall is perfect as Dexter and the rest of the supporting cast is just as fantastic! Yes, the ending was terrible but like Game of Thrones, Lost (or any other show with a bad final episode), a few bad episodes at the end doesn't spoil what an overall great show it was and that's what Dexter is...a GREAT show! The ending was so bad they brought back Dexter: New Blood to give it a better ending. Problem is the ending to this was even worse. I've loved having Dexter back on my tv and the show was really good overall, they just blew the ending for a second time. It's still definitely worth watching!

I missed Dexter so much but the ending was awful!
Supermanfan-1330 January 2023
I missed Dexter so much and was so excited to hear that it was getting revived for this series. Dexter is easily one of my favorite shows of all-time and one of the few shows I can watch all the way through several times over without getting bored. Dexter: New Blood is actually pretty good until the ending. The ending to the original was pretty bad but this ending is actually worse. I'm not one of those people who thinks a bad ending ruins the whole series for me, as long as the series was good overall then I don't downgrade the entire series because of one bad show. But if there's any exception this show is it. The ending really is that bad. I'd still recommend this to any Dexter fans just to see Michael C. Hall back as Dexter. That's worth watching alone. Just be prepared to be disappointed at the ending.

Should not have been made

Warning: Spoilers
Very heartbreaking ending, I was expecting more from the final. I liked the way things they left after season 8. This feels like a meaningless story to tell. I personally didn't need to know he get killed, I mean by his son. How messed up is that? We see how much Dexter loves Harrison in the original show, and it ends up like this. This should have been left alone. All the 7 stars for Michael C hall. He was excellent as always. I still cant believe it though, my favorite character is dead only by the hands of my least favorite character. Now I cant even re-watch the original show knowing this horrible ending. Writers can go f themselves.

Ending ruined it
S-t-a-t-i-x12 January 2022
Dexter: New Blood quickly felt like Dexter again. I was enjoying it more and more until the last 10-15 minutes of the final episode. I can't believe they did it again. They freaking did it again... Once more they ruined it with the ending.

It's a damn shame, because this had so much potential.

The last episode - why, why, why????

Warning: Spoilers
If you liked the original show, you'd like this one too. I enjoyed all the episodes except for the last one. I was very disappointed to see Dexter got killed by his son Harrison. I'd hate to watch Harrison take over the role. However, for the 9 episodes and for old times sake, I'd give it a decent rating.

Overall good, but again a terrible final...
Lukasmj5 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Dexter: New Blood" was a sequel that I was really looking forward to.

"Finally we get the ending worthy of the series," I thought.

I'll come back to that later in this review.

As I learned in school, I would first like to mention the aspects that I liked about the sequel.

As in "Dexter", Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan) delivers a very good performance, which was to be expected.

But actors like Jack Alcott (Harrison Morgan), Clancy Brown (Kurt Caldwell), or Johnny Sequoyah (Audrey) also play their roles extremely well.

I also think the setting is well chosen.

Seeing Dexter in a whole new environment was refreshing after seeing him only in Miami for 8 seasons.

I also think the story and characters are well written and well thought out.

Now we come to the negative part of my review.

One point of criticism I have is that the series is a bit unrealistic here and there.

By that I mean specifically that Angela involves Dexter too much in her work.

Sure, she loves him and probably doesn't think anything about it, but the rest of the time she seems to me like a woman who takes her job very seriously.

I now come to my final and biggest criticism of the series. The end.

The ending was in my opinion, just awful and very disappointing.

Sure, the fans are finally getting an end here, but just not an edning that does Dexter justice.

Killing Dexter that way in the end was generally a stupid decision, but the way he died is even sillier when you consider that for the entirety of the previous 9 episodes, Dexter has been trying to be a good father to Harrison.

In the end, however, Dexter lets himself be shot by his own son, who is already traumatized by the murder of his mother, is mentally extremely stressed and has even developed a "dark passenger" (!) like his father.

How does that make sense?

Now the boy has lost both his parents and even killed his father himself. So if you ask me, it's very counterproductive to the trauma he already has and inevitably leads to Harrison going down the same path as Dexter, especially since Dexter has already shown him how to silence his "dark passenger".

I will now describe the ending in bullet points that I would have wished for and which, in my opinion, would have been much better.

  • Dexter is revealed to be the "Bay Harbor Butcher".

  • Dexter struggles with this, but accepts that accepting his punishment is the right way to go

  • Dexter speaks with Harrison for the last time, telling him that the path he has taken is not the right one to deal with his problems and asking Harrison to seek help and not follow in his footsteps.

  • Dexter is taken to Miami to atone for his actions, where he meets Batista one last time and also apologizes to him sincerely

  • Dexter is now in court where he is confronted with his actions and he tells his life story in court and explains his psychological problems, from which his motive emerges

  • Dexter is sentenced to death

  • The final scene is Dexter sitting in the electronic chair, saying his last words and then being executed.

Final episode reset needed!
tuanskie19 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I had never watched Dexter until I binged through this particular series. I gave the series an overall rating of 8 because it hooked me into going backwards in watching Dexter from the very beginning. All I can say is that the final episode of this limited run series is disappointing to say the least and deserves a 1/10. I echo what others have already stated - what's the point? Please ShowTime, do a reshoot of the episode and magically wipe out the hideous storyline and treatment Dexter received. A large number of us will be glad to pretend "it" never happened! Heck, it'll be awesome if the son never happened!

Some of you are missing the point
daniel_pank_nielsen21 November 2021
I really enjoyed the first two episodes. I liked how Dexter's missing inner dialogue, that is very essential to the character, provides the necessary insights into how he has managed to suppress his dark passenger for so many years. Dexter was always good at creating a fake persona that to other people appeared like a "regular" person, so it makes perfect sense that he has managed to blend in so easily. I have read several reviews saying that they hate Debra being Dexter's new guide and that every scene with her is uncomfortable, to me that's kinda the point. She symbolizes everything bad that has happened because of Dexter's darkness. "Harry" as a guide functioned as a reminder of the rules he was taught, he got Dexter to only kill bad people, but that's not the role "Debra" is intended to fill. You are supposed to find her presence unbearable because that's how Dexter feels too.

Overall I think it will be a great season, the writing is good and the actors, especially Michael C. Hall, are excellent.

Its Dexter, but with snow.
johnsen-kasper25 November 2021
I've read a bunch of the negative review, and let me start by saying: I'm not sure what more they want?

This is Dexter as it used to be. Its quirky, dark and not very realistic. But you could apply that to the entire series, and if you do - Dexter isn't for you. But if you loved Dexter, you're going to love this just as much, is is everything we ever wanted - cant wait to see more!

Spectacular reboot to one of my favorite shows
UniqueParticle8 November 2021
So much charm same as original series, I love everything they've done with it so far and blessed to see more of Micheal C. Hall! The Dark Passenger still flows ever so smooth through a new area with his rules intact. One of the best soundtracks ever that makes me so happy enticed for more to come; hell yes Dexter Morgan!

Nice build up, horrible ending
seattlebruin9 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first 9 episodes were solid. I genuinely anticipated the ending Clyde Phillips promised. It was supposed to "blow up the internet" and was the "best thing I ever wrote"

I have no problem with what happened in the end. It was more about how they did it. First and foremost, Dexter never panics. Never. He told Harrison he had gotten out of worse situations and he had many times and now based on almost zero evidence they'd never be able to do anything with Dexter panicked and killed Logan. Moreover, the expert in anatomy and killing couldn't manage to just have him pass out.

I knew he was gonna die or at least strongly suspected it, but as I said it was about the how. After he panics he then says he understands love for the first time and he shows it by allowing his son to murder him.

It was rushed and poorly executed. Clyde Phillips hype was absurd. They would have spent an entire episode on the interrogation. The few minutes they did was riveting. Dexter would have found a way out and then they could have killed him however they wanted after he was released. I was so irritated by this total departure in the essence of the character in the killing of Logan that I just rolled my eyes at the ending.

It wasn't a bad season. I thought episode 9 was well done. It set the stage for the big disappointment once again not because he died, but the way they did it. In my mind he is still a lumberjack roaming the Pacific Northwest.

The Dark Passenger is back!!
cscott23317 November 2021
Great start. I'm going to forgive and forget how the previous series ended and start anew. I refuse to let the final episode take away the awesomeness that was Dexter. I was excited they jumped right in. I'm sure we'll get lots more backstory on the way, but all I needed to know was Dexter Morgan was still in there...and he is! Even the musical score was spot on! Can't wait to see what dark Journey we're taken on this season. Bring it on Dexter!! I'm ready!

All of these flavors, and you ended with Garbage.
hawke20319 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Good start. Excellent middle. Disjointed rubbish ending. At the end of episode 9 I would've said "this is how you revive a television IP", but with episode 10 out, that sentiment is severely shattered. Almost to the point where I think that Dexter(the IP) should have stayed ended without this renewal.

It's worth watching, but if you're the kind of person that gets really into the characters you're watching, you might want to give this a miss, because narratively the ending is garbage and will leave you with enough of a bad taste in your mouth you will probably wish you didn't watch it.

This is bad all the way through... (spoilers)
sihtricx-280399 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ever seems to think the ending ruined this season, but honestly there was nothing to ruin. It's bad, predictable and cliche from episode 1. The reasons and writing used to get Dexter from being the slightly new but loved guy in town are seriously ridiculous. His GF finding out his real identity because of Harrison's first name literally made me gag. This is the kind of weak reasoning and plot used in actual soap operas. The podcaster chick was gross. The kind of character 45 year old dudes write and think they did good representing someone from a younger generation.... At the very least, I will say that this season was more bearable than the last two season of the original show. It was dragged out so much due to popularity that it turned into a joke. You know ppl keep saying things like 'oh I wish they would remake this show or that movie, or pick up an old but good cancelled series' haven't we learned by now? When did such a situation ever turn out well??

Michael C. Hall deserves more appreciation
gedikreverdi15 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Michael C. Hall is such a good actor. We need to appreciate him more. Nothing much happened but there's an atmosphere of foreboding and uneasiness and that reminds me very much of good old times when I got to watch Dexter without knowing I was watching one of the best shows in my life.

Dexter Saga Continues
myronlearn8 November 2021
I was big 'Dexter' fan and when the series ended some 8 years ago, I thought it concluded well. When I read they were doing a 'Dexter' sequel, I was very dubious, believing that it would be better just to leave well enough alone. Sequels generally are disappointing.

Having watched the first episode of 'Dexter:New Blood', I have to admit that they pulled it off beautifully. Though the venue is different, it was like seeing old friends again. (so glad Debra is back as Dexter's conscience, advisor, etc). I'm happy to report that 'Dexter' is officially back up and running like a fine tuned machine. Welcome back!

Reboots are always messy; not this one
arnab_9117 November 2021
I was disappointed that they let Dexter live after hurricane Laura. Disappointment turned into pleasure with the finesse the reboot kicked off. Dexter's breaking point, the urges, the onion like layers of his new life merging with his old life was actually pretty dope. Harry, Dexter's father moulded him creatively, it's to be seen what Dexter does with that gift!

It was good, but yeah, the finale was baloney.
mck-2073911 June 2022
It was good, it was Dexter good, but I have to agree with other reviewers: the finale is really bad. I had read reviews before watching the series and I couldn't believe the finale would really be that bad. The story could have gone in any direction, but it seems it went in the worst possible one. The finale just doesn't make sense, it doesn't add up; it's not only unrealistic, but it also doesn't seem to be justified even in the realms of an isolated piece of fiction. Everything was really good, but the finale was just bad writing.

Building Up
Tactrix21 November 2021
Slow start but the feel is pretty similar to the original. I really can't stand Deb in this one, harry was at least helpful, all Deb seems to do in this one is scream and yell at Dexter. The other thing that bothered me with both the original series and this one is fact that Dexter is always looking for ways to get rid of bodies. For anyone else that might be a thing, but he's literally a forensics expert, he spent most of his life in science, if anyone should know how to melt a body to nothing it should be him.

Update: After watching the whole "first season", I'm confused as why they started a new series instead of just calling it season 9. It seems like they literally did this just to wrap up the original series ending, and it really doesn't look very likely that they'll even have a season 2 so...?

Good Reboot!
djberman-5968530 November 2021
While the new show does not quite measure up to the writing of seasons one or two, I think that New Blood has so far been very good and entertaining. I really enjoy the plot line and I was not expecting to enjoy the dynamic between grown Harrison's and Dexter as much as I have. While it is very entertaining to watch, I do very much prefer when Harry acted as Dexter's "conscience" versus it being Deb now. Despite this and a couple of corny moments, I look forward to watching the new episode every week.

Pretty good apart from the end
Rob-O-Cop18 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There was a lot they got right with this series.

Dexter was as good as he's ever been.

The tension and humor was there.

I really liked some of the side characters, especially Angela and her daughter.

Kurt struck an interesting tone, a well known member of the community operating in plain sight. I thought he started off as some petrochemical billionaire or something but he morphed into the truckstop owner and Samaritan, but not.

Harrison was ok, and did deliver some decent character traits, his ability to tell Dexter what his was going to do and not take orders etc. He didn't really sell his Dark Passenger side well though.

Angela started off well as the hot wild and capable sheriff. She did seem way to quick to turn on Dexter though, they could have fixed that with a bit of back story about how she responds badly to people who lie cos someone lied in her past and really messed her up.

Mostly it was interesting and watchable, but the end didn't work. They just didn't sell it well. It felt rushed and tacked on and didn't make a dot of sense, and it could have worked. All they needed to do was talk about it a bit more and hammer home the logic of it. Why it was the only way forward. As it stands it totally wasn't. It achieved nothing. Harrison didn't get to stay and have a life in the town which would have been one good reason, he's a lone, he's going to be pulled in and tied into it all, it really wasn't a win.

Dexter's death was lame too. Like they did one take of it and said, it'll do, move one.

I didn't buy it and it looks like no one else did, and it's a shame as the rest of the series definitely had it's moments.

Dexter's son and Angela's daughter getting it on was funny and weird, the town was interesting and the setting was well chosen. This shouldn't have been the end.

Worst ending ever!
maxmillerssj419 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Dexter Morgan was a legend and a Genius. It seemed someone else in the ending. He wouldn't be that stupid and killing a good officer. And Also, there were not suficient proof against him to he be arrested before killing the officer. It seemed a diferent character in the last episode. The actor also didn't deserve this end after played so sucessfully Dexter Morgan.

The Last Episode Ruined It
lottolusso7 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The last episode ruined it.

New Blood until episode 9 wasn't perfect; had plot pole here and there but anyway, with a good finale could have deserved maybe an 8. Top bad the last episode is really, really bad: way worse than Season 8 finale.
