Director Eddie White is best known for writing and co-directing 2009.s The Cat Piano, an eight-and-a-half-minute marvel narrated by Nick Cave and shortlisted for best animated short at the Oscars alongside films by Pixar and Aardman.
White and co-director Ari Gibson made the short at The People.s Republic of Animation, the company White founded with high-school friends in Adelaide while studying acting at Flinders University.
The shingle was eventually bought by video game developer Halfbrick Studios (creators of Fruit Ninja), but White had already moved on, in 2012, as the company began to specialise in video games and apps..
.I chose to go freelance, because I just wanted to make films at that stage, and I could see that wasn.t the business model for them,. he said.
White spent a couple of years developing an animated feature with Gibson which never got off the ground, as well as churning out short animations on commission.

While the controversial, unnecessary Hollywood remake of Akira is making headlines with more terrible casting rumours, today we have a video that shows there are still artists and filmmakers out there that know how to pay respect to Akira while creating something new and interesting. A couple months ago we posted a music video created by one half of the directing team behind Oscar shortlisted animation The Cat Piano, and today we have another music video from the other half. The musician in question is the same one, Gotye, who is arguably keeping the indie animation industry in Australia alive by employing animators to not only make most of his official music videos, but to produce video clips for his live shows. Co-directed by Eddie White and Benjamin Drake -- who also...

One of the greatest short films of 2009 was The Cat Piano, narrated by Nick Cave, which was shortlisted for an Academy Award. Written and directed by Ari Gibson and Eddie White, The Cat Piano did the viral rounds on the interwebs, fuelled by festival wins and great word of mouth. One of the people clearly wowed by it was Wally De Backer, a musician from Australia who trades under the name Gotye. For his previous music videos Gotye had collaborated with a range of animators, from Brendan Cook on 'Hearts A Mess', to Shannon Cross on 'Learnalilgivinanlovin', not to mention his longtime visual colloborator Jake Simkin. With a new album coinciding with headline Sydney Opera House gigs at the Graphic Festival this weekend, we can see that...

It was only five years ago when the Australian Film Institute Awards reached their most sad and pathetic moment. 2005, the year that will live in infamy for followers of Australian film, produced only one (One!) film that the AFI felt worthy enough to award. Cate Shortland's Somersault was nominated for and won every.single.category. The really sad thing is that it probably deserved to win them all, which says more about the slate of Aussie films that year than anything else.
Sidebar: Two of Somersault's wins were for Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington's performances. The former is on the cusp of Oscar and the latter on the cusp of global fame and worship. You could do worse than seeing where these two learnt the ropes.
This year's AFI awards, however, are a much different story. 2009 has been a stellar year for Australian cinema - perhaps the...

The Cat Piano ain't bein' cute at the keyboard. The Cat Piano is the freewheelin' real deal. Created by the award-winning animation studio The People's Republic of Animation, this jazzy short film is told from the perspective of a cat beat poet, who narrates his moody dark tale of falling in love with a singer. It's expressive and fluid, with touches of film noir and narration by none other than Nick Cave.

The YouTube piano cat meme is more than two years old. In other words, it's long overdue for a parody of its own. And the folks at the People's Republic of Animation are only to happy to give you something you probably never would have thought to ask for: an animated film-noir take on the piano cat, The Cat Piano, narrated by Aussie rocker/general badass, Nick Cave.
